SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Junior Optimist Club is holding a fun field day for kids in grades K-8 on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Tahoe High School softball and baseball fields.
Kids get to try out new things offered at the high school and in the community. There will be various activities, including softball, wrestling, cheer/dance, football, volleyball, arts and crafts, and Career Technical Education (CTE) classes like sports medicine. Heavenly Ski Patrol and many other community participants will also be at the event.
Parking area at Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay partially opens June 1
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/31/2024 - 12:44pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – To ease parking congestion in the popular Bayview Trailhead & Day-Use Area near Emerald Bay, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will open a portion of the parking area tomorrow, June 1, 2024.
The parking fee is $10, and visitors should be aware that construction is ongoing and the parking area may close occasionally throughout the summer. Visitors should use caution in areas with active construction activity and equipment. No overnight parking is permitted.
TTD adds stops for East Shore Express this summer, service starts June 28

This strategic change is meant to enhance access and convenience for riders.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Simpson University in Redding, California is set to start its inaugural season for football this fall, and the team will have another South Tahoe High School graduate, Allen Aparicio, on the roster.
Allen will graduate in June, and head to Redding as a defensive back for the Simpson Red Hawks.

Rose at Lake Tahoe, has created a foundation to support foster youth in the Reno/Northern Nevada area. The RennerVation Foundation is holding a summer camp for those foster youth at the 4H Camp in Stateline from July 1-5, 2024, and camp counselors are still needed.
The biggest need is for male cabin counselors and high-school-age counselors in training. A cabin houses about 10-12 youths.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - At its regular meeting on May 21, 2024, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the period of May through October 2024 as Wildfire Awareness Season as a call for residents in El Dorado County to prepare for wildfire.
Although late spring rains delayed the typical onset of dry fire-prone conditions, the weather is changing as evidenced by the increase in vegetation fires in the last few weeks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There were 16,800 seedlings planted this spring, a lot of little trees including sugar pines, Jeffrey pines, and white pines, according to the Sugar Pine Foundation.
They said there are now a lot of little trees to water this summer!
"Thanks to lucky timing of our planting events, we managed to stay mostly dry even though it rained and snowed quite a bit in April and May," said the Sugar Pine Foundation in a letter to supporters. "Of course, the precipitation was fantastic for watering our newly planted baby seedlings!"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has completed its investigation into the shooting of a bear inside a South Lake Tahoe home. They said that, after a formal law enforcement investigation into the matter, the homeowner who shot the bear did nothing illegal and would not face any charges.
On Monday, May 27 at approximately 2:30 p.m., wildlife officers were called to a home off of Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe after being notified a bear had been shot and killed by a homeowner.

A long-time local resident shot a bear in his kitchen, feeling his and his dog's safety was being threatened after the sub-adult bear entered his house through a door to the fenced backyard. Even more sad is the first news of this event that many people saw was a social media post filled with passion and pitchforks, but sans the actual facts of what happened.

Four suspects arrested by DCSO on suspicion of e-bike thefts, names below
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Four men were arrested by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) on Sunday, May 26 after an investigation into a series of e-bike thefts across the county.
DCSO deputies identified several suspects driving a white Dodge panel van. The four suspects were located at Walmart in Gardnerville, and when DCSO found them four e-bikes were recovered with a value of approximately $5,900.
Deputies arrested:
Victor Anguiano from San Pablo, Calif., age 29, bail was set at $53,149 Emmanuel Villagomez-Morales from San Pablo, Calif., age 31, bail was set at $58,152

Head-on collision between motorcycles leaves one man dead, other injured near Red Lake

On Monday, May 27 at approximately 5 p.m., Marcus Canizales was riding his 2007 Harley Davidson V-Rod west on SR-88, near Red Lake, at approximately 65-70 MPH. Heading east was a 2007 BMW K1200 GT motorcycle driven by a 52-year-old Gardnerville, Nev. man, also at 65-70 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The spring rollercoaster on weather at Lake Tahoe is over, for the time being, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is calling for a calm and sunny week ahead.
Warm and generally dry weather prevails through the week. Above-average temperatures continue, except during mid-week. There are low chances for isolated showers Tuesday for the Sierra, northeast California and far western Nevada.

He mentions that numerous county leaders are against him because he is not part of the “good old boys” club. In other newsletters, he has stated that he does not do “backroom” deals and he is transparent. Not true!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A coalition of South Lake Tahoe chambers, realtors, lodging and restaurant groups, small business owners, and residents are holding an anti-vacancy tax campaign kick-off on Thursday, May 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
There is a measure on the November ballot that would, if approved, tax homes vacant more than one-half year or more up to $6,000 per year in the city limits. The Tahoe Chamber and South Tahoe Chamber, along with the rest of their "Keep Community First" coalition.

Work resumes Tuesday on Gas Line Replacement Project on SR28 between Kings Beach and Tahoe City

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.
One-way traffic control is scheduled between Mackinaw Road and Rocky Ridge Road from Tuesday, May 28 at 10 p.m. until Friday, May 31 at noon.
South Lake Tahoe sales tax collection down in 4th quarter

On May 8th, I attended a candidate forum sponsored by Elevate Douglas County at the Genoa Town Hall. Nathan Tolbert was one of three candidates for the Board of County Commissioners who spoke. The forum was well attended.

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 05/25/2024 - 9:41amNow that the vacancy tax has been qualified for the November ballot, the City council is faced with the arduous task of trying to figure out how to make it all work. A difficult task at best and no doubt met with different opinions on what is a fair balance. A blanket policy is certainly not the answer, and I would suggest that there must be certain exemptions allowed if this initiative does indeed pass. I would like to suggest for consideration the following. Others may have additional issues to declare.

Note left behind with cub.
LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Mother's Day weekend, someone left a bear cub in a pet crate in the driveway of the Bear League office in Homewood. A note was attached, asking the Bear League to "please help Moses he doesn't have a mother."
The cub was about seven pounds, and almost three months old.
With similarities to the biblical Moses who was placed in a basket and floated down the Nile River to escape death, the bear Moses would have certainly faced death if it was left in the wild alone, without its mother.

Car fails to yield, hits Lake Tahoe Unified School District bus, injuring two
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/24/2024 - 11:21amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a collision between a bus from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and a Toyota Rav 4 on Friday morning, just before 8 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the bus was traveling on Sacramento Avenue when the Toyota pulled out from Merced Avenue where there was a stop sign, failing to yield to the bus which had the right of way. The vehicle then hit the bus.

His family purchased a small lot with the intention of building a house on it. At that time, many of the homes in the neighborhood had not yet been constructed. Finally, in 1973, construction began, and he hired someone to frame the house before building the rest with his own two hands.
