Column: The 2012 Regional Plan delivers on its promise

Ten years ago this December, a major shift took place in the Tahoe Basin. On December 12, 2012, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board approved a critical update to the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan that brought environmental policies into the 21st century and strengthened the bi-state partnership that formed TRPA. While there is much more to do, the upcoming milestone is an opportunity to capture the region’s collective progress and carry epic collaboration forward to confront new challenges.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport showcases the story and art of the Stewart Indian School

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) has partnered with the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum, Nevada State Museum, Nevada Indian Commission, Visit Carson City, and Great Basin Native Artists Collective on a powerful and moving art exhibition entitled, “We remember your sacrifices, you are not forgotten: The story and art of the Stewart Indian School.”
10,000 more ballots tabulated in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Ten thousand more ballots have been tabulated since Tuesday, leaving little change in the results for the east slope. There remain approximately 16,000 ballots to be counted. The final count is expected on Tuesday, November 15 at 5 p.m. as the elections office is closed for Veterans Day. So far, 51.92 percent of the county's 138,537 registered voters have had their ballots processed and tabulated.
As of Thursday, November 10 at 5 p.m.:

Snow and cold temperatures allow Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar to open early

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood, and Northstar have all pushed up their opening dates to this Saturday, November 12. Mother Nature delivered the goods and the resorts are ready earlier than expected. The cold weather and snow have allowed for natural snow to accumulate along with their snowmaking teams.
This will be both Northstar's and Kirkwood's 50th anniversary season.
Kirkwood is opening 20 days earlier than expected, and Heavenly and Northstar are a week before what was previously announced.
South Lake Tahoe Carpenter's Union shares Halloween photos from their Heavenly Village booth

The local 1789 Carpenters had a booth at the Heavenly Village Halloween celebration and wanted to share photos of some of those who stopped by.
Heavenly Village held a free Halloween party with multiple stops for candy from businesses in the Village as well as community members like the carpenters who had a booth for the celebrants to come by for candy.
Make plans to stop by the event in 2023.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Now that signs of winter are here and temperatures are starting to drop, thoughts turn to warming up in front of an indoor fire. When using fireplaces/wood stoves and heating appliances indoors this winter it’s very important to remember a few safety tips and precautions. Heating equipment and improper ash disposal are leading causes of home and wildland fires during the fall and winter months.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Elections Office is notifying county residents about a fake text message being sent out to voters by a third party, pretending to be Senator Catherine Cortez Masto.
The message is not being sent out by County elections officials. If you receive this message, do not reply and disregard it.

Tahoe Fund issues call for 2023 projects around Lake Tahoe

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tahoe Fund has announced the opening of its annual call for projects. The nonprofit is seeking projects for its 2023 portfolio that will increase the pace and scale of forest restoration, improve lake clarity, expand sustainable recreation, provide innovative solutions to transportation challenges and create more stewards of Lake Tahoe. Priority projects will also break down barriers to access and increase inclusion for underserved communities in Tahoe.

Due to the snow and road conditions, Lake Tahoe Unified School District is calling for a 2-hour delay start today, November 9.
The bus schedules are posted on the district website, page 2 of the list of schedules.
Washoe county schools are also on a 2-hour delay.
Tahoe Truckee School District is on a regular schedule.
Douglas County School District is not announcing any closures or delays.

This month we’d like to highlight Elevated Digital Learning Academy!
Elevated is LTUSD’s online school. The school was born in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic but wow, has online education changed since then!

The Gin Blossoms will highlight the New Year's Eve celebration on the outdoor stage, and the month will feature a community Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, Breakfast With Santa, a rail jam, characters on ice, photos with Santa and Mrs. Santa, paint and sip, and lots more.

Chabad at Lake Tahoe will be hosting a historic evening with Major Rami Sherman, a veteran of the Israel Defense Special Operation Forces, on Sunday, November 27.
During the terror-filled years of 1972-1980, Rami served in the Israel Defense Forces’ most elite commando unit. He participated in several covert operations in Israel’s mighty struggle against Arab terrorism.
2022-23 winter season gets started at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe this Friday

With snow still falling at Lake Tahoe, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has announced they are opening this Friday, November 11. The resort will be closed mid-week, Nov. 14-18 to finish work on the new Lakeview Express chairlift, and reopen for daily operations for the 2022-23 winter season on Saturday, Nov. 19.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again, Toys for Tots is collecting toys and names of children who need them in South Lake Tahoe.
There are drop boxes at hardware stores, banks, fire stations, and Blue Zone Sports.
Stuff-a-Truck with toys will be in the TJMaxx/Blue Zone parking lot in South Lake Tahoe on November 19 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be a fire truck for ids, magic kits for anyone who wants them, treats, swag, and raffle prizes from local donors.
The Road Beat: 2023 Genesis GV60 review

What is it?
The first all-electric vehicle from Genesis, the luxury subdivision of Hyundai/Kia. Slotting in below the GV70 and GV80 SUVs in terms of size, the GV60 isn't any cheaper, but it is wildly more powerful in this spec due to its all-electric powertrain that makes 429 horsepower (and 483 temporarily for extra boost). Does this compact luxury crossover make any sense, though?

