Officer Ruth Loehr and other officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) office in South Lake Tahoe conducted a bike rodeo for the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Sierra House Elementary Monday, the first of three they are holding at local schools this week.
All students who participated had to go through a maze of stop signs and cones, all while following the rules for bicyclists, including wearing a helmet.
Prior to the rodeo, Office Loehr led the students through a series of safety rules, showing them hand signals, how to look both ways at a stop sign and the importance of following the rules of the road for their safety.
Pete Fink from the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition was on hand to not only give out helmets, but to assist the students with their proper usage. Other members will be helping with the rodeos leading up Bike to School days in South Lake Tahoe, June 1-3.
Loehr said only Sierra House and Bijou Elementary Schools took her up on the offer of holding a bike rodeo this year. CHP will also be traveling to the Diamond Valley School in Woodfords.
