Council votes to sell two parcels that would have been used in relocation of US-50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two lots owned by the South Tahoe Redevelopment Successor Agency will go on the market for affordable housing after City Council voted 3-1 to sell 3900 and 3908 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Mayor Devin Middlebrook was the lone dissent and Councilmember Cristi Creegan was absent.
During its meeting this week, the council moved to get rid of the two lots that would have been used to realign US-50 through the residential Rocky Point neighborhood, commonly known as the Loop Road. They are a total of 1.16 acres and the estimated value is $1,000,000.
Lane reductions on Mt. Rose Highway for NDOT’s Incline Village highway improvements

Drivers will see lane closures and travel delays on upper Mt. Rose Highway (SR-431) through next Friday, May 27 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues enhancements to State Routes 431 and 28 near Incline Village.
· Lane closures with up to 30-minute travel delays are currently in place through May 27 on upper Mt. Rose Highway from the Summit (near Mt. Rose trailhead) through the Tahoe Meadows area for repaving. The lane closures take place, 24-hours-a-day Sundays at 8 pm through noon Fridays.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) is hosting the 10th Annual Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19. The weekend-long event features three key events. For riders, the Corral Trail Bike Demo on Saturday and registered Rides (Tahoe Triple Crown and the Power Loop) Sunday morning are registration-required events. On Sunday at 1:00 p.m. everyone is invited to a free, family-friendly Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival at Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers.
CAL FIRE suspends burn permits in region, including El Dorado, Eastern Sacramento, and North-Eastern San Joaquin counties

With the increasing fire danger due to continued drought and hotter, drier conditions in the region, CAL FIRE will be suspending burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Areas of Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin Counties. This suspension takes effect at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23rd, 2022, and bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris such as branches and leaves.
Vail promotes Tom Fortune to COO of Lake Tahoe resorts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tom Fortune has been promoted to the chief operating officer for Vail Resorts for the Tahoe Region. He will continue to be the vice president/general manager at Heavenly Mountain Resort and the new position will give him oversight at the other two resorts as well - Kirkwood and Northstar.
Fortune is a South Lake Tahoe resident and has been with Vail for 13 years.
"I love being in this community and am extremely passionate about what makes it so special," said Fortune.
Two-alarm fire under a South Lake Tahoe restaurant on Timber Cove Pier quickly extinguished

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Firefighters from several agencies responded to a fire on the Timber Cove pier Thursday, quickly putting out the flames seen underneath the Boathouse restaurant.
The two-alarm fire came in at approximately 11:15 a.m. South Lake Tahoe Police Department was first to arrive and they evacuated the Timber Cove Marina and the restaurant. All on-duty firefighters and chiefs from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded along with assistance from Lake Valley Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire.
The fire was put out right away and there were no injuries reported.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just seven years, the Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has spread out $537,018 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits, with the latest group receiving checks at a celebration Tuesday
TWCF is a collective giving organization created in 2015 in South Lake Tahoe when Wendy David and Kathy Haven sat down to create a group for the community and made up of the community. Today there are 208 members and a board of directors.
STPUD adopts new construction and remodel water and sewer capacity fees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Tahoe Public Utility District adopted new water and sewer capacity charges that go into effect June 7, 2022. These are one-time charges for new development and remodels connecting to the District’s water and sewer system.
Sewer Capacity Charge
The residential sewer capacity charge used to be based on the number of sewer units, which is a combination of the number of kitchens, toilets, and bedrooms. It will now be based on square footage.

CodeFu summer enrichment camps in South Lake Tahoe this summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Looking for summer camps for the kids this year? CodeFu Lake Tahoe is holding coding and exploration camps based at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center in June, July, and August.
Families local to the Lake Tahoe Basin, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Carson City, Minden, and Gardnerville will have first priority. Families visiting Lake Tahoe can plan ahead. Drop-in days are available.
The camp will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Half-day camps are $249 a week, and full-day is $389 a week. Drop-in rates are $89 per day.

Caltrans project on SR28 in Tahoe City and Kings Beach this week could cause delays

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - Motorists should expect delays on State Route 28 in Tahoe City and Kings Beach this week for pavement repairs to the highway.
Caltrans and its contractor, Martin Brothers Construction of Sacramento, will be performing grinding and paving work. Crews are scheduled to start setting up lane closures at 4 p.m. with repairs occurring from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19 under one-way traffic control. Motorists may experience delays of up to 20 minutes.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 43-year-old Minden resident died last week after a single-vehicle rollover crash on US-395 in the area of Douglas County Mile Marker 7 in Gardnerville.
Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to reports of the crash at approximately 2:31 a.m. on May 8, 2022.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a blue 2001 Ford Explorer SUV was traveling north on US-395 near Douglas County Mile Marker 7 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed over the centerline and left the roadway

Trap-Tag-Haze efforts underway to identify Lake Tahoe's black bears

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has begun its annual Trap-Tag-Haze efforts in South Lake Tahoe. They made the announcement this week in South Lake Tahoe, drawing concern from those thinking the traps put up near the Tahoe Keys neighborhood will cause harm to the bears, and separate cubs from their lactating mothers.
Since 2017, CDFW has caught, tagged, collected DNA, and released 36 bears as part of its Trap-Tag-Haze bear research and management efforts in the Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unseasonable warmth for Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin continues (finally) into mid-week with Sunday being the warmest day. The heat will pop some afternoon cumulus build ups and may fire off isolated showers or even a clap of thunder (10-15% chance) south of US-50. We will continue to see above-average temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure builds briefly over our region once again, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Total lunar eclipse visible from Northern Hemisphere Sunday

There will be a total lunar eclipse taking place Sunday, May 15, and it will be visible from Lake Tahoe as long as the clouds cooperate. The partial eclipse starts at 7:59 p.m., with a total eclipse from 8:29 p.m. to 9:53 p.m. The event will be ending at 11:51 p.m.
The full moon will be in the shadow of the Earth, turning it a red hue, giving it the name of Blood Moon. This eclipse is also known as the Flower Moon due to it happening when there is an abundance of flowers in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Lake Tahoe Hi-Lo's 4WD Club is holding a free, hands-on OHV 4x4 Clinic on Saturday, May 21, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All participants need to meet at the Sawmill Pond parking lot at 9:00 a.m.
This Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Clinic will focus on how to properly handle your 4x4 vehicle, environmental issues relevant to the sport of 4-wheeling, available local trails, and recommended equipment for 4WD vehicles. I have known Tamara Wallace for about 30 years, from the first time she joined the Lake Tahoe Kiwanis Club. Even back then she was interested in helping people.
As South Lake Tahoe Chamber CEO, her organizational skills and ability to bring clarity to the situations we faced in our city, made decision-making for the board easy. She usually didn’t take sides, but instead explained the pros and cons of the issues. To do that she had to think through the issues.

The American Legion Auxiliary extends our sincere thanks to Helen Johnson for her generous donation of $5,000 to Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795. The donation will be used for much-needed electrical, chimney, parking area repairs, and the replacement of the recently stolen highway sign. South Lake Tahoe Cub Scouts help plant seedlings in Caldor Fire area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cub Scout Pack 592 spent the day April 30 with the Sugar Pine Foundation, Wells Fargo, and other community members and helped plant 1,000 Sugar Pine and Jeffrey Pine seedlings. They planted them in the Mule Deer/Angora area that had been bulldozed to make fire lines created during the Caldo Fire last year.
This community service project was the third tree-planting effort that the Cub Scouts have participated in this year, and will likely become an annual event.

DCSO seeking public’s assistance in locating stolen trailer

MINDEN, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a trailer stolen from a Johnson Lane area home.
The trailer, shown above, is a 2004 Champion brand, 18-foot-long flatbed tilt trailer, brick red in color. It has Nevada plates, license number 37460W.
Between May 10 and May 12, 2022, an unknown person entered the backyard of a residence while the resident was out of town.
There are no known suspects at this time.
Caltrans alerts motorists of roundabout work project on SR89 on North Shore

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Caltrans is alerting State Route 89 south motorists to expect a lane reduction in the two-lane roundabout just north of Deerfield Drive for the next couple of weeks.
Maintenance crews, in coordination with the Town of Truckee, will be performing grading work in the roundabout to improve drainage and reduce water ponding. William “Billy” Roland Bradford ~ 1974 - 2022

It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of Badass, William “Billy” Roland Bradford, on April 15, 2022. Billy was born in Huntington Beach, Calif. on September 9, 1974, to Dianne Mills and John Bradford, Jr. Billy graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, attended Long Beach City College, and moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1999, where he became a general contractor and took pride in the work he created through his craftsmanship around the area, over the years.

There are several opportunities for registered voters to cast their ballot.
Gerald “Jerry” Johnson ~ 1935 - 2022

Gerald “Jerry” Johnson passed away peacefully in his home in South Lake Tahoe of natural causes on April 29, 2022, just before his 86th birthday. Jerry was born on May 1, 1935, in Glendale, Calif. to Albert and Francis Johnson. He had one younger sister, Cookie.
Liberty Utilities outage in part of South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE: The power was restored by 10:30 p.m.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting a power outage to parts of the Bijou area in South Lake Tahoe Thursday evening. It is not widespread and they are investigating the cause.
The estimation of restoral of the 170 customers that are without power at this time is 10:59 p.m.

New South Lake Tahoe hotel preparing to open its doors

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been years in the making, but the goal line is just weeks away for the new Hampton Inn & Suites in South Lake Tahoe. Finishing touches are being placed on the lodging property's 120 rooms and suites, indoor swimming pool, restaurant, lobby bar with six on-tap beers and wine, and landscaping.
It's not your typical Hampton Inn with custom features throughout, including chandeliers, solar panels, and energy efficiency. The ski lockers will have boot and glove warmers, and the property has a fire pit, hot tub, outside heaters, and bike storage.
Barbara Ann (Bales) Morris ~ May 5, 1947 - April 1, 2022

Reunited with the love of her life, Ben, after succumbing to Sepsis/Septic Shock. Barbara was surrounded by her family, cheering her on at the end of her earthly race.
Barbara loved her family, making crafts, using imagination, teaching, and working with children. She was Grandma to so many “bonus” kids in her life, always cheering them on and freely giving out hugs and affection to anyone who needed it.
Kevin W Kinney ~ March 14, 1961 - May 4, 2022

Kevin W Kinney passed away peacefully at his home on May 4, 2022. Kevin was born and raised in Chico, Calif. He moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1987.
Kevin started a franchise in the carpet cleaning world and then decided to have his own company. Kinneys Carpet Care was formulated and has been a household name since the 1990s.
He loved fishing, camping, and restoring old cars. He always had a way of helping a friend when they really needed it. When he was introduced to his wife Diane he sent her a dozen red roses every month. He referred to their courtship as a “budding relationship”.
