Fires break out in Douglas County as thunderstorm cell passes through

9 p.m. updates: Forward progress on the Lebo Fire was stopped this evening at 6:45 p.m. Units from East Fork Fire returned from the fire as water tenders stayed on the scene to assist units from BLM and USFS with mop-up. The final size is estimated to be 27.5 acres.
Down at the fire near Holbrook Junction, crews were able to knock it down quickly and it never grew much beyond .25 acres. Some crews are staying on the scene for mop-up.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 20 years, between 1856 and 1876, the legendary Snowshoe Thompson delivered mail between Placerville and Genoa (and for a time, Virginia City). He did it by the Norweigan version of snowshoes, looking like very long cross-country skis. It took him three days on this eastward journey, two days back to Placerville, carrying on his back a 60-100 pound package of mail.
The U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor's Center will host an evening with John "Snowshoe" Thompson on Friday, August 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in their Lake of the Sky amphitheater.

Local man spends hours treading water in Lake Tahoe before being rescued

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 19-year-old man was pulled from Lake Tahoe Friday night after spending about three hours treading water before being rescued.
At 8:17 p.m. on Friday, July 29, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was called by the manager of Timber Cove Marina to assist with a water rescue on the lake. Tahoe Douglas Fire boat crews were also called to assist along with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
Herman Marty ~ 1943 - 2022

Herman Marty passed away peacefully on July 25, 2022.
He was born on May 13, 1943, in the tiny mountain village of Alpthal, Switzerland. He emigrated to the United States in 1970 and found his life-long home in South Lake Tahoe until his passing.
As a carpenter, he built many homes in Lake Tahoe, including the one he lived in with his wife and two daughters. He also built homes in Carson City, San Francisco, and Oregon. Those who knew him will always remember his Swiss style of craftsmanship — everything had to be exact. He was the ultimate perfectionist.

Oak Fire at 67% containment, new McKinney Fire over 51,000 acres

UPDATE 7/31: The Oak Fire is holding at Devil’s Gulch due to crews working around the clock in hazardous conditions. There was no growth on the fire today. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are expected to continue. There is a chance of rain and thunderstorms overnight. Damage inspections are nearly complete.
It now measures 19,244 acres and is 67 percent contained.

Stateline casinos "win" down 28.75% in June, Nevada up 8%

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,277,068,155 for the month of June 2022, a gain of 8.06 percent over the same period in 2021. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos didn't fare as well as their "win" was down 28.75 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $22,218,554, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report.
Last month's report showed over $17.5M in gaming revenue on the South Shore and $1.3B for the state of Nevada. The South Shore was down 13.69 percent when compared to the previous year in May.

Marietta (Mary) Couch passed away on December 10th, 2021 after a tough year of losing her eldest son to cancer, and her husband to a series of serious health issues. She was a loving and proud mother who everyone looked up to.

The Muralist Susie Alexander of recently completed an artistic rendering of Lake Tahoe’s underwater habitat in the lounge area of the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center. The exhibit shows shallow habitat, deep water habitat, and living aquatic organisms that you might find in those underwater environments.
“This has been such an inspiring three-plus weeks of painting at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center. I am so inspired to continue painting water. It has become an important topic in the West,” says Alexander.

With higher traffic volume in Reno and the Tahoe Basin, construction on roads around Lake Tahoe will be on hold between Friday, July 29 and Monday, August 8. This is due to Hot August Nights.
Beginning August 8, drivers can expect three work zones, and up to 30-minute delay times. Traffic control supervisors will be monitoring flow and delay times.
All work is weather and temperature permitting, and subject to change.

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, or TERC, has released its annual Tahoe: State of the Lake Report. The report informs nonscientists about important factors affecting the health of Lake Tahoe and provides the scientific underpinnings for restoration and management decisions within the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The report summarizes data collected during 2021 in the context of the long-term record of research at Lake Tahoe. UC Davis researchers have continuously monitored the lake since 1968.
Closure Extended on Carson Road within US-50 Camino Safety Project

CAMINO – Caltrans District 3 and the El Dorado County Department of Transportation are notifying the traveling public that the closure of Carson Road within the ongoing US-50 Camino Safety Project is being extended due to a utility conflict.
Carson Road between Robindale Drive and Carson Court was scheduled to be closed from July 18 to July 29 but now is expected to remain closed for an additional seven days or longer after the discovery of a Comcast cable that was not relocated deep enough. The Comcast cable will need to be lowered as much as 3 feet.

