Utility work continues on State Route 28 and paving on State Route 89

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Highways 28 and 89 in north Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue to work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach. In addition, pavement repairs are scheduled on various sections of Highway 89.

Lake Tahoe Community College celebration with State of the College Address

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Community leaders, faculty, staff, and students filled the Duke Theatre at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) on Thursday for the annual State of the College Address.

The theme for the day was "Gratitude" and the college's Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco walked everyone through a few challenging years that included COVID, the Caldor Fire and evacuation, and a winter that provided endless snowstorms over and over again.

Suicide Awareness Month: To date, 20 suicides in El Dorado County in 2023

He became the twentieth person to die by suicide in El Dorado County this year. With four months left in the year, it is possible we could see more than the 22 suicide deaths in the county in 2022.

South Tahoe High Vikings Homecoming Parade

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School is holding its annual Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 6 starting at 4:30 p.m.

The parade floats and vehicles will start at the school bus garage on Al Tahoe Blvd., then proceed west on US50/Lake Tahoe Blvd. to the high school campus.

The public can watch the parade from anywhere along the parade route.

After the parade, there will be two home football games - the JV football game starts at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m. Both games are against Sparks High.

Summer STEM camp in South Lake Tahoe: Local youth build boats from scratch with help from MIT

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe STEM Academy and the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) offered a wooden boat-building summer STEM camp for 5th-8th graders in August. As part of this camp, Tahoe STEM Academy partnered with the Edgerton Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and hosted MIT instructors, undergraduate students, and alumni to act as mentors and instructors for the members of BGCLT participating in the camp.

Free vaccination and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe

Larry J. Reid ~ June 23 1934 - August 8 2023

Larry Reid was a member of the American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe. Born in Mason City, Iowa, Larry and his family moved to Oakland, Calif. in 1939 and then to Richmond, Calif. in 1942. Larry graduated from Richmond Union High in 1952. That same year he joined the US Army and was sent to Seoul, Korea where he served until 1956, later joining the Air Force In 1958.

Larry married his wife, Donna, in 1960. He left the Air Force with Donna in May 1962 and moved back to the Bay Area.

Alpine County Fire near Wolf Creek Campground burns 35 acres, about 20% contained

THURSDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Wolf Creek Fire resources did great work on the incident today and containment is up to 50 percent. Tonight, crews will be solidifying fire breaks. Acres burned have been updated at 32.6 due to more accurate mapping.

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Crews from the U.S. Forest Service - Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and other agencies are working on a fire burning near the Wolf Creek Campground, south of Markleville. As of dusk on Wednesday, September 13 the fire had burned about 35 acres and is 20-25 percent contained.

Forest Service rescinds enhanced fire restrictions - affects Watson, Blackwood and Luther Pass

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has rescinded the enhanced fire restrictions on National Forest Lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Wood and charcoal fires are once again allowed in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass and Watson Lake undeveloped campgrounds with valid permits.

Year-round restrictions remain in effect and Wood and charcoal fires are only allowed elsewhere in hosted campgrounds. Fire restrictions still in place in South Lake Tahoe and other local fire jurisdictions.

Douglas County School suspends bylaws against pleas of teachers and parents

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In a marathon meeting that went to the legally mandated end time of 11:59 p.m., the Douglas County School Board trustees on Tuesday voted to suspend a series of bylaws that covered everything from superintendent duties to public comment, communication, and agendas.

The trustees made it through less than half of its 34-item agenda during the eight-hour meeting, and as has been the norm in 2023, it was a contentious meeting with a majority of the public speaking during the meeting clearly on the other side of the board.

El Dorado County sends letter to ACLU about their reconsideration of American Christian Heritage Month

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) has sent a letter to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), informing them of plans to bring the American Christian Heritage Month proclamation back to their next agenda for a new vote.

"It's the right thing to do," said Supervisor Brooke Laine. While the vote on the proclamation won't be known to that meeting, it is expected to be rescinded.

What a Life: Jeff Kaufer 5/26/51 - 8/11/23

Jeffrey Jay Kaufer was born May 26, 1951. Jeff passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a year and a half battle with cancer.  He was born in Detroit, MI and his family relocated to Southern California when he was 5 years old. He and his brothers bounced between Thousand Oaks and Hollywood. A highlight from his childhood was getting Sandy Koufax to give him and his two brothers, a ride home after a game.

TASK not only works on reducing access to drugs and alcohol by youth and kids in the community but also brings and supports programs in the schools that teach healthy decision-making, positive communication skills, ways to address stress and anxiety, and other life skills that support thriving youth. TASK will be launching a new theme each month to educate the community.

Expect afternoon highs this week to warm into the mid and upper 80s across western Nevada with mid to upper 70s for Sierra communities, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Hans Bonnickson ~ October 23, 1980 - February 2023

It is with great sorrow that on Monday, September 11th, we will be saying goodbye to our dear friend and brother, Hans Bonnicksen. He was a beloved brother, uncle, son, and friend. His heart was so kind and he was always there for anyone in need. It is unfortunate that the people so quick to lend a hand are often the ones who feel ashamed to ask for help in return.

Hans is survived by his sister, Ember, brother-in-law, Aaron, his niece, Ella, and father, William.

Annual 9/11 flag replacement ceremony on US50

For 23 years, Christopher "Chris" Sneed has climbed up a rock outcropping off of US50 above Carson City, Nevada to plant a flag in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. He changes the flag annually on the 10th so there is a new flag to start off 9/11 with, giving the day a new beginning with the new flag.

This year, a crowd once again gathered along the highway to watch Chris climb the rock and change the flag. Granite Construction donated their time to provide traffic control and closed down the lane next to the rock to keep the area safe for attendees.

Lake Tahoe bear activity ramps up, increasing number of bears vs. vehicles draws concern

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two cubs who were hit by a vehicle in South Lake Tahoe about three weeks ago are on the mend, but their condition is concerning to many who have seen them. They were hit on Pioneer Trail, and the Bear League and others who responded have kept an eye on the two to make sure they are continuing to move around and able to get food.

Local urbanized black bear expert Toogee Sielsch said it's hard to see the bears moving around with obvious injuries, but as long as they can keep up with the momma bear they have a good chance of survival.

Alpine One crowned champions of 2023 LTCC Adult Coed League

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Alpine Carpet One defeated Guadalajara last month and was crowned champion of the 2023 LTCC Adult Coed League.

In its third year of existence, the league had 12 teams and more than 250 players in what is the LTCC soccer program’s biggest fundraiser.

The league's season ran from May to July, with playoffs in August. Teams are coed fo those 18 and over,with nine players and a minimum of four women on the field at all times.
