Pavement grinding project on Highway 50 over Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/26/2016 - 5:33pmA grinding and paving project on more than nine miles of U.S. Highway 50 in the Sierra started today, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced.
The pavement rehabilitation project, designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve ride quality, is from Strawberry over Echo Summit to just west of Johnson Pass Road. Grinding and paving will take place around the clock Monday through 7 p.m. Thursday of this week and again Monday through Thursday of next week under one-way traffic control. Motorists should plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.

Dilapidated building torn down, property restoration to begin
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2016 - 6:43pmAn old, blue building on the corner of Highway 50 and Sawmill Road adjacent to the Upper Truckee River is being demolished, and the sensitive land it sits on will be restored to natural wetlands.
The building is near the site of the historic Ethel's Pie Shop.
The 1.05 acre parcel was acquired by the California Tahoe Conservancy under its Tahoe Livable Communities Program in December 2015.
Public input sought on Mental Health Services Act

The MHSA funds mental health services that are "recovery and resiliency" focused to children and their families, transitional age youth, adults and older adults. MHSA programs must provide integrated service experiences that are client and family driven, wellness, recovery and resilience focused, culturally competent, and include community collaboration.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care releases Golden Eagle over Red Lake
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2016 - 5:26pmThere were tears, smiles and applause as a Golden Eagle was released Sunday over Red Lake after being rehabilitated by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for the past month.
"Loyalton" was found by a Fish and Wildlife warden near the town of Loyalton with no real injuries, but was emaciated. LTWC volunteers call Loyalton a "he" but they don't really know as they don't test the sex on their eagles.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2016 - 9:13pmA number of runners and staff with Epic Tahoe Adventures were involved in Friday's collision between one of their rented motor homes and a SUV on Kingsbury Grade.
The South Lake Tahoe company was involved in the beta testing of a new running event which sent runners in teams of 12, running three legs each, in a 81 mile race from South Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Mountain.
South Lake Tahoe Tiger Team cleans up old Zehren's Nursery
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2016 - 8:54amSeveral different agencies that are part of the Tiger Team have come together to clean up the property of the former Zehren's Nursery on the corner of Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.
The Tiger Team, a program started by the City in January of 2015, was formed to be more efficient in addressing code compliance issues, complaints and eventual resolution. They are utilized in the active code compliance issues in an effort to continuously improve the visual quality of the built environment.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

Led by Lift Maintenance Manager, Kevin Higgins, Ryan Albertson, Jen Menzel, Jeff Reid, Kelli Renzi and Vinny Valdez arrived at Grace Hall at 3:00 p.m. and spent the next three and a half hours helping the Bread & Broth volunteers with the Monday evening dinner.
South Lake Tahoe man injured, Wellington woman killed in Kingsbury Grade collision
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2016 - 1:13pmKingsbury Grade was closed for several hours Friday after a collision between a motorhome and a Nissan Pathfinder sent several victims to area hospitals and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.
At 1:30 p.m., the two vehicles collided about 1.5 miles down from the summit on the valley side of the road. One person from each vehicle had to be extricated according to Fire Marshall Eric Guevin of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.
Care Flight landed at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade to transport the victims.
Group to apply for herbicide trial to fight invasive plants in Tahoe Keys

Artist unveils plans for Champions Plaza at Lakeview Commons
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2016 - 6:59amSculptor Gareth Curtiss, the artist chosen to create the bronze statue in South Lake Tahoe's Champions Plaza, unveiled the design during Tuesday'st City Council meeting.
The five to ten foot sculpture represents a flame with three men coming out of it to reach the golden ring, much like children reaching for the brass ring on a historic merry-go-round.
The ring at the top, about 18" in size, will be the top of the 1,500 pound bronze creation that Curtiss will create in his studios in Montana.

NHP urges caution as 50,000 bikers take to roads during Street Vibrations
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/22/2016 - 10:12pmThe 2016 Street Vibrations Motorcycle Rally is underway and the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is asking all motorists to use extra caution over the weekend. An estimated 50,000 motorcycle enthusiasts will take to northern Nevada streets during the event which runs September 21 - 25.
The NHP today announced that while they wish participating and or spectating to have a great time at the event, they also urge to be aware of this large influx of motorcycles and keep your eyes out for them while operating on our highways.

10 cited for alleged illegal contracting violations during South Lake Tahoe sting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/22/2016 - 7:58pmContractors State License Board (CSLB) investigators working with investigators from the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office cited ten men posing as licensed contractors during a recent sting operation.
Four of the individuals caught are Nevada residents, and the other six are South Lake Tahoe locals.
Posing as homeowners, investigators invited suspected unlicensed contractors to place bids on home improvement projects for a single-family home near the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course. Suspects placed bids ranging from $1,150 for interior painting to $6,000 for tile installation.