Car crashes into boulder on US50 at Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A car crashed into a large boulder on US50 Sunday evening, causing some injuries and damage to the vehicle.
At approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, a Honda Accord was traveling west on the highway near the area of several rockslides earlier in the year. A boulder almost four feet in width had fallen onto the roadway and the driver of the Honda could not miss it.
Airbags were deployed and the three people in the vehicle had some injuries that were tended to by Lake Valley Fire paramedics. The damaged vehicle was towed away.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Monday night’s Veteran’s Musical Tribute at South Tahoe Middle School has been canceled due to weather. Staff is discussing alternative options and they will inform the public on possible future dates.
Also postponed due to weather is the Lake Tahoe Historical Society's Tuesday evening Fireside Chat at Camp Richardson. With heavy snow expected the speaker's drive from Reno would be challenging and the organizers did not want the public to be unsafe in traveling to the event. A new date will be released shortly.
Prescribed fire operations continue around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Conditions and weather permitting, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will be burning piles in several locations around Lake Tahoe. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a two-hour delayed start Monday, November 7. Schools will be opening two hours later than normal times. Busses will be operating two hours later than their normal schedule. Schools will release at the regularly scheduled time. Tahoe Truckee School District schools will be open on a regular schedule. However, due to the stormy winds and visibility issues, there is the possibility of school buses being delayed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There were many events for South Lake Tahoe treat-or-treaters to enjoy this year in addition to traditional door-to-door candy seekers, from trunk-or-treating at two local churches, Kahle Community Center, Presbyterian Conference Center and the Heavenly Village. There was no shortage of fun and candy!
Time changes brings us Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

With the end of daylight saving time, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and its traffic safety partners are reminding motorists about the impact the time change and a lack of adequate sleep can have on their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
The CHP has partnered with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and the National Sleep Foundation in recognizing November 6-12 as Drowsy Driving Prevention Week to raise awareness about the importance of a good night's rest before driving.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a delayed start to the incoming storm. It is reaching Lake Tahoe tonight with increasing winds into early Monday morning across the Sierra and western Nevada. Expect periods of heavy snowfall in the Sierra beginning this evening through Monday with light rain/snow for Western Nevada valleys. A second wave of heavy snow is expected across the Sierra on Tuesday which is when valleys will see their best potential to pick up a few inches of snowfall. Much colder temperatures will prevail behind the front and into the start of the weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What turned out to be the holiday event of the season, the Festival of Winter Lights returns to South Lake Tahoe Friday, December 9, and Saturday, December 10.
The City of South Lake Tahoe, In partnership with the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, is holding the two-night event that will feature music, singing, dancing, sleigh rides, the Christmas Fire Truck, light displays, local vendors, food and drink, tours of the museum and cabin, and of course, Santa!
Bread & Broth holds successful Cram-a-Hearse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't your typical ask for food to fill backpacks with weekend food for South Lake Tahoe children. Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) held a Cram-A-Hearse event in front of the Grocery Outlet just before Halloween. They typically stuff a police cruiser with food, but because a local volunteer owns a hearse and it was almost Halloween - why not change the vehicle?
It was so fun and every child that came by received an ice cream, a bag of candy, and a stuffed animal, all from Peter Spellman, the owner of the hearse.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office asks for public's help in identifying suspect

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After exhausting all leads, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect in an August burglary.
On August 10, 2022, at about at about 9:51 p.m., an unknown male suspect was captured on surveillance video entering a fenced area of a construction site in the North Sunridge area. The suspect leaves the area and returned on August 11 at approximately 12:30 a.m. and steals the battery from a backhoe at the construction site.

South Lake Tahoe mural release party celebrates art in the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first art project approved and partially funded by the new South Lake Tahoe Arts, Culture, and Tourism Commission was celebrated on Halloween with the artists, commissioners, members from the Tahoe Art League, and the community.
On the back of the Blue Dog Pizza building at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd., and Sierra Blvd., the mural was painted by local artist Annie Walker and is titled 'Sierra Juniper.'
Walker has been a working artist for 13 years, coming from New Orleans via San Francisco.

With end of fire season, burn ban lifted around Lake Tahoe

After the first snow of the season, the summer-long burn suspension was formally lifted by CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit and CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit. CAL FIRE’s lifting of restrictions indicates the end of our local fire season. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District also ended its summer restrictions.
Since outdoor wood fires are not allowed in the South Lake Tahoe city limits, no outside wood fires (including backyard fire pits) are allowed but charcoal fires are now allowed.
Don't forget to turn the clocks back this weekend!

This weekend when you 'fall back,' remember to 'Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery.' Be sure to check and change your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide batteries to ensure they are working properly.
"Fall back" at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, California residents will have to set their clocks back by one hour.
National Runway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month

November is National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month. Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away annually, and approximately 4.2 million young adults experience some form of homelessness each year. If all of these young people lived in one city, it would be the fifth largest city in the United States.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club continues to add improvements to the Soroptimist Stadium: Home of Girls Softball. The field now has a new yellow fence cap lining the perimeter of the outfield fence thanks to volunteers from SISLT and the South Tahoe Adult Softball League. The fence cap is a necessary safety feature to increase perimeter visibility and cover the jagged fencing edges to prevent injuries as players reach for the ball.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With lake-effect snow surprising many Thursday morning, the storm passed the Lake Tahoe Basin leaving about 8" of snow at lake level over two days. But, don't put away that shovel!
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Lake Tahoe Basin from noon on Sunday, November 6 until Wednesday, November 9 at 4 a.m.

Robbery at South Lake Tahoe 7-11 on Emerald Bay Road

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 7-11 on Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe was robbed early Thursday morning. South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the store at approximately 1:22 a.m. on November 3 to a report of a robbery.
The 7-11 employee on duty reported a man came into the store at 1:20 a.m. and pointed a handgun at them, demanding money. The suspect ran out of the store with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot.
SLTPD officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
