Lake Tahoe Community College mourns the loss of beloved faculty member Dr. Clinton Culp

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) faculty, staff, and students are mourning the passing of Wilderness Education and Outdoor Leadership director and faculty lead Dr. Clinton Culp.
He experienced a non-trauma medical emergency on Friday, January 27 while leading an avalanche instructor training class near Luther Pass. Despite the best life-saving efforts of the staff and students in the field, some of whom are medical professionals, and the emergency professionals who arrived at the scene to assist, Dr. Culp passed away. He was just 56 years old.

Tahoe Interagency Bear Team to teach people how to live responsibly with bears

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - A joint effort between the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has created an innovative program called BearWise. This aims to help people live more responsibly with bears with guidance from several Lake Tahoe agencies.
This has long been the focus of wildlife advocates around the lake, and BearWise is meant to provide the same consistent messaging regarding bears and how to manage human-bear conflict across state lines and through all Tahoe agencies.

If you have never experienced snowshoeing, this is your chance. If you can walk, you can snowshoe - you don't have to race, just have FUN! Sign up by Feb. 23 to save $10 off the race day registration fee, and be sure to reserve a pair of snowshoes if you need them or bring your own. First-time walkers are encouraged to participate.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, giving the El Dorado County Public Health Division’s Oral Health Program a focus this month on reminding children and parents that good oral health starts early and includes healthy choices.
“While going to the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings is always important for children, paying attention to things such as the drinks they consume can also make a huge difference for good oral health,” said Andrea Lindner Jones, health educator with the Oral Health Program.

RENO, Nev. — The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking input in the selection of a logo to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Members of the community can select their favorite logo online starting today, Jan. 30, through Monday, Feb. 6.
On October 12, 1874, the University opened its doors to seven students in Elko, Nevada, marking the humble beginnings of Nevada’s original land grant university. The University will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Oct. 12, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One will have to travel far distances to find someplace warm this week as the Lake Tahoe Basin will see some of the coldest air in some time. Bitter cold temperatures are expected for Monday and Tuesday around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada, with some locations expected to see their coldest low temperatures in the last five to ten years, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Local skier Kyle Smaine killed in avalanche in Japan

South Lake Tahoe professional skier Kyle Smaine died Sunday after being overtaken by an avalanche in Japan, according to the Mountain Gazette. The 31-year-old had been skiing while on a marketing trip for Ikon Pass and Nagano Tourism when the avalanche occurred Sunday afternoon, Japan local time, the Mountain Gazette said.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High (STHS) Dance Team took top honors on Saturday at the Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno.
The team won first place in the Jazz Dance Category.
Leading the STHS team are coaches Kylee Finnegan, Ashley Smith, Izzy Preston, Bri Alamilla, and choreographer Ashley Smith.
It was a lot of hard work to take the top spot including weeks of 7 a.m. practices, said Coach Kylee.
Man who had been living in van found deceased inside in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) found a man in his 40s deceased in his van on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
A relative of the unidentified man called SLTPD, telling them he hadn't heard from the relative since before Christmas Day. The caller said the missing man had been living in his van, and they gave SLTPD areas where he was known to park.

Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy's Nordic Program Director Will Sweetser has been selected to serve as a coach for the U.S. Ski Team at the FIS World Junior/U23 Championships in Whistler, British Columbia.
The top 5 ranked U23 men and women, and the top 6 ranked U20 men and women are selected from a combination of FIS World Cup results, FIS points, and the U.S. National Championships. SBSTA Club Nordic athlete J.C. Schoonmaker of Tahoe City automatically qualified from his World Cup results as a member of the U.S. Ski Team.

A quick-moving slider-type winter system is expected to impact the Sierra and western Nevada on Sunday into Sunday night, bringing gusty ridge winds and light snowfall accumulations. On its tail will be some bitterly cold temperatures.

Placer County supervisors approves almost $4.5M for eight Tahoe projects

The Placer County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved $4,493,818 for eight capital improvement projects during its January 24 meeting. The Capital Advisory Project Committee (CAP) recommended the projects that will be funded by Tourism Occupancy Tax (TOT) funds.
During this year’s grant cycle, the CAP Committee received 13 project requests totaling $8.1 million. The committee determined three applications did not meet funding criteria and two other projects were supported by the committee but were encouraged to seek other identified funding sources.

The Eastern Sierra History Series continues o Sunday, January 29 when the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley hosts "Snowshoe Thompson-Mailman of the Sierra" at 1 p.m.
The Chautauqua-style presentation will be on Thompson who carried the mail across the Sierra Nevada mountains during winter snows for 20 years. He would travel over the 180-mile round trip in just five days on his hand-crafted snow skates (skis) with nothing more than a jacket, dried meat, matches, and his 80 lbs. of mail.

