ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - A Reno man died Friday after falling approximately 75-feet in Woodfords Canyon, Alpine County south of Lake Tahoe.

On Friday, May 20, 2022, the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of the climbing accident. The climber, 43-year-old James Allen Brown, had succumbed to the injuries sustained in the fall.

"On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and Alpine County, we extend our deepest condolences to the family," said JT Chevallier, the county's public information officer.

No other persons were injured in the incident.

Fill a bag with as many books as possible and get the whole thing for just $5.00! Most individual books are .25 cents apiece, with some specially marked books available for $1.00. Payment is on the honor system, and we request that you bring correct change.

The growing number of statewide judicial officers endorsing Gary Slossberg’s campaign for El Dorado County Superior Court Judge has reached forty. Among the judicial officers recently joining the list are Chief Judge Victorio L. Shaw of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Tribal Court and Superior Court Commissioner (Ret.) William Neil Shepherd. They join every current El Dorado County Superior Court Judge and every retired El Dorado County Superior Court Judge that has endorsed a candidate in supporting Slossberg.

The Friends of Squaw Valley is hosting an Olympic Valley Town Meeting on Saturday, May 28, and it should be a great opportunity to get updated on current projects and future planning for North Tahoe.

Featured speakers include representatives from Placer County, Alterra Mountain Company, and local water districts.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A case currently making its way through El Dorado County Superior Court in South Lake Tahoe is an unusual one, and has been since July 7, 1985, when newspaper columnist Jane Hylton was found dead in an El Dorado Hills home with 29 stab wounds and a bite mark on her shoulder.

For 27 years, Valhalla Tahoe has hosted an annual Holiday Faire at the Heller Estate for the enjoyment of the community. Valhalla Tahoe and our volunteers celebrate the season by decking the Grand Hall for everyone's enjoyment. A favorite tradition for many local families, you can get a glimpse of Tahoe's past while shopping for hand-made crafts, taking free photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and enjoying local entertainment and holiday libations. Tahoe's Children's Choirs line the balcony to sing holiday songs throughout the day.

Tahoe Vista, CA. – The Sierra State Parks Foundation has unveiled four new interpretative panels that tell the story of Mark Twain’s 1861 timber claim adventure and wildfire. These new panels are located at Gar Woods Grill and Pier in Carnelian Bay, Sandy Beach in Tahoe Vista, and North Tahoe Beach in Kings Beach. On May 20, 2022, there was a private dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting to celebrate this big achievement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A warming trend will ensue, with hot temperatures possible Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Northerly breezes are expected through Tuesday before westerly afternoon breezes make a comeback Wednesday. The next weather system will approach the Pacific Northwest Thursday, leading to gusty winds, cooler temperatures, and a few showers and thunderstorms toward the end of the week.

There is a chance South Lake Tahoe could see 80 on Thursday. This should not be a record (which was 83 on that date) but it is above normal.

D’DAT (Delbert Anderson and the Delbert Anderson Trio) is a multicultural ensemble fusing Diné melodies of the Southwest, jazz, funk and hip-hop and they will be at the Valhalla Boathouse Theater on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. James Pakootas motivates with stories overcoming difficult paths and is supported by trumpet artist Delbert Anderson, national touring artist Nicholas Lucero and groove bassist Mike McCluhan. D’DAT combines all characters and genres to give audiences an exciting multi-cultured performance.

How vast is the universe? How far away are the stars? “Silent Sky” tells the true story of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow female researchers or “computers” in the Harvard University observatory who set the standard still used today for measuring distances in space while discovering thousands of stars. Twenty years before women’s suffrage, the “computers” pursue their passion for astronomy in a society that limits women’s roles while credit for their discoveries are dismissed or claimed by male astronomers.

This week, volunteer educators from the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) engaged third and fourth graders from four different elementary schools in place-based environmental education. Students were brought to the Tallac Historic site and led around various stations across the site, participating in lessons on local history, watersheds, fire resilience, and trees while interacting with their environment at each station.

I have listened to two Board of Supervisor District 5 candidate forums. Each of the candidates was given tough questions to answer. But hands down, Brooke Laine is the one - who gave the most thoughtful & coherent answers – who had the best understanding of the District 5 issues – who had the best handle on how the county government & independent agencies work. With her years of experience working respectfully with others to solve problems, Brooke is the one candidate best suited to working with the other El Dorado County supervisors to find real solutions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cody Bass was arraigned on May 20 in El Dorado County Superior Court on misdemeanor charges stemming from his arrest on September 25, 2021. Bass, a South Lake Tahoe city councilman, was driving his Tesla back into the Tahoe Basin when the California Highway Patrol (CHP) saw his car parked near Twin Bridges at 2:30 a.m. with Bass asleep behind the wheel.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District has a digital learning academy for students where day-to-day in-person instruction isn't always a good fit. Elevated Digital Learning Academy is holding a virtual information session via Zoom on Wednesday, June 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
