Collected sales tax in South Lake Tahoe up double-digits over last year
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/29/2021 - 7:04pmThe economy recovered nicely after the pandemic according to the quarterly sales tax report released Sunday. South Lake Tahoe’s sales tax receipts from April through June (Quarter 2/Q2) were 10.5 percent above the same period in 2020. Adjustments for delayed payments, audits, and other reporting modifications resulted in actual sales that were up 51.3 percent. Overall place of sale collections soared 82.5 percent compared to the extreme lows of a year ago.

El Dorado Hills - 3540 cases - +20 - The 14-day new case rate is 66 with 155 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 827 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 13 with 138 per 100,000 residents.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Christmas Engine schedule

Starting on December 10, the engine will start its nightly route from Station 1 each night at 5:00 p.m. and cruise through the designated neighborhoods listed below, handing out candy canes for everyone.
State law enforcement agency changes NHP name to Nevada State Police

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (CPS) has now changed its official designation for the Nevada Highway Patrol and other state law enforcement departments to Nevada State Police.
The name change affects law enforcement divisions of the Highway Patrol, Parole and Probation, Capitol Police, Investigations, and the State Fire Marshal. The announcement was made last week.
Soroptimist Club of South Lake Tahoe holding Giving Tuesday fundraiser instead of annual wine tasting
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/28/2021 - 8:06pmSoroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) normally holds its annual Evening of Food & Wine Tasting each November, but due to COVID-19 concerns, it was canceled for 2021. This year was going to be a special one too, the 50th annual event.
This is normally SISLT’s biggest fundraiser, and without it, the non-profit organization is unable to raise the necessary funds to support causes throughout the community.
SISLT was established in 1958 and strives to be a powerful source to recognize and serve the greatest needs in our community. Some of the club's accomplishments:

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra history series with two campfire programs this coming weekend, December 4 and 5.
On Saturday, December 4, it will be a living history/Chautauqua style presentation by local historian David Woodruff on Sierra Nevada legend Snowshoe Thompson. It will be held Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 p.m. The 50-minute campfire program is free and open to the public.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - On November 27, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was serving a search warrant in the area of Walker Street in Gardnerville to Jessie Avalos. They were attempting to locate him in reference to a domestic dispute, assault with a deadly weapon, and coercion investigation.

Mobile boat decontamination unit from Lake Tahoe donated to fight invasive species at Lake Sonoma
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/27/2021 - 6:06pmLake Tahoe, NV/CA – Lake Tahoe aquatic invasive species (AIS) watercraft inspection agencies recently donated a mobile boat decontamination unit to a nearby program at Lake Sonoma to help stop the spread of invasive species.
The donated equipment allows inspectors to apply 140-degree water to boats, trailers, engines, and storage areas to kill any living invasive plant or animal without harming equipment. The Tahoe program no longer needed the mobile unit as they now have permanent equipment at several inspection stations.

Don't need a new furry family member? They are also accepting donations, and all donations made on Tuesday, November 30 will be matched up to $100,000.
There are sixteen puppies and kittens that are up for adoption, and all adoptions will take place online.
Starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, people interested must complete a questionnaire. They will not be accepted prior to that time.

Traditionally, these sales would pop up for the day or weekend before; however this year, online holiday sales started as early as Halloween and will continue throughout the holiday season.
Better Business Bureau (BBB) reports that online shopping scams are routinely the largest culprit of holiday complaints, with many who find themselves receiving counterfeit items, low-quality items, no items at all—and worse, having their identity stolen in the process.
Sierra Business Council asks for support to change proposed redistricting boundaries

The Sierra Business Council (SBC) said they normally do not weigh in on individual legislative representation, but said they do believe that the composition of legislative districts is an important foundation that determines how the region will be represented in the future.
California collects $322.34 million in cannabis taxes for 3rd quarter
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/26/2021 - 9:43amThe third quarter report on reported cannabis tax revenue in California was released this week, As of November 16, 2021, the total returns showed $322.34 million in taxes collected, according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).
This includes California’s cannabis excise tax, which generated $168.97 million; the cultivation tax, which generated $42.41 million; and $110.96 million in sales tax revenue from cannabis businesses.

The TOCCATA–Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will conclude their 16th season with a production of HANDEL’S MESSIAH, along with seasonal carols that the audience will be most welcome to join in singing.
Vocal soloists for these performances will include soloists from their chorus and other area musicians.

It was easy to say "thank you" to law enforcement for patrolling our streets and protecting our town after we all evacuated as the fire quickly headed to Lake Tahoe. It was easy to say "thank you" to all of the utilities and agencies and their staff for staying in town to keep things working. It is also easy to say "Happy Thanksgiving" as we celebrate the one day each year set aside to celebrate friends and family and give thanks for what we are blessed with.

Man wanted on multiple sex crime charges in Arizona arrested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/24/2021 - 6:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Members of the U.S. Marshals Office traced an Arizona man to South Lake Tahoe after he left the state prior to a court appearance on over 40 counts of sex crimes.
Gordon Golding, 56, was arrested by the marshals with assistance from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at a home on Margaret Street on November 19. He is currently in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe on a felony fugitive from justice warrant, awaiting extradition to Arizona.

Man who escaped jail in South Lake Tahoe still on the loose
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/24/2021 - 11:33amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An inmate in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe escaped Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. while doing supervised inmate duties outside of the jail.
Ruben Zavala Garcia, 38, was in custody for multiple criminal charges to include domestic violence, violation of restraining order, false imprisonment, burglary, and a violation of probation. He had been arrested on July 4, 2021, and was still in custody awaiting his next court appearance next week. He had not been convicted or sentenced for his charges.

$500,000 in community donations for Tahoe Magic

Thank you to all who have donated to Tahoe Magic over the past 20 months.
With these donations, Tahoe Magic has assisted local families who are/were in crisis monthly since the pandemic started. Over the past three months, they have been above to give out $55,000 because of the added trauma of the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe hosting public vaccination clinic for 5-12 year olds
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/22/2021 - 11:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe and Barton Hospital, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) will be hosting a vaccination clinic for children aged 5 to 12 years in the afternoon of Tuesday, November 23.
Two hundred doses are available and interested parents can sign up at https://myturn.ca.gov/. Follow the prompts to be shown available clinics with appointments.
McClintock calls for Biden to reverse FEMA's decision to not assist individual Caldor Fire victims

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has denied Governor Newsom’s appeal for Individual Assistance for victims of the Caldor Fire. The Caldor Fire is the 15th largest and 16th most destructive fire in the history of California. Nearly 800 homes were destroyed when the fire tragically wiped out the Gold Rush-era town of Grizzly Flats.

A weak cold front moves through Tuesday bringing breezy northwest winds, cloudy skies, and low-end chances for light rain/snow showers mostly over the far northern Sierra. High-pressure returns for the remainder of next week with dry conditions and seasonable temperatures prevailing, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Local Girl Scouts learn to rock climb in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/21/2021 - 5:24pmNearly 40 local Girl Scouts from the Tahoe Shores service unit and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada attended a recent Rock Climbing Day hosted by Troop 722 at Blue Granite Climbing Gym. Girls were taught about the equipment and skills by the gym’s experienced climbing staff. Many earned their Climbing Adventure Badge or worked on some of the skills required to complete the badge for their level in Girl Scouts.