Prevent snow-related gas leaks

The Sierra received remarkable snowfall in a short period of time, leading to a spike in propane-related calls to local fire agencies. This is not uncommon after early, heavy, and wet snowfall events and North Tahoe Fire shares information on ways locals can prevent snow-related gas leaks.
The series of storms in recent weeks resulted in heavy snow loading on propane tanks and plumbing systems.

The Tahoe Arts Project is bringing the Puppet Art Theater to South Lake Tahoe in February. Under the artistic direction of Art Grueneberger, the theater company tours theaters, festivals, and public events all over California.
With a keen sense of humor and a flair for drama, Grueneberger is a master at developing marvelous puppet shows that delight audiences of all ages.
The public performance will be the Three Little Pigs on February 10 at 6 p.m. in Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theater. It is free entry but donations are accepted.
Caltrans hopes to have SR89 around Emerald Bay open on Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - State Route 89 remains closed around Emerald Bay as crews work to remove vast amounts of snow from the roadway. Caltrans said its South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew began the arduous task of clearing the snow with blowers, graders, and plows. They said crews encountered slides at multiple locations, one as high as 50 feet and 300 feet long, and six others between 25 and 30 feet tall.
The department is targeting Friday to reopen the highway.

Tree Ring Project unveiled in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first of six history tree rings was unveiled at South Lake Tahoe City Hall on Tuesday. The tree was estimated to be alive from 1844 to 2017, so dates important in the history of the area are identified on the rings of the tree. It is hanging on the wall in the lobby of the Lake Tahoe Airport for all to experience.
The Tree Ring Project is a joint effort between the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Kenny Curtzwiler from K&K Services, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, and the City of South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE and TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is expanding its “Pet Pantry” program, which helps owners keep their pets despite financial hardships or other barriers. HSTT launched the program during the recession of 2010, offering Truckee residents free pet food and supplies to maintain their pet’s care. When the South Lake Tahoe office opened in 2019, the agency expanded the program to that area.
Now, every Lake Tahoe resident is eligible.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite Mother Nature bringing an additional foot of fresh snow to the Lake Tahoe area on Monday, January 16, Bread & Broth still served a hot meal to the 41 dinner guests who braved the cold and the snowy roads. Due to the road conditions and blocked driveways, only a few cooks could get to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall, so hot pizza from Pizza Hut, a green salad, and broccoli were served in lieu of the planned menu.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - American Legion Post 795'recently made a food donation to the South Tahoe High School Food Pantry.
In the photo above, American Legion Post 795 Auxiliary Secretary Sandy McKnight and Rob Canny of South Tahoe High School and part-time bartender at Post 795, joined forces this past fall.
Rob had informed the Auxiliary of food-insecure students at the high school. Since then, four carloads of food have been gathered by the Auxiliary and delivered by Rob for STHS. The Auxiliary also supports the Food Pantry at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Prescribed fire operations scheduled to resume this week at Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) members may continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe as conditions and weather allow. The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Incline Village and the USDA Forest Service may continue operations near Baldwin Beach. Smoke will be present. Two planned burn areas this week:
1. LTBMU Admin Pile, USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, North of Taylor Creek, and South of Baldwin Beach Road

Mini Royal Treatment for area princesses to raise funds for Lake Tahoe Shining Stars

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Rah Beauty Bar located in Edgewood Tahoe, is throwing an event for the little princesses of the community. On Friday, February 10, 2023, princesses from ages 3 to 12 are invited to get the royal treatment. The little ones will also meet the real-life princesses from Ever After Productions. (Another event for pre-teens and teens will be coming soon)
City of South Lake Tahoe seeks one-year franchise agreement with Liberty Utilities

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe wants to explore options for who will provide electric utility services to the community, including the feasibility of municipalization of electrical generation distribution.
During its January 10 meeting, the City Council rejected Liberty Utilities' request for a 25-year franchise agreement, and instead offered one-year as staff examines all possibilities for services in a first reading. At its January 24 meeting, the Council has the approval of the one-year plan on the consent agenda.
Dr. Helen Henry Smith honored with Golden Bear Award for pioneering efforts in preserving Vikingsholm Castle

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra State Parks Foundation invites Californians to recognize and celebrate Dr. Helen Henry Smith for her pioneering efforts that saved and preserve Vikingsholm Castle located at Emerald Bay State Park at Lake Tahoe. Dr. Smith was awarded the Golden Bear Award, an annually presented award by the California State Parks and Recreation Commission, highlighting individuals who demonstrate leadership and make significant contributions to the Parks mission.