Lisa Maloff passed away Thursday morning at the age of 93. The tributes started flowing within the hour as the news of her passing reached people throughout the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The American Legion Post 795 is accepting resumes for those interested in applying for the position of Managing Bartender. This person will not only serve as the bartender but also book events at the Legion and other duties.
John “Skip” Steve, who has been the Legion’s manager and bartender for more than 14 years, has made the difficult decision to move in a different direction. The members of Post 795 are sad to see Skip leave, but wish him the best in his future, said Post Commander Tom Millham.
Nevada State Lands acquires over 10 acres in Tahoe Basin

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Division of State Lands (NDSL) has acquired 10.6 acres of land located in the upper Kingsbury area to ensure the long-term management and protection of natural habitat for native plant and wildlife species in Lake Tahoe, and to help reduce wildfire risks. This new conservation area was funded by Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) mitigation funds.

Oak Fire at 18,824 acres and 36% contained

The Oak Fire has been burning east of the town of Midpines since Friday, July 22. To date, 18,824 acres have burned and firefighters have been able to put a containment line around 36 percent of the time. Most of this line is on the southwestern end of the fire where most of the populated areas are located.

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is holding the 18th annual Day in Paradise on Saturday, August 6 from noon to 7 p.m. at Tahoe Paradise Park.
Admission is free and there will be free kids' games, a car show, food trucks, live music, a beer garden, a silent auction, and the famous Duck Races.

The El Dorado National Forest Interpretive Association is offering two upcoming hikes for the public to enjoy, both free of charge.
On July 29, there is an interpretive hike, “The Geology of Carson Pass,” starting at 10:30 a.m., and will start at the Carson Pass Information Station on California Hwy 88. Learn about the amazing geological formations around the area. These hikes are designed for people who can hike a couple of miles and appreciate the rocks as much as the flowers. Cable Fire at 20 acres, 100% contained

UPDATE 7 p.m. 7/28; The Cable fire is 100 percent contained and remains at 20 acres in size. The fire will remain in patrol status for several more days to ensure no new smokes develop within the perimeter of the fire.
UPDATE 9 a.m. 7/28: Firefighters continue to gain ground on containment of the Cable fire which is now 90 percent contained. Crews are patrolling for hot spots and smoke within the fire perimeter and improving control lines. There are 28 people, and 2 engines assigned to the fire which is 20 acres in size.
The human-caused fire is under investigation.

Recent power outages in South Lake Tahoe explained

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In recent weeks, four power outages in the South Lake Tahoe area have affected the same neighborhoods as shown in the photo above.
Underground electrical infrastructure issues caused all but one of these outages, according to Liberty Utilities. The other was a line going into fire mode. While these incidents were unrelated, they impacted the same circuit and therefore the same customers.
5th annual Tahoe Brewfest moves to heart of South Lake Tahoe on August 27

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has moved its 5th annual Tahoe Brewfest to the heart of South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, August 27 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Ski Run Boulevard will be closed for the event as people celebrate the mountain culture, beer, and community.
Due to contract and permitting challenges the venue moved to Ski Run which offers easy access for walking or biking to the event from anywhere in town, and with over 30 beers to sample, you won’t want to be driving.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - SR28 is reopened after being closed Tuesday morning following a fatal collision in the westbound lane in Tahoe City.
Firefighters gain on Oak Fire - now 26% contained, 18,532 acres in size

UPDATE 9PM 7/26: The Oak Fire continues to be 26 percent contained and grew a bit today to 18,532 acres. Although good progress continues on the fire, there is much work to be done, according to CalFIRE. An infrared flight over the fire showed minimal heat in Lushmeadows and surrounding communities. Crews have been able to hold and improve the fire line in the Mariposa Pines area. More evacuation orders were reduced to fire advisement early this afternoon.

North Lake Tahoe Tourism Business Improvement District awards over $90,000 in grants

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Lake Tahoe’s new TBID Advisory and Zone 1 Committees, comprised of local business owners and representatives, have recommended the first three local projects to receive funding from the business community’s self-assessed Tourism Business Improvement District revenues. Mural and downtown lighting projects in Kings Beach and Tahoe City were recommended by the committees in support of the region’s stewardship education efforts and to support local businesses by adding to the evening ambiance and creating a welcoming sense of place in the downtown areas.
