Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe invites the public to their meeting on Wednesday, March 27 when they host a program about Women's Rights. In honor of International Women's Day, Club President Laurie Ault will be the speaker.
The previous program with a George and Ella Whittell history program has been postponed.
No RSVPs are necessary.
The meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the South Tahoe Association of Realtors building at 2307 James Avenue.

If a child is not proficient in reading by 3rd grade, they are at a higher risk of not graduating from high school.
It is due to these studies that today's news can be a game changer for the 8,000 children living in El Dorado County.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The family of the two young men involved in Saturday's mountain lion attack near Georgetown have released updated information. Taylen Robert Claude Brooks, 21, was killed, and his brother Wyatt Jay Charles Brooks, 18, was severely injured.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Other than a slight chance of showers over the Sierra and western Basin this afternoon, the first half of the week will feature dry conditions and gradual warming, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The next storm arrives on Wednesday with periods of unsettled weather lasting through Easter weekend.
Liberty power outage in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/25/2024 - 9:34am10PM Update: Over 500 customers of Liberty were without power for several hours Monday, with a handful still out at this hour. Liberty estimates all will be restored by 1:30 a.m.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A power outage was reported for a section of the South Shore Monday morning, just before 10 a.m. At this time, Liberty is reporting 3814 customers without electricity. It is affecting people from Elks Club to the Y in Meyers/South Lake Tahoe.
The cause of the unplanned outage is unknown at this time.
According to the Liberty outage map, the estimated restoral is by 2:30 p.m.

The first step is to complete the online pre-enrollment at https://laketahoe.asp.aeries.net/air, and on ltusd.org under the “Schools” tab, visit https://www.ltusd.org/schools/kindergarten_tk_registration_24_25 and see the list of what to do next. Please bring in the described paperwork to your zoned elementary school site to complete the registration process.
Tahoe Elite Cheer set to being second season

There will be a cheer clinic on May 22 and 23 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by cheer camp May 29-30, also at the Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Carol was born in Eugene (Lane County), Oregon, to Wayne Mac Adam and Mary (Sissler) Mac Adam on March 5, 1937. Carol’s identical twin sister, Eleanor Proctor, predeceased Carol in July, 2007, as did Jeanette Mac Adam, an older sister, who passed in 2019. Carol has one cousin, Phillip Sissler of Fossil, Oregon, with whom she remained close over the years.
Mountain lion kills man in El Dorado County, injures his brother

The family is grateful for the prayers and condolences from the community however wishes for privacy to process this tragic event.
Additionally, there have been multiple “Go Fund Me” accounts allegedly set up in support of the family. These accounts are not associated with the family or authorized by the family, according to EDSO.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School Board (DCSB) held a special meeting on Thursday to correct their actions the previous week when there was a violation of the Open Meeting Law (OML).
During their March 13 meeting, new board member Yvonne Wagstaff made a motion Tuesday to select Jeanne Dwyer as superintendent, and the motion passed 5-0 with current Board President David Burns and Past President Susan Jansen abstaining.

For a comparison, we have looked at the budgets for the 2017-18, 2020-21, and 2023-24 school years. For the same years, we also looked at the number of staff at the District level and school enrollment.

Last week, TRPA representatives joined a coalition of Lake Tahoe supporters in Washington D.C. to urge the extension of a key piece of legislation that has been pivotal in Lake Tahoe’s preservation. The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act is set to expire in September of this year, putting a major source of federal funding at risk.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - George Whittell High School (Whittell) earned accolades this week, once for earning the NIAA Tahoe Basin Ski League All-Academic Team for having the highest GPA of its athletes, and second for Logan Robertson's abilities on the slopes.
Robertson represented Whittell at the Western US High School Championships in Mammoth, California this past week as a member of the Tahoe Basin Ski League team (TBSL). The team took first place in both Slalom and Giant Slalom as they competed against teams from seven different states.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on Thursday after attempting to hide from law enforcement on the hill above Amerigas.
A deputy from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) attempted to pull over a vehicle being driven recklessly at approximately 10:51 a.m. on US50 near Elks Club Drive. The driver attempted to abscond from EDSO and hide his vehicle behind the local Amerigas. After attempting to hide his vehicle, the driver ran through the snow into the forested area attempting to flee from the deputy.

