As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. Many of the Christmas Trees in homes have now been there for a week or two, and precautions can be taken to prevent a fire that would ruin the holidays.

Tahoe Chamber announces finalists for 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards

Two transported to hospital after trash truck overturns in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two male employees of South Tahoe Refuse (STR) were transported to Barton Hospital Thursday after the trash truck they were in turned over.

At 10:36 a.m. October 15, the trash truck was heading south on Pioneer Trail when its driver attempted to make a right-hand turn onto Elks Club Drive. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the driver was using excessive speed when he tried to make the tight turn, and the fully loaded truck turned over onto its left side on Elks Club.

City Council candidates respond to 100% Renewable Energy Committee questions

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to: 1) Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032 and 2) Reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040, and reduce municipal emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

South Tahoe Recycling Center reopens with new COVID-19 protocols

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After being closed for much of the pandemic, the South Tahoe Recycling Center is going to try reopening once again.

South Tahoe Refuse, operators of the recycling center, say they are determined to keep it open by making sure those using the facility are doing so safely.

The new procedures:

1. Appointments only. No appointments will be made onsite. Call 530.542.8344 to schedule.
2. Masks are required at all times.
3. If you are sick, or have been sick, wait to recycle. If you are sick, so are your recyclables.

Official groundbreaking of Soroptimist Stadium - Home of Girls' Softball

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For years the members of Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) have planned for a major legacy project for the community. The club has saved a portion of its fundraising proceeds for over a decade while searching for a major project which suits its mission to empower women and youth. The result of that search broke ground Wednesday - the renovation of the softball field at the South Tahoe Middle School. The socially distant ceremony was held with club members and partners in their endeavor.

Hazmat situation at South Tahoe Refuse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Refuse Transfer Station at 2140 Ruth Avenue is currently closed due to a hazmat (hazardous materials) situation. South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Rescue are currently at the scene and Hazmat crew is on their way from Placerville.

If anyone is waiting for a dump truck to come to their home there is a delay. Trucks were able to get to many homes but if they are full they are unable to empty their load at the station and return to neighborhoods.

Jeanette Tillman of South Tahoe Refuse said a couple of employees were transferred to the hospital.

96th birthday celebration for WWII tail gunner in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In September, Danny Francisco was able to fly in a a B-17, 75 years after his last flight, and now today, June 5, the community can honor and celebrate him on this 96th birthday.

Everyone is invited to "attend" his party by driving by with a cheer, a wave, an American flag, or any other birthday greeting. He will be at 2216 Dunlap Street in South Lake Tahoe from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the public can join in a drive-by celebration of this WWII vet. The home is located a block from South Tahoe refuse.

Celebrate Earth Day by picking up trash in your neighborhood

Wednesday is Earth Day, the 50th anniversary of a day celebrated around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

With the cancelation of the annual local Earth Day celebration organizers have created Earth Week, with daily activities and lessons everyone can do to celebrate the earth.

Wednesday's focus is "Waste Not."

Important service update from South Tahoe Refuse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Refuse is continuing to provide essential health and safety services to the community with regular trash pickup and they are notifying customers of some changes they have implemented to minimize the spread of coronavirus and protect their employees.

Effective immediately:

Garbage collectors will not pick up any loose garbage. All trash must be contained in bags within trash cans and secured with a lid, or in a secured dumpster.

Tahoe Chamber 2020 Business Expo - Canceled

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The annual Tahoe Chamber Business EXPO will be held on Friday, May 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe. It was originally scheduled for March 27 but postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

Day of the Young Child to be held in South Lake Tahoe -Canceled

CANCELED - SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Choices for Children is once again hosting "Day of the Young Child" on Saturday, March 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

There will be booths, kids' activities, games and child information provided by several groups. Other sponsors for the fun-filled day are First 5, Kiwanis, South Tahoe Refuse, and EDCOE.

Free lunch will be served to children.

The Recreation Center is located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The sustainable message behind SnowGlobe Music Festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many know the annual winter SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe as a gathering of electronic music fans in the cold outdoors, but they may not know about the behind the scenes efforts to make the event sustainable and to ensure they leave no trace behind where it comes to products used and trash.

To help them in these efforts, Waste Free Earth is on board to create an environment of sustainability through strict guidelines for vendors and sponsors, recycling waste bins throughout the event, and daily trash pickup and sorting.

Erasing your carbon footprint, from baby steps to leaps and bounds

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Millions around the world participated in the Global Climate Strike this past September, trying to make their voices heard as they called for action.

A reported 7.6 million people took to the streets, the biggest climate mobilization in history. From small villages to big cities, people spoke, walked, joined hands and used their voices in defense of the climate and an end to reliance on fossil fuels.

Ameca and South Lake Tahoe connected by more than Sister City distinction

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A reception was held prior to Tuesday's City Council meeting, welcoming the contingent from the City of Ameca, Jalisco, Mexico prior to the signing of the official Sister City agreement between South Lake Tahoe and Ameca.

A large crowd was on hand to enjoy food, music and watch the exchanging of gifts between the cities.

The South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth Organization would like to thank the following community members and businesses who so graciously helped our THREE Nevada State Championship Teams (13-year olds, 14-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds) compete at the Regional Tournament for the Pacific Southwest with their donations! Over 40 local youth benefited from this generosity by getting to play at the “next” level (one step away from the World Series)! The Juvenile Service Council (JSC) of El Dorado County is a 501c3 all-volunteer organization serving at-risk youth ages 14-18 who are involved in the Juvenile Justice system. Often these young people are some of our community’s most vulnerable and underserved. They are at a time in their lives when they need our “village” to be there for them without judgment, with kindness and compassion, and with the resources to be able to provide them the tools to be able to forge the future successfully.

