Santa's elves visit the Children's Memorial Tree in South Lake Tahoe

The Elves did it again!! They visited the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial Tree in the park at Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Wildwood Avenue for the 11th straight year, leaving behind signs of Christmas with stockings and decorations.

There is a stocking at the tree for the over 250 children who are memorialized there.

The memorial was created 30 years ago when tragedy struck the local community when South Tahoe High students Rory Hrbacek, Sandy Haynes, and Casey Wells died in a single-vehicle accident on Pioneer Trail.

Tahoe Fund grants $30,250 to regional volunteer search and rescue organizations

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tahoe Fund granted $30,250 to Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Hasty Team for critical equipment upgrades. These two regional volunteer search and rescue teams, who collectively responded to over 120 missions last year, now have new tools to help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of future rescues.

Ashworth named presiding judge in El Dorado County, McLaughlin now assistant presiding judge

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Superior Court has announced the selection of Hon. Vicki Ashworth as presiding judge, and Hon. Michael J. McLaughlin as assistant presiding judge. They will both serve a two-year term starting January 1, 2022.

Mt. Rose Ski Area to open Friday

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe announced it will open for the season on Friday, Dec. 10 for skiing and snowboarding.

Top to bottom skiing and snowboarding will be available starting at 9:00 a.m. from the Main Lodge. The Northwest Express lift is scheduled to operate serving intermediate and advanced terrain only. Open trails will include Upper Northwest Passage down through the Kit Carson Bowl. Beginner terrain is not currently available.

Father and son accused of reckless arson in starting Caldor Fire

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. A father and son are now under arrest, accused of reckless arson in connection with the Caldor Fire, the massive wildfire that burned more than 200,000 acres in El Dorado and Amador Counties.

The El Dorado County District Attorney's (DA) office announced Wednesday that David Scott Smith, 66 of Somerset, and Travis Shane Smith, 32 of Folsom, were arrested pursuant to Ramey warrants. A Ramey warrant is a warrant that is issued before criminal charges are filed.

Restore Upper Truckee River project will reconfigure golf course while protecting Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Restore Upper Truckee River Project would reconfigure and revitalize the 60-year-old Lake Tahoe Golf Course and restore the 1.5-mile river segment that runs through California State Parks to improve the river habitat and water quality of Lake Tahoe.

A new Environmental Impact Statement (EIR) is underway with a scoping meeting, open to the public, planned in two remote sessions on January 25, 2022.

Devin Middlebrook selected as mayor of South Lake Tahoe, Cristi Creegan as mayor pro tem

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Devin Middlebrook was selected as mayor of South Lake Tahoe during Tuesday's city council meeting, and Cristi Creegan was selected as mayor pro tem.

The mayor is a leadership position that leads council meetings and is a spokesperson for the City, but only comes with one extra power and that is the ability to call a special meeting. The position, along with that of mayor pro tem is changed annually through a vote of councilmembers.

Middlebrook had no competition but both Cody Bass and Cristi Creegan expressed a desire for the open Mayor pro tem spot.

Winter Storm Watch in place for Lake Tahoe this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding area from December 8 at 4:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m. on December 9.

WHAT...Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 10 inches, except 8 to 13 inches above 7000 feet possible. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph.

Public input sought on Douglas County Redistricting map

Douglas County officials have introduced proposed redistricting maps and are starting the process to solicit feedback from the public.

Redistricting is a process of redrawing the boundaries of the election districts within the County to reflect changes in population. Every 10 years, after receiving data from the Census, the district boundaries must be redrawn so that each district is substantially equal in population. Federal and state laws, including the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act, provide legal requirements for redistricting.

Tony Sears retires after 31 years in the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Monday starts the first full week of retirement for Tony Sears. He said his goodbyes to his co-workers at the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in South Lake Tahoe, a place he'd called home since joining as a deputy district attorney on October 22, 1990.

