Lake Tahoe Unified School District saves taxpayers $3.3M by refinancing bonds

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was able to refinance $15.15 million in general obligation bonds in September, saving property owners in the district $3,335,698 in property taxes.

With low interest rates brought about by the pandemic and economic uncertainty, LTUSD refinanced two series of their Election of 2008 General Obligation Bonds.

“With interest rates near historic lows, we wanted to take this opportunity to save our community money, particularly in light of the downturn in the economy,” said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler.

City of South Lake Tahoe to fly flags at half-staff for former Recreation Superintendent Judy Crawford

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Former Recreation Superintendent Judy Crawford has passed away. She worked for the City from 1974 until 2003 and was the first woman to hold that position. Crawford was also the President of Great Ideas for Tahoe, or GIFT, during her time in the community.

Born in New Orleans, LA, in 1948, she lived around the country until she settled in South Lake Tahoe.

She started work for the City as a Recreation Supervisor and was eventually promoted to Recreation Superintendent. What she loved the most, teaching young kids how to swim.

Smoke from Loyalton Fire leads to postponement of Washoe County school start

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Students in the Washoe County School District will not be going back to school as planned on Monday, August 17. COVID-19 didn't delay the start but heavy smoke and unhealthy air from the Loyalton Fire did.

The fire had consumed over 28,000 acres as of Sunday, prompting officials to delay the start at all schools in the district except for those in Lake Tahoe. Both Incline Elementary and High Schools had a scheduled start of school for August 31.

Registration open for South Lake Tahoe Junior Giants virtual summer season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Summer baseball leagues across the county will be different this year due to COVID-19, and the South Lake Tahoe Junior Giants program is no different.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department has teamed up once again with the Giants Community Fund to offer a free, modified Junior Giants Baseball Program for the 2020 baseball season for youth ages 5-18.

Lauri Kemper selected to fill vacant seat on Lake Tahoe Unified School Board of Trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a 3-1 vote the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees voted to bring retired engineer Lauri Kemper on board to fill Barbara Bannar's term.

Bannar resigned in March and her term ends December 2022.

Originally there were three candidates but one dropped out of the running, Chris Proctor, leaving Kemper and David Wise. Interviews took place during the Tuesday LTUSD Board meeting on ZOOM, each candidate having two minutes to answer each of the board's ten questions.

Douglas County school board selects their HR director as next superintendent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District has hired a new superintendent to replace the retiring Teri White.

In a unanimous decision, the board voted 7-0 to hire Keith Lewis as the next superintendent. Lewis is the District's current Human Resources executive director. He will start to transition into the position immediately and officially take over when White leaves, sometime this summer.

Lake Tahoe Community College one of two new free COVID-19 testing sites in county

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County officials announced Sunday they will open two appointment-only community sites for COVID-19 testing for any resident wanting to be tested for the virus, one in South Lake Tahoe and the other in Shingle Springs.

These sites follow Governor Newsom's announcement last week to add more than 80 community COVID-19 testing sites across the state, focusing on underserved communities. His goal is to test 60,000 to 80,000 people per day for the virus as the state prepares to reopen.

LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19

LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

South Lake Tahoe and all other El Dorado County schools to close starting Monday

The decision was made for the safety and wellness of students, families, and school personnel due to the current threat of the world-wide coronavirus COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in El Dorado County.

South Lake Tahoe community meets new LTUSD superintendent

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Todd Cutler is officially the new superintendent for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). The Board of Trustees unanimously approved his contract and he was introduced to the standing room only crowd that gathered to meet him.

The only item on the agenda is to discuss "superintendent employment." Reportedly the district is still on track to announce the board's chosen candidate at their next regular meeting on March 10 and is using this meeting to finalize a contract.

New superintendent selected for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

"The community will be very happy with who we selected," Board President Larry Reilly announced during Tuesday's board meeting.

Eastbound I-80 closed after multiple big rigs crash near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eastbound Interstate 80 is currently closed after there were multiple collisions involving semi-trucks near Nyack, Calif. Given the number of trucks involved, it could be several hours until the road reopens to eastbound traffic. Alternate routes are advised for the time being though caution is urged on the major bypass, SR20 due to scheduled tree work and increase in traffic.

According to the CalTrans maintenance superintendent, a full closure of eastbound I-80 is expected for at least 4-6 hours. or between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

LTUSD Board of Trustees keep same leadership for 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual organizational meeting Friday, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education decided to keep the leadership they had over the past year again for 2020.

Citing a desire for experience as they go through the process of getting a new superintendent to replace the retiring Dr. James Tarwater, the board voted unanimously to have Larry Reilly continue as board president and Barbara Bannar as board clerk. Bannar has been on the board eleven years.
