Letter: Jeffrey Spencer for Supervisor, District 5

In March 2022, the county group known as Residents for Tahoe conducted interviews with the four candidates vying for El Dorado County Supervisor, District 5. After each candidate left, the panelists discussed and scored the answers to each of the six questions.

As one of the panelists, I have come to the conclusion that the scores don’t lie, and Jeffrey Spencer, with the highest score, is the choice for Supervisor.

The Tahoe Mountain News has also concluded this, for many of the same reasons, and I agree with all of the assertions in the TMN’s endorsement.

Tim Snider & Wolfgang Timber is a six-piece world-folk music group comprised of players from Reno who came together during the Covid lockdown and they will be at the Valhalla Tahoe Boathouse Theater on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. Its first show was in May 2021, a sold-out event at Crystal Bay Casino. Snider is known for performing in his bare feet and drawing his violin bow into curly frays. The rhythm section – bassist Zach Terán and drummer Miguel Jiménez-Cruz – also play Reno contemporary pop group The Novelists, which has played at Valhalla multiple times.

South Tahoe Environmental Education conducts spring programming

This week, volunteer educators from the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) engaged third and fourth graders from four different elementary schools in place-based environmental education. Students were brought to the Tallac Historic site and led around various stations across the site, participating in lessons on local history, watersheds, fire resilience, and trees while interacting with their environment at each station.

South Lake Tahoe Councilman Cody Bass pleads not guilty in court Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cody Bass was arraigned on May 20 in El Dorado County Superior Court on misdemeanor charges stemming from his arrest on September 25, 2021. Bass, a South Lake Tahoe city councilman, was driving his Tesla back into the Tahoe Basin when the California Highway Patrol (CHP) saw his car parked near Twin Bridges at 2:30 a.m. with Bass asleep behind the wheel.

Heavenly Mountain Resort to auction off North Bowl lift chairs for charity

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a rare opportunity coming up to own a retired ski lift chair while also helping the South Lake Tahoe community. Vail's Heavenly Mountain Resort is upgrading the North Bowl lift to a high-speed quad for next season, and the 97 chairs on the old lift are going to be auctioned off.

Own a piece of local ski history in a charity auction of all the retired three-person chairs.

Council votes to sell two parcels that would have been used in relocation of US-50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two lots owned by the South Tahoe Redevelopment Successor Agency will go on the market for affordable housing after City Council voted 3-1 to sell 3900 and 3908 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Mayor Devin Middlebrook was the lone dissent and Councilmember Cristi Creegan was absent.

During its meeting this week, the council moved to get rid of the two lots that would have been used to realign US-50 through the residential Rocky Point neighborhood, commonly known as the Loop Road. They are a total of 1.16 acres and the estimated value is $1,000,000.

Lane reductions on Mt. Rose Highway for NDOT’s Incline Village highway improvements

Drivers will see lane closures and travel delays on upper Mt. Rose Highway (SR-431) through next Friday, May 27 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues enhancements to State Routes 431 and 28 near Incline Village.

· Lane closures with up to 30-minute travel delays are currently in place through May 27 on upper Mt. Rose Highway from the Summit (near Mt. Rose trailhead) through the Tahoe Meadows area for repaving. The lane closures take place, 24-hours-a-day Sundays at 8 pm through noon Fridays.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) is hosting the 10th Annual Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19. The weekend-long event features three key events. For riders, the Corral Trail Bike Demo on Saturday and registered Rides (Tahoe Triple Crown and the Power Loop) Sunday morning are registration-required events. On Sunday at 1:00 p.m. everyone is invited to a free, family-friendly Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival at Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers.

CAL FIRE suspends burn permits in region, including El Dorado, Eastern Sacramento, and North-Eastern San Joaquin counties

With the increasing fire danger due to continued drought and hotter, drier conditions in the region, CAL FIRE will be suspending burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Areas of Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin Counties. This suspension takes effect at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23rd, 2022, and bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris such as branches and leaves.

Vail promotes Tom Fortune to COO of Lake Tahoe resorts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tom Fortune has been promoted to the chief operating officer for Vail Resorts for the Tahoe Region. He will continue to be the vice president/general manager at Heavenly Mountain Resort and the new position will give him oversight at the other two resorts as well - Kirkwood and Northstar.

Fortune is a South Lake Tahoe resident and has been with Vail for 13 years.

"I love being in this community and am extremely passionate about what makes it so special," said Fortune.

Two-alarm fire under a South Lake Tahoe restaurant on Timber Cove Pier quickly extinguished

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Firefighters from several agencies responded to a fire on the Timber Cove pier Thursday, quickly putting out the flames seen underneath the Boathouse restaurant.

The two-alarm fire came in at approximately 11:15 a.m. South Lake Tahoe Police Department was first to arrive and they evacuated the Timber Cove Marina and the restaurant. All on-duty firefighters and chiefs from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded along with assistance from Lake Valley Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire.

The fire was put out right away and there were no injuries reported.

El Dorado County creates video to plead with President Biden to overturn FEMA denial of funds

MEYERS, Calif. - Meek's Lumber held a grand reopening celebration on Wednesday at its Meyers location.

Since 2016, Tahoe Women's Community Fund donates $537,018 to local nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just seven years, the Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has spread out $537,018 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits, with the latest group receiving checks at a celebration Tuesday

TWCF is a collective giving organization created in 2015 in South Lake Tahoe when Wendy David and Kathy Haven sat down to create a group for the community and made up of the community. Today there are 208 members and a board of directors.

STPUD adopts new construction and remodel water and sewer capacity fees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Tahoe Public Utility District adopted new water and sewer capacity charges that go into effect June 7, 2022. These are one-time charges for new development and remodels connecting to the District’s water and sewer system.

Sewer Capacity Charge
The residential sewer capacity charge used to be based on the number of sewer units, which is a combination of the number of kitchens, toilets, and bedrooms. It will now be based on square footage.

CodeFu summer enrichment camps in South Lake Tahoe this summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Looking for summer camps for the kids this year? CodeFu Lake Tahoe is holding coding and exploration camps based at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center in June, July, and August.

Families local to the Lake Tahoe Basin, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Carson City, Minden, and Gardnerville will have first priority. Families visiting Lake Tahoe can plan ahead. Drop-in days are available.

The camp will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Half-day camps are $249 a week, and full-day is $389 a week. Drop-in rates are $89 per day.

STMS and STHS choirs take first place at 2022 Music in the Parks - Great America Festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Choir directors, Miss Allyssa Little, STHS, and Mr. Chris Cromwell, STMS, suspected they had special groups this year based on how their groups conducted themselves through the adversity and challenges that they were presented with throughout the course of this school year.

Those suspicions were confirmed this past weekend, Saturday, May 14, 2022.

Caltrans project on SR28 in Tahoe City and Kings Beach this week could cause delays

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - Motorists should expect delays on State Route 28 in Tahoe City and Kings Beach this week for pavement repairs to the highway.

Caltrans and its contractor, Martin Brothers Construction of Sacramento, will be performing grinding and paving work. Crews are scheduled to start setting up lane closures at 4 p.m. with repairs occurring from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19 under one-way traffic control. Motorists may experience delays of up to 20 minutes.

Two recent fatal crashes in Douglas County - One on US395, another on SR88

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 43-year-old Minden resident died last week after a single-vehicle rollover crash on US-395 in the area of Douglas County Mile Marker 7 in Gardnerville.

Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to reports of the crash at approximately 2:31 a.m. on May 8, 2022.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a blue 2001 Ford Explorer SUV was traveling north on US-395 near Douglas County Mile Marker 7 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed over the centerline and left the roadway
