The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is holding a community Child Fingerprinting ID event at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe on February 16 and 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Nationally, large numbers of children run away or are abducted each year. Local law enforcement officers have indicated that having a record of fingerprints can be helpful in an effort to safely return the children to their homes.
During the screening process members from Kiwanis will weigh and measure each child, recording age, hair and eye color. Using a non-inking pad, a complete set of fingerprints is made and a frontal and profile photograph is taken. This data is entered into a computer program and a printout is given to each child or parent to retain. The whole procedure of screening and providing a record for each child to take home is a simple process.
This information is NOT kept by the Kiwanis nor shared with any other agency. The computer data is NOT saved.
In the event of a law enforcement investigation, the parent is able to provide this information to help identify their child. Parents are also given a small paper envelope and encouraged to place a sample of the child’s hair inside for DNA matching. While it is true the child’s height, weight, and appearance will change with time, the fingerprints remain the same throughout a lifetime.
Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is pleased to offer this program for the children of the community. They would like to thank the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe for providing a site for the community-wide screening:
