Good work on the Mosquito Fire which is now 34% contained, 74,748 acres in size
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/18/2022 - 7:46amFire crews made great progress on Saturday and overnight and were able to get a containment line around 34% of the Mosquito Fire. The fire has now burned 74,748 acres.
Colder temperatures, good humidity recovery, and precipitation arrived overnight with the forecasted storm system. Rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day and become heavier this evening and into
Monday. Southwest winds are predicted to become stronger midday with 24-28 mph gusts over the ridges. Higher humidity and temperatures in the 50s are expected for the fire area today.
Free community flu vaccine clinics in El Dorado County

Seasonal influenza vaccine will be administered primarily in flu shot form, but a limited supply of FluMist® will be available for children and adults.

They are also using this next week to promote their CHP Child Passenger Safety technicians who provide child safety seat inspections, education, and hands-on training for parents and caregivers. Free child safety seat inspections are available by appointment at any CHP area office, including South Lake Tahoe and Truckee (see here).
Firefighters to get help from incoming storm; Mosquito Fire at 73,381 acres, 21% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/17/2022 - 6:55pmThe wind on Saturday may have stirred up some smoke over the Mosquito Fire, but officials said it looked worse than it was. When the morning layer of smoke was blown out to the northeast, causing ventilation and the hot areas were fanned. The Mosquito Fire is 73,381 acres and 21% contained.
Even with the winds, crews made good headway with dozer and hand work along the eastern edge of the fire.
"It was an amazing piece of firefighting," said Operations Section Chief Dave Soldavini of the efforts at the southeast end of the fire.

STPUD starts easement project in Washoe State Park

The project will occur on the trail south of Amacker Ranch, between the meadow and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Work is planned for September 26 through October 21, 2022.
Use caution around the work zone and seek alternate trails.

Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe on Saturday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/16/2022 - 7:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Saturday, September 17 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Expect southwest winds from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. As a result, waves should be 2 to 4 feet.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
The three-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe:
Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 68. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

The community served by the LVFPD is notifying the community they serve pursuant to Government Code §1780. The appointee will represent the community served by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District as a Board Director for a 4-year term beginning December 2022 and ending December 2026.

Poor air quality is an issue Friday around Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Reno, and Carson City. Farmer's Market on Ski Run has been canceled, and schools in the Tahoe-Truckee School District are closed due to very unhealthy air.

In order for California to reach its goal of 75 percent source reduction, recycling, and composting, food waste must be addressed. Not only is redirecting organic waste the right, and needed thing to do, there is a law in California requiring local jurisdictions to implement organic waste recycling programs.

In October the Douglas County Board of Commissioners will be meeting to determine the direction Douglas County will take with regards to how VHRs will be addressed within all of our neighborhoods. This is concerning because the board may vote sometime in the future, to expand VHRs into all of the communities in Douglas County, Nevada.

Overnight, smoke settled back into drainages due to easing winds, with a majority of the fire area seeing good humidity recovery. The 5:11 p.m. crash occurred on US-50 at Mile Marker 3, the curve between Marla Bay and Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Mosquito Fire 58,544 acres, 20% contained
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/14/2022 - 7:09amOn Tuesday, stronger southwest winds throughout the Mosquito Fire area cleared the smoke inversion and caused fire behavior to become more active. It is now 58,544 acres in size with the containment line updated at 20%.
At the morning briefing Wednesday, fire officials told the firefighters to expect more of the same fire behavior with the smoke inversion lifting around 1 p.m. There are currently 3,052 people assigned to the fire. They also instructed firefighters to be safe and aware of the residents who have not evacuated and don't want them on their property.

Mosquito Fire: 50,330 acres in size, 25% containment line

Today’s slightly stronger southwest winds aloft broke up the smoke inversion that has been hanging over the Mosquito Fire for the past several days. With the smoke inversion clearing out by midday, the fire activity increased significantly this afternoon due to the increased ventilation and available oxygen to support burning. That activity prompted more mandatory and warning areas of evacuations in both counties.
Tahoe history class to start Sept. 22 at Lake Tahoe Community College

Through the school's Connect program, both budding history buffs and long-time locals will learn all about the history of the Lake Tahoe area. The 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. workshop is held on Tuesdays from Sept. 22 - Nov. 10 except for Oct. 13 and 20.
New evacuation orders for Mosquito Fire in Stumpy Meadows area

The boundaries for the evacuated area are:
East of Stumpy Meadows
West of the Wentworth Springs Road and Ice House Road intersection
South of the County Border
North of Onion Creek
Please evacuate the area using Southbound Ice House Road towards Highway 50. Please use caution as there are firefighters and equipment in the area.