Today, 402 people volunteered along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe to protect this national treasure. As part of a lakewide cleanup organized by the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue), participants removed 1240.25 pounds of litter that would have harmed the Lake’s ecology.

Airport Way renamed "Lisa Maloff Way" in honor of her numerous contributions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of Mrs. Lisa Maloff's numerous contributions to our community, today the South Lake Tahoe City Council officially renamed a street after her, and issued a proclamation.

In this proclamation, the City extended to Lisa and Robert "Bob" Maloff their appreciation and gratitude for the numerous donations made to the local community. Her philanthropic donations have forever changed the community and her donations

Keep Tahoe Blue Earth Day volunteers gather 750 pounds of trash and 6000 cigarette butts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 60 people volunteered at the 5th annual South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Cleanup on Monday, April 23. They removed 750 pounds of trash which equals to 1,047 gallons of littler, as well as over 6,000 cigarette butts in just three hours.

As the warmer weather continues to melt snow, trash is being exposed. Not only is this an unsightly mess it can also be a hazard to wildlife and the lake's clarity.

South Tahoe High's Kody Griffis signs to play football in South Dakota

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We are super proud of you," South Tahoe High Football Coach Louis Franklin told Kody Griffis on Thursday as he signed his letter to play next year for the Presentation College Saints.

Surrounded by family, friends and teammates, Kody said he is looking forward to heading to South Dakota this summer to start college and playing at the next level.

Day of the Young Child to be held in South Lake Tahoe

The annual Day of the Young Child will be held at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This free event is for all ages. There will be activities, games, booths opened by local youth-oriented groups and vendors, and information about jobs in the early childhood education field. A memorable family day with free early childhood activities: painting, beading, clay, bubbles, a puppet show at noon and more.

South Tahoe Refuse trucks will not hit the streets Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Refuse trucks will not go out in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday due to the conditions on the roadways. In many neighborhoods, the trucks cannot get through due to heavy snow.

They will not make it to commercial clients either.

Bring all trash cans and bags back to the home so they won't hamper snow removal operations.

Trash pick up will be on the resident's next scheduled day. South Tahoe Refuse will try to get to all commercial customers Wednesday if the dumpsters are dug out.

SnowGlobe teams up with Waste-Free Earth, Sugar Pine Foundation and others for sustainable festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many see the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe differently - some as a concert, others as noise. What many don't know is the sustainable platform organizers have established over the years.

Each year SnowGlobe and their partners Waste-Free Earth, Chris's Cleaning, Full Circle Compost and South Tahoe Refuse work together on reducing and reusing the waste created at the festival, and with the Sugarpine Foundation to plant trees for future forests.

Special City Council meeting Monday; Big agenda for Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a special City Council meeting on Monday, December 10 at 5:00 p.m.

The councilmembers will officially accept the November 6 election results. Per Elections Code the City Clerk must certify the results of the election to the City Council.

For South Lake Tahoe this means certifying the fact that three councilmembers, Cody Bass, Devin Middlebrook, and Tamara Wallace, won the election along with Sue Blankenship as city clerk, Dave Olivo as city treasurer, and Measure T passed.

Not a good week for bears in South Lake Tahoe - 3 hit and killed by cars

A cub hit and killed by a car on Keller Road Monday night makes three bears who have died in the same manner in just 10 days on the South Shore. In the last three weeks, there have been a total of five hit by cars between Tahoma, South Lake Tahoe and Meyers according to Toogee Sielsch, South Lake Tahoe bear advocate.

In Monday's incident, a vehicle hit one of the three cubs born to Hazel, a neighborhood bear that residents have named and watched over. The speed limit in the area is 25 mph.

Abandoned homeless camps cleaned up in South Lake Tahoe

For the past several months, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has been contacting homeless individuals using the meadow behind Motel 6 as an illegal campground, advising them that the area would soon be off limits.

VHR deadline for bear box installation extended

Citing a lack of bear boxes and contractors to install them, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has extended the July 31, 2018 deadline their installation at vacation home rentals (VHRs) for two months.

The new ordinance that went into effect December 22, 2017 gave homeowners of the VHRs until this month to have them installed. While hundreds have been installed, there are still many waiting to get them in the ground and they are on waiting lists.

Bike challenge week riders pedal 11,215 miles and save $2,493 in gas purchases

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

Nearly 500 gather up 1,458 pounds of trash from Lake Tahoe beaches

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - 499 volunteers hit the beaches of Lake Tahoe Thursday as part of the annual July 5 Beach Cleanup crew. Each year, volunteers hit the beaches to pick up trash left over by holiday revelers.

This year they removed 1,458 pounds of litter from five beaches: Commons Beach in Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Kiva Beach, Nevada Beach and Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Not only did they comb the six miles of beach, but they also sorted and counted the items collected.

John McDougall is an amazing example of what it means to pay it forward. He provides us with not only Pay it Forward grants and scholarships but he is also on the constant lookout for opportunities and benefits to our students.

Earth Day Community Cleanup

Business Expo fills with 85 vendors - Early bird tickets still available

A wide variety of local businesses will fill Harveys Tahoe on Friday, March 30 for the 2018 GO Local: Business EXPO from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This annual event is a community favorite that aims to showcase the most cutting-edge businesses on the South Shore. This year 85 exhibitors will feature their latest and greatest products, services and promotions. All members of the community are encouraged to attend and can expect a fun night of food tasting, beer and wine sampling, live music and vendor giveaways.

Possible South Lake Tahoe ban on Styrofoam

The list of New York City; Takoma Park, Maryland; Seattle, Washington; Washington DC; Miami Beach, Florida; Freeport and Portland, Maine; Nantucket, Massachusetts; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California could soon have South Lake Tahoe added as the 113th California city or county to ban polystyrene. Berkeley has had a ban in place since 1988, the first California city to do so.
