Local students honored by DAR Chapter

On Thursday evening, November 21, members of Lake Tahoe Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and guests gathered to honor two local high school students with the prestigious DAR Good Citizen Award.

This award has been presented to deserving high school students since 1934. However, the award has never been presented in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin because, until February 2019, there was no DAR chapter in the area.

The DAR Good Citizen Award is presented to just one student in a high school senior class who demonstrates outstanding qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The school’s administration and faculty choose the student and work with the local DAR chapter to make the award presentation possible.

The 2019-2020 DAR Good Citizens are Julian Bunn, representing Mt. Tallac High School, and Serena Palaroan, representing South Tahoe High School. Each student received a certificate from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a DAR Good Citizen pin and wallet card and a monetary prize. They will each be honored next spring during their respective school awards events.

The DAR Good Citizen Award has lifelong benefits. Schools of higher education and employers recognize the good character exemplified by this award and will often consider it in their application processes.
