What is this 'atmospheric river' heading to Lake Tahoe?
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/04/2017 - 9:41pmImagine a long, narrow river in the sky about 250 to 375 miles wide, moving along with the weather. It transports water vapor with a flow several times faster than the water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. A river that, when it hits land, releases 30-50 percent of the area's annual precipitation in the form or rain or snow in just a couple of days.
This "river" is called an atmospheric river, and a powerful one can create extreme rainfall and floods and is capable of disrupting travel and causing catastrophic damage.

Important safety tips when navigating South Lake Tahoe roads during wet storm
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/04/2017 - 6:01pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe’s Snow Removal crews have been working around the clock to clear snow on city roadways. The combination of the snow and rain mixture is casing roadways to flood. It is imperative to provide snow removal vehicles the right of way as they work to clear roadways as well as blocked drainage ways.
Follow these safety tips:
Do not drive through water that is too deep. “Turn around – don’t drown”
Do not try and cross the snow berm in the center lane. Wait until snow removal crews have cleared the center lane for crossing.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/04/2017 - 12:33pmSince January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, what do you think of when you hear the term "human trafficking"? If you're like most people, you think of a story like the following true story, where police conduct an operation at a suspected residential brothel and encounter Sally, a 25-year-old citizen of Korea. Sally came to the U.S. having been promised a job as a maid. Instead, she was threatened with violence and forced to work in a brothel until she made $15,000. But the brothel owner retained $10,000, plus additional fees for food and a motel room when she could not work.

Drivers are pulling over on the roadway, a state highway, to experience snow play, and those parking are not paying attention to "No Parking" signs or the dangerous situation they are causing.
