A Tahoe City resident and business owner has pleaded guilty to a charge of smuggling goods into the United States. Andrew Laughlin, 47, acted as a middleman in an international amphibian smuggling ring and will be sentenced on Oct. 7, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Tahoe Youth and Family Services (TYFS) cordially invites the community, former board members, staff members, and clients to join them in commemorating 50 years of unwavering support for runaway and homeless youth in South Lake Tahoe. Originally known as Awakening Peace, TYFS was established as one of the 50 national pilot programs under the Federal Runaway and Homeless Youth Legislation Act of 1974. LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Cold Water Shock is something every person going to Lake Tahoe to swim or boat should know, and understand. Each year there are people who die in Lake Tahoe because of Cold Water Shock so we are republishing this story from 2016 with some updates, one of many stories we've carried about this very important topic over the years.

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that school is out, the 2024 St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will begin on June 26 and continue every Wednesday through August 21. This is a wonderful opportunity for all Lake Tahoe South Shore children.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new ordinance is now in place in South Lake Tahoe that establishes a progressive hazardous vegetation and combustible
material abatement program in the city limits. With several fires already burning in California, 2024 could be a big fire year, and maintaining defensible space around homes and businesses could be key to staying free of fire in the community.

Bread & Broth always welcomes new, first-time Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsors to participate in our Monday Meal dinners. Although Nichols Consulting Engineers (NCE) has been a long-time donor to Bread & Broth’s mission of easing hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, their AAD sponsorship on Monday, June 17 was their first experience participating in a Monday Meal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A high-pressure area continues to affect Nevada, the Sierra, and northeast California. Sunny skies and hot temperatures prevail though there is a 10%-15% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mostly south of Tahoe. Overnight lows will drop into a more normal range of 40 degrees mid-week. Winds will pick up in intensity on Wednesday and Thursday - they will be from the west on Wednesday, but then veer to the northwest. The dry weather and stronger winds bring near-critical fire weather conditions in the region.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Commissioners approved a special use permit for a Beer Garden at Zephyr Cove Resort over the 4th of July weekend. There has been a lot of concern about the event after the 2023 party at the adjacent Zephyr Shoals that left behind 8,000 pounds of trash, and videos of a massive party scene with drinking, including underage drinking.

Aramark, the operator of the resort, was given a new 20-year concessionaire permit in November, and a difference in the new permit was the operation of Zephyr Shoals, something not included in the past.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of traffic-interfering work continuing on State Route 28 (SR-8) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

One-way traffic control is scheduled between Ridgewood Road and Jeffrey Lane from Sunday, June 23 at 7 p.m. until Friday, June 28 at noon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road rehabilitation projects for the City of South Lake Tahoe are underway. Paving will begin on Monday, June 24, starting on Sherman Way. It will then proceed down to Keller and Saddle roads.

Upcoming work will also be done on 10th St. The City will provide updates during the paving season to keep the public informed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are having a Community Plant Sale after a hiatus of a few years. While this event may be a bit smaller than those of past years, a selection of 25 ornamental species of both native and adaptive plants will be available including Blue Flax, Elderberry, Mock Orange, Twinberry, and Western Spiraea. These plants will flourish in the Tahoe Basin’s high-elevation environment.

CoWork Tahoe has graciously given their parking lot for the event.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - last month, The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a formal application from Homewood Mountain Resort for amendments to the resort master plan approved by TRPA in 2011. The agency is currently reviewing the application and supporting documents to determine if the application is complete.

As part of the review process, planners will draft a timeline for TRPA review including a schedule of public input opportunities.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced an additional $3.4 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to prevent and combat the spread of aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe. The funds come from the President’s Investing in America agenda to support existing cooperative agreements with The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) to prevent and combat the spread of aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe.