SLT Moose Lodge announces annual fishing derby winners

Travis Bank reeled in a 3.5 pound trout to win the derby, and took home a $100 Savings Certificate from El Dorado Savings. 2nd place winner Chance Rice won second place and a $50 Savings Certificate with his 3.2 lb trout. Third place winner Dillon Switzer also won a $50 Savings Certificate for his 2.5 lb catch.
Over 140 raffle prizes given out to the children.

Lake Tahoe Community College is offering another free, and fun, event for the public. This time it will be all about wildflowers on Friday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Aspen Room adjacent to the school's library.
Wildflower enthusiast Lisa Berry will share photos from her own collection of the best flowers of the season, and also share tips on where, and when, to find the best displays. Joining Lisa will be author and botanist Julie Caville.
Two fires in South Lake Tahoe - one caused by BBQ grill, other under investigation
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/21/2016 - 8:45pmThere have been two fires on the South Shore this week, one on Saturday, September 17, the other on the Monday the 19th.
The first one was in the 1000 block of Lodi Avenue at 9:16 p.m. A fire started with a gas grill and extended to the fence and from there, ignited the exterior of the neighbor's home. Firefighters from South Tahoe Fire Rescue responded and had the fire knocked down at 9:32 p.m.
One of the residents had a minor burn but no hospitalization was needed. Estimated property damage is $1,500.

A trip through a burning trailer with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/21/2016 - 6:39amI was invited to take part in training with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue in the demonstration fire trailer on Tuesday, an experience I won't soon forget, even though the temperatures I experienced were far below that of a real fire.
As I put on my fire pants, jacket, boots and head gear, my respect for firefighters instantly grew (even though it was already high on the scale). The heavy clothing protected my skin and clothing as I was exposed to 500 degrees, something most of us will never feel.
El Dorado County Public housing voucher wait list opens for first time in 8 years

The Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program (formerly known as Section 8) is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and provides rental assistance to income qualified individuals and families. Applicants must be United States citizens or have eligible immigration status.

Small earthquake near Emerald Bay Tuesday evening
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 9:16pmThe Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno is reporting a 2.4 magnitude earthquake on the South Shore near Emerald Bay.
It was recorded at 10:03 p.m. Tuesday, September 20.
This is just one of nine small earthquake in Northern Nevada in the last 12 hours, one of 23 in the last 24 hours. The South Lake Tahoe event was the largest of those.
Three rescued by Coast Guard on south end of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 8:38pmLAKE TAHOE - Three people were rescued after a distress call led the Coast Guard to the 25-foot vessel, JUST ENOUGH, as it was taking on water near the California/Nevada border of the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Tuesday afternoon.
The initial call came in at 3:00 p.m. and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County Sheriffs Department responded to the scene.

34 graduate from Douglas County Senior Citizen’s Academy

The goal of the Senior Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy is to provide crime fighting educational programs, fire safety and general information to senior citizens of Douglas County.

Fire at Spooner Lake brings out full response: Burns just over 1/2 acre and now under control
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 6:50pmA fire near Spooner Lake brought out multiple agencies and the two SuperScoopers staying at the Lake Tahoe Airport Tuesday afternoon, but the quick response kept the fire at just over 1/2 acre before being contained.
With Red Flag conditions existing at the time, engines and crews from the US Forest Service, Cal Fire, Tahoe Douglas Fire, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and BLM all responded to the Spooner Lake State Park after receiving the call at 3:58 p.m.
Man hit by car while he tried to cross Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 7:26amA man attempting to cross Highway 50 east of Lakeview Avenue sustained non-life threatening injuries after he was hit by a car at 6:53 p.m. Monday.
According to witness statements, the 52-year-old transient tried to cross the road from the lake side of the road, paused in the center lane, then ran across the eastbound lanes. He was struck in the fast lane by a car driven by a 32-year-old man from Stateline. Those witnesses said the pedestrian was possibly under the influence of alcohol when he was hit. He was transported to the hospital.
Lani Anderson 1939 - 2016

She was born in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1939 to Henry Mock of Waipio Valley, Hawaii and Mary Jane Brashier Mock Shirley of Pennsylvania. She had one sister Jane Rowe Ronca who lives in Arizona.

Commercial Floor Space - Doctors Steve Leman and Clint Purvance have applied for Commercial Floor Space allocations (CFA) for three projects at the Y area. Together they are asking for 6,170 square feet of CFA from the City's allotment for a building at 941 Emerald Bay Road. Leman himself is asking for 4,621 square feet at 2215 South Avenue and another 4,025 at 1072 4TH Street. He also wants to purchase another 28,940 Square Feet of 1B Banked Land Coverage from the City.

Owens River Fire sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/19/2016 - 11:31am9/19/16 update 8:00 p.m. - The Owens River Fire has now burned 6,050 acres east of Highway 395 and is now 20 percent contained. The fire is burning southeast of June Lake and northeast of Mammoth Lake.