The Tahoe Learning Haven's April forum will focus on financial savings plans for higher education in California and Nevada. This forum is for parents of students who plan to attend some form of higher education after high school.
The free forum will be held on April 3 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.
Some financial plans provide free funds (CalKids) for qualifying families. Both California and Nevada representatives will discuss 529 plans that are simple and easy to set up and use.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 31-year-old Douglas County man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted lewdness with a child under 16 years of age, luring a child, using a child to produce pornography, and indecent or obscene exposure in the presence of a child.
On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) arrested Valeriu Monchamp of Gardnerville and he is currently in the Minden jail on a $225,649 bail hold.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Supervisor Brooke Laine held a community vacation home rental (VHR) meeting Wednesday to review the results of the 13-member VHR Advisory Committee. Laine put together a volunteer committee from many segments of the community to evaluate the current VHR ordinance over the last eight months. Their goal was to create a document to help reduce community divisiveness and discover where the community might find common interests and common ground on the design and management of its VHR Program.

Man facing multiple life sentences after South Lake Tahoe jury finds him guilty

On July 17 and 18, 2021, Joshua Thomas Lee Gardner went to the Sunray Motel in South Lake Tahoe to collect a drug debt from a woman who lived there. Once inside her room, Gardner robbed the victim at gunpoint and threatened to kill her.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is Crazy Sock Day at Sierra House Elementary on Thursday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. Everyone is being encouraged to wear crazy, mismatched, silly, wild, or bright socks to school to recognize the five Down syndrome students who attend the school in South Lake Tahoe.
Not only will everyone be wearing the crazy socks, but the school will be decorated in colored paper socks.

Sunrise Easter Service at Donaldson Amphitheater at 7 a.m.
FREE Pancake Breakfast in the Tahoe Center from 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Then, starting at 9:30 a.m., the fun begins on the Tahoe Lawn: Morning Sing Easter Edition, Faire Games, Easter EggHunt, Pictures with the Easter Bunny, and lots of candy!
The event is scheduled to wrap up at 11 a.m.

A large area of the South Shore is not covered by bus routes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Transportation services on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have changed over the years, going from free casino shuttles to the fun, Nifty Fifty trollies, and many other steps along the way. There have been many challenges, but a new proposition is in the works to help fix it.
Currently, the South Shore is serviced by two fixed bus routes along US50 provided by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). There is a large area that is not serviced by a bus, including Meyers (except for paratransit services).
Backcountry Film Festival coming to South Lake Tahoe

The Backcountry Film Festival is a celebration of the human-powered experience and a gathering place for the snowsports community. it is coming to South Lake Tahoe on April 9 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at South Lake Brewing Company.
Agenda for Wednesday's "State of the District" hosted by Lake Tahoe Unified School District

Just as in last year's event, the agenda includes a series of tabletop discussions where those gathered at each table tackle a series of questions. There is also a panel discussion concerning the status of current facilities.

Conservancy announces acquisition of Motel 6 property and surrounding sensitive land
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/19/2024 - 12:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After months of negotiations, Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe and the 31 surrounding acres are being sold, and escrow should close in the coming weeks. The motel, the adjacent vacant restaurant, and the parking lot will be removed and the environmentally sensitive land along the Upper Truckee River will be restored and preserved.
The land was owned by the Knox Johnson family.
Contract signed as ExplorUS expands operations at Camp RIchardson to include marina

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the U.S. Forest Service gave the 20-year concessionaire permit for Camp Richardson to ExplorUS, the marina was still owned and operated by Bob Hassett and Camp Richardson Resort Incorporated (CRRI). Hassett was the former concessionaire of the government-owned resort.
A one-year contract was signed this month to have ExplorUS take over operations of the marina.

We’ve had a home in South Lake Tahoe for over 40 years and I have been studying the housing issue for a long time. Whereas Amelia Richmond, President of the Vacancy Tax initiative, has only lived in South Lake Tahoe a short time. Richmond complains that about 1,000 local workers live in Nevada and commute to jobs in South Lake Tahoe.