Update: Dutch Fire at 48 acres, 50% contained; I-80 has one westbound lane open
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/13/2022 - 2:42pmWED. 9/14 UPDATE: The Dutch Vegetation Fire along I-80 is 48 acres and 50% contained. I-80 westbound traffic is reduced to one lane. All threats have been mitigated.
INCIDENT UPDATE: The #DutchFire near I-80 and Ridge Road in Dutch Flat is 30 acres and 30% contained. All evacuations have been lifted. Interstate 80 opened to one lane in both directions.
The westbound #2 lane is scheduled to be closed all night. The estimated time to have both lanes of eastbound I80 is 9:30 p.m. tonight.

Constitution Week commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution that took place in Philadelphia in 1787. In 1955, then President Dwight Eisenhower officially recognized Constitution Week. The Constitution is America’s most important document, as it emphasizes all our responsibilities for protecting and defending our great heritage.

Firefighters able to get Mosquito Fire containment line to 18%, 49,761 acres have burned

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce are honoring and celebrating "Unsung Heroes" on Thursday, September 22.
Four residents - Sherry Acri, Laure Tolstad, Bob Harms, and Ted Turner have been chosen for their contributions to the community as they found ways to make life easier for their neighbors during the pandemic. There have always been great volunteers on the South Shore, but over the past two years, the community has been the recipient of thousands of hours of selfless work by volunteers.
Firefighters gain containment line on Mosquito Fire - 16% contained, 48,700 acres
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/12/2022 - 7:41pmFirefighters gained a longer containment line around the Mosquito Fire Monday, and it is now 16% contained. There was slight growth today and the fire is currently mapped at 48,700 acres.
The unified command of the Mosquito Fire held their nightly virtual meeting at 7 p.m. and updated the community on everything from power lines to repopulation.
PG&E has been in the fire area pre-treating power lines with a solution to prevent poles from burning. So far they have treated more than 2000 assets. Just over 500 customers are without power.

Per the Education Code, LTUSD must publicly announce the vacancy for the four-year term that will run from December 2022 to December 11, 2026.
Area 2 is defined in the yellow area in the photo above. Applicants must reside in that area, from Al Tahoe Blvd to Stateline between Pioneer Trail and the lake.
South Lake Tahoe man dies in single-vehicle rollover on Pioneer Trail
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/12/2022 - 12:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 34-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died in a single-car collision on Pioneer Trail Sunday evening.
Just before 7 p.m. on September 11, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a call about a crash near Golden Bear Trail. Upon arrival, they found a 2011 Honda CRV down an embankment with two people in the vehicle.
According to the preliminary CHP report, the driver of the Honda was traveling north when, for unknown reasons, made an unsafe turn, causing the vehicle to traverse into the southbound lane, overturn and end up in a culvert.

The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation is a non-profit charity, founded in 1996, dedicated to supporting the Lake Tahoe Region by partnering with donors who are committed to helping local non-profit organizations create a more prosperous regional community.

Roberta, along with fellow Rotarians Cheryl Cottle, Grace Schorr, and Paul (club president) and Lizzie Thibodeau, proudly represented the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club at their ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’(AAD) on Labor Day.
Over 11,000 people still evacuated from 46,587 acre Mosquito Fire

Despite cooler temperatures, the historically dry fuel moisture in the vegetation continues driving the fire’s growth. On Sunday, the fire made a run to the northeast in the drainage between Foresthill Road and Deadwood Road. Firefighters have been building in-direct control lines and when
necessary utilizing strategic firing operations to stay ahead of the fire on this corner.

LTCC, LTUSD and Douglas County schools at lake closed Monday due to smoke from Mosquito Fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/12/2022 - 7:03amUpdate: Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School are closed due to smoke. Since LTUSD is closed, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe is also closed.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With air quality expected to be in the hazardous range Monday, both Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have canceled classes for the day.
LTCC said they have to address some internal air quality issues.
South Lake Tahoe 9/11 memorial ceremony held at American Legion
