Mitchell Duane Jones passed away on January 26, 2024, following a period of declining health. Mitch was a graduate of Armijo High School in Fairfield, CA, and UC Berkeley, where he was very active in the marching band.

After graduating from college, Mitch became the band director at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Calif. where the band had the honor of marching in the 1980 Tournament of Roses Parade under his direction.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An active weather pattern continues overnight and tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Snow showers are expected to return overnight for some areas above 5000 feet. Accumulations will be lighter, but some valley locations could
receive a few inches. Lingering snow is expected afterward until the next system swings by on Thursday and Friday. No significant impacts are expected at the moment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Fannan Fellowship, a scholarship initiative led by Sean Fannan, a South Tahoe High graduate, is now accepting applications from all South Tahoe High School seniors. Driven by a commitment to paying it forward and providing support for students to achieve their goals, this fellowship provides scholarships and seeks to create a support system fostering a strong sense of community among past and present awardees.

Eligibility and Awards

Jimmy was born January 18, 1945 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Nick and Theresa Reszetylo. The oldest of six children he graduated from Aliquippa High School in Aliquippa, PA. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Minot, North Dakota where it was so cold he volunteered to go to Vietnam in 1966. Upon honorable discharge, he moved to San Diego and worked for Beneficial Finance then on to Ventura County where he won highest producer awards at Winfield Title Co.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Even with school closures due to snow, the Douglas County School District will still hold its candidate meet and greet for the two finalists for school superintendent.

On Monday, February 5 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., two finalists, Dennis Holmes and John Ramirez Jr., will be in the Douglas High School Commons to meet the public, and answer questions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) and South Tahoe High School (STHS) service organization, the ‘S’ Club, joined together to host Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on February 2.

To provide the opportunity for members of the STHS “S” Club to experience the benefits of volunteering, SISLT financially sponsored the Adopt A Day of Nourishment and invited the “S” club to send an Adopt A Day (AAD) crew to help at the evening’s dinner event.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Meyers Elementary School is now taking names for its 24/25 kindergarten classes. Students' date of birth must be on or before September 1, 2019 to be able to attend this next school year. For those born after that date, see below for TK classes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is hosting an art show at the Lake Tahoe Airport from February 16 to February 19.

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, a select number of club members’ artwork is chosen to be in the show. The art is separated into four age groups: 6 to 9 years old, 10 to 12 years old, 13 to 15 years old, and 16 to 18 years old. Their work is in the four art categories of drawing, painting, sculpture, and pastels, with up to 16 art pieces on display - one for each age in each category.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Due to severe winter weather and hazardous driving conditions, Douglas County Manager Jenifer Davidson has authorized the closure of County offices on Monday, February 5.

Sheriff Dan Coverley advises motorists to avoid nonessential travel during hazardous driving conditions. County officials are monitoring the situation and will reopen offices when safe to do so.

Aside from essential public safety, corrections, courts, and elections personnel, County offices will close for the day.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - "You bet on us, so we placed a bet for you," said the favors at the September 2023 wedding of locals Matt and Jessica Grime at the 4H Camp in Stateline.

What was that bet you ask?

The Grimes purchased 180 $2 tickets at the Harveys Lake Tahoe sportsbook for the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl. They made the bets on June 7, so each $2 bet would pay out $17 extra, for a total of $19, with the +850 money line it came with should the 49ers win on Sunday.

District Attorneys from El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada counties joined Representative Kevin Kiley last week to discuss the initiative to increase drug and property crime penalties and allow a new class of crime called treatment-mandated felonies. Many are trying to get the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act on the ballot in November, and still need about 200,000 signatures to get it there.

The Sacramento chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar International (WTS) bestowed its 2023 Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership Award to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Transportation Equity Study. Sacramento WTS leaders presented the award to TRPA staff at the annual awards and scholarship event on January 31 in Sacramento, Calif.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — South Lake Tahoe’s first indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, also known as Tipsy Putt, will be teaming up with the Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) to give back to South Lake Tahoe’s community.

Each Sunday in February from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Shops at Heavenly Village Easter Egg Hunt returns on Sunday, March 31 at 10 a.m. Tickets for this anticipated family event are now on sale, and they are expected to sell out. Tickets are just $5 for this event filled with fun, excitement, and surprises for all ages.

The 5th annual extravaganza is presented by Trans Sierra Investments and The Shops at Heavenly Village. The events during the egg hunt include:

Representative Kevin Kiley, California's 3rd District, will be in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, February 8 for Military Service Academy Night. Learn more about the five service academies starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room adjacent to the library.

The five academies are the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, and the United States Air Force Academy.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning to be in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday. Heavy snow is expected in the greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County.

Snow accumulations 3 to 5 feet above 7000 feet along the Sierra crest. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet below 7000 feet, except 1 to 4 inches for areas below 5500 feet in Mono County.

On February 1, the Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust announced that Rob Katz, Vail Resorts executive chairperson, and his wife, Elana Amsterdam, New York Times bestselling author and founder of Elana's Pantry, have made significant contributions totaling more than $2.66 million to support mental and behavioral health programs in 12 mountain communities, including 10 where Vail Resorts operates.