"Sometimes it feels like I just got here," said Sears as he reflected over his three decades on the South Shore.

South Tahoe High Girls Basketball team wins three-game tournament in Rocklin

The South Tahoe High Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Rocklin this weekend for a three-game tournament and came home undefeated and with top honors.

The well-rounded young team has three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and one freshman. They are coached by Mike Neiger and Cheryl Vanos Embry.

On Friday, the Vikings played Alpha Charter from Elverta, Calif., winning with a score of 39-28 behind Viking Ivy Gonzalez's 13 points.

Finally signs of winter in the Lake Tahoe weather forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The weather patterns in the Sierra will finally be changing to a more seasonal pattern of cooler temperatures and snow (yes, that word "snow"). Snowfall is possible for all elevations on Thursday with much colder temperatures into next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

High pressure will continue to retrograde westward over the Pacific which will allow weather systems to affect our region through at least mid-month. After this week's storms look for another system early next week.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbery suspect indicted for five bank robberies

A man authorities believe is responsible for five bank robberies including one in South Lake Tahoe has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

John William Boland, 38, of Mammoth Lakes, has been charged with five counts of bank robbery and two counts of attempted robbery, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced Thursday.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Local 2441 holding toy and clothing drive for Children's Hospital

STATELINE, Nev. - The members of Tahoe Douglas Firefighters Local 2441 are collecting new toys and children's clothing through December 20. All donations will go to the children at Renown Children's Hospital in Reno.

DCSO reminds public of road closures before and during Parade of Lights Saturday

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The annual Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday, December 4 at 5:00 p.m. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is reminding the public about the road closures which will occur prior to the start of the parade.

Roads will close approximately 30 minutes before the parade begins.

Parade floats will begin to roll from Heritage Park onto Main Street from Eddy Street and will head north through town, make a left on Esmeralda, and make their way to the end at Minden Town Park.

Stephen Richard Kyte ~ 1950 – 2021

Steve Kyte died peacefully, on November 24, 2021, in Palo Alto, California, at the home of his sister, from the effects of brain cancer (glioblastoma), surrounded by family and under the care of Mission Hospice. He was 71.

Steve was born on April 10, 1950, to Ruth Gardiner Kyte and Donald Kyte in Lynwood, California. He grew up in South Gate, a suburb of Los Angeles, where he attended State Street Elementary School, South Gate Junior High, and graduated from South Gate High School in 1968. He attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College where he studied electronics.

Tahoe South Events Center on schedule to open in January 2023

STATELINE, Nev. - The first steel beams in the new Tahoe South Events Center were placed this week as clear weather allowed building progress to continue at a brisk pace. The Phase 2 construction schedule on the 143,000 square-foot, multi-purpose facility was adjusted to accommodate lost workdays due to both weather and fire impacts. Cooperation among Tahoe Basin partners has helped the project make up lost time.

Forest Service names new supervisor and deputy for Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced the selection of Erick Walker as the new forest supervisor and Vicki Lankford as the new deputy forest supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Walker arrived on Nov. 22 and comes to the lake from the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest (NF) in Washington state, where he had served as the Deputy Forest Supervisor since May 2018.

Angel of Tahoe spreads Christmas cheer to South Lake Tahoe children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Youth & Family Services is helping spread cheer this season by purchasing gifts for children in need thanks to Lisa Maloff.

Due to the pandemic, the agency was unable to host a Christmas party as they normally do. However, gifts were purchased and wrapped for children who receive services through the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Family Resource Center, and Live Violence Free.

TAMBA starts [Re]Build the Future: December Donor Drive to fix trails damaged in Caldor Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) announced a month-long fundraiser called the [Re]Build the Future: December Donor Drive to motivate support of efforts to rebuild and restore trails impacted by the recent Caldor Fire. Funds raised before the end of the year will allow the non-profit organization to address these challenges so they may continue developing 50 miles of multi-use trail basin-wide.
