Too Early to Tell Success of New Trash Pick Up Times in South Lake Tahoe

Since March 3rd, trash pick up times in South Lake Tahoe have been moved to two hours later in an effort to reduce wildlife problems and clean up, according to South Tahoe Refuse, protect our unique environment.

While it's too early to tell if the later times will keep bears out of local trash, both Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and the Bear League say they feel it will make a big difference.

"We don't usually get many calls this time of year," said Ann Bryant, Executive Director of the Bear League. "Bears are just now waking up so the effect of the change of garbage pick up times will be more obvious in the summer and when more tourists are in town."

Cheryl Millham, Executive Director of Lake Tahoe Wildlife, also said its really too early to tell but expects a huge difference in bears and wildlife getting into trash.

Residential garbage pick up times now start at 7 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. while commercial garbage pick up times remained the same.

Editor's Note: I notice that many residents are still placing their trash cans out the night before. Hopefully everyone will catch on that this is no longer necessary. My trash used to be picked up at 5:15 a.m. and I love the 7:15 a.m. pick up times.
