SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new company has launched to meet the community needs of COVID-19 testing with workplace testing and overnight results. Test Well today announced the launch of its purpose-built lab in South Lake Tahoe that will not only lower the cost but provides increased accuracy of test results.

The Test Well team, composed of industry experts and local personnel, will prioritize the testing of frontline and essential workers at scale. Starting Monday, December 21, 2020, Lake Tahoe area employers will have access to quick and affordable testing for their employees.

Gov. Steve Sisolak is asking Nevadans to voluntarily stay home for the next two weeks as COVID-19 cases spike statewide, warning that if the data doesn’t improve over that period he will be forced to take more drastic action.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will receive significant funding in the first round of awards for Project Homekey. The funds awarded will support the local community to purchase and rehabilitate housing, including hotels, motels, vacant apartment buildings, and other properties, and convert them into permanent, long-term housing for people facing homelessness and those currently in insufficient short-term housing. We strongly support the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless and their Project Homekey plans.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has announced a new program that seeks to preserve existing housing stock for permanently affordable, full-time homes for Tahoe Basin employees and residents. It is called the TAHOE (Tahoe Affordable Home Ownership Enabling) program.

TAHOE has been created to do three things:

1. Provide assistance to income-qualified households searching for a home in the Tahoe Basin;
2. Enable SJCLT to purchase available homes to be made available to income-qualified Tahoe Basin employees or full-time residents;

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak has unveiled his plan for the state to reopen under phase one starting May 9, 2020. Outdoor malls, restaurants, hair salons, and barber shops are among those able to reopen with new standards for safety.

"We must stay safe so we can stay open," said Sisolak of the ability to move into phase 2 by the end of May, or sooner.

"The beginning of the reopening of our economy is not the end of the coronavirus," said Sisolak during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "It's still with us, as strong as ever. It will not go away until there's a vaccine."

New laws will be going into effect in California in the new year, putting into place California legislature action during 2019. There are many changes including road safety and distracted driving penalties, roadkill rules, minimum wage, independent workers and rent caps.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is highlighting several new laws passed this year:

On Thursday evening, November 21, members of Lake Tahoe Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and guests gathered to honor two local high school students with the prestigious DAR Good Citizen Award.

This award has been presented to deserving high school students since 1934. However, the award has never been presented in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin because, until February 2019, there was no DAR chapter in the area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Five Guys Burgers and Fries opened their South Lake Tahoe location last week in the Bijou Marketplace at the corner of Lake Tahoe and Ski Run Boulevards. The restaurant, which now officially serves beer and wine, opened Monday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m.

This is the 57th Five Guys location to be owned and managed by Encore Restaurants, LLC, all of which are located throughout the states of California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Massachusetts.

The Tri-County Job Fair is an annual event that serves the workforce needs of El Dorado, Sacramento and Placer counties, and connects job seekers with both small and large businesses from multiple industries that are actively recruiting employees.

This year it will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at @the Grounds (formerly known as the Placer County Fairgrounds) located at 800 All American City Boulevard in Roseville.

While many local groups have joined forces to develop housing for residents, the reality is that it takes time to build new housing. And time is what many of our local employers don't have right now as we head into summer. Faced with an immediate need to house their employees, employers have created their own solutions.

University of San Diego student Hirshal Sukha of South Lake Tahoe recently participated in the USD Career Development Center's signature Torero Trek program. Torero Treks are opportunities for USD undergraduate students to engage in career exploration by visiting leading companies across the nation.

Sukha is majoring in Finance and plans to graduate in 2020. He graduated from South Tahoe High in 2016.

The LA Sports Torero Trek on March 22 gave the students the opportunity to network with employers and a few Torero alumni at the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) will hold its annual pre-Thanksgiving Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. in Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Dinner will be served from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the hall is open for dining and socializing until 8:00 p.m.

The public is invited as the board and staff of SJCLT give thanks to members and supporters for another successful year serving the community. The Knights of Columbus are the chefs and will be serving the complimentary dinner.

Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every state, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the 10th leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are on the rise (behind diseases of the heart and Cerebrovascular diseases).

If you are a parent looking for child care, you have probably encountered some challenges. There is currently a shortage of child care slots in El Dorado County. Many child care facilities who offer care are full and have waiting lists. This situation is very frustrating for parents and their employers. In order to work, parents are forced to juggle child care between friends, neighbors, and family members which can often be inconsistent and unreliable. Parents may also be forced to consider a child care situation of questionable quality.

For the third year, Mt. Tallac High School started off their school year with a community "meet and greet," bringing their students and community members together.

Students greeted their guests with a handshake and a warm hello, something Principal Holly Greenough hopes gives her students a good introduction to community leaders who could possibly be their future employers.

A new federal law goes into effect on December 1 that entitles salaried employees to get overtime pay if they make less than $47,476 per year. To help people understand this change they are holding a lunchtime workshop on Wednesday, November 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Tahoe Mountain Lab.

According to the White House, an estimated 4.2 million white collar workers will become entitled to overtime pay when they work extra hours as a result of the new rule, and wages for workers will increase by $12 billion over the next 10 years.

The South Lake Tahoe chapter of the Citizen's Climate Lobby recently asked all ten of the candidates their views on climate change, green buildings and our carbon footprint and how they can make a change if elected.

The Citizen's Climate Lobby is an organization focused on national policies to address climate change, and the South Lake Tahoe chapter is one of 354 in the United States and abroad.

Patricia Sussman of the local chapter said just five of the candidates responded to their questions.

The doors opened at all seven schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Monday, welcoming students back after their summer vacations.

At Tahoe Valley Elementary, not only were the doors opened, but the red carpet was rolled out, literally. Staff and members of the California Highway Patrol greeted students as they entered the school with fanfare and balloon in celebration of their return.

Not only did the students enjoy the processional, but parents, staff and officers did as well.

Principal Holy Greenough would like you to talk to the students about interview skills, employment expectations and the job market. They prefer to schedule speakers on Fridays between 10:25 a.m. and 10:55 a.m.
