South Tahoe High earns two statewide accolades

South Tahoe High received news this week that they not only made one Top 10 list, but they were also named a California Gold Ribbon school.

A list of the top 10 public high schools in Northern California based on college readiness, according to U.S. News and World Report was released today, and South Tahoe High ranked #10.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that 180 high schools in the state have been honored under the state's new Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program, and South Tahoe High was one of them.

"We were the only El Dorado County high school to win the award," said an ecstatic Chad Houck, Principal at STHS. The other two winners from the county were middle schools in Latrobe and Placerville Union Elementary School Districts.

South Tahoe High won the award for their Chrome Book program and also received recognition as a Title I Academic Achieving School. This additional recognition is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line.

"These schools are academically successful, vibrant, and innovative centers of learning and teaching," Torlakson said. "They provide great examples of the things educators are doing right—embracing rigorous academic standards, providing excellence and creativity in teaching, and creating a positive school climate.

There are 2,199 high schools in the state in 522 school districts. See a complete list of Gold Ribbon Schools here.
