Two women survive after vehicle plunges into Carson River

Two women escaped what could have been a tragic accident after their vehicle plunged into the fast-moving Carson River early Friday morning.

Deputies were called into the Carson River Canyon near Deer Run Road in the early morning hours, for a report of a vehicle that went into the river. Dispatch advised both occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and were safe. Dispatch received the initial call at 2:42 a.m.

One woman, who is pregnant, was taken to the hospital for an injury to her foot, according to family friend Crystal Pacheco. The other woman suffered minor scratches.

The women were in the canyon and apparently hit a rock, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, said Pacheco. Both lost their cell phones in the process. One woman took off down the road yelling for help, Pacheco said.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong notes that a gate to the entrance of the river road has been assembled and will be installed soon.

There is a meeting next week with Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, city officials and the sheriff's office with plans to install the gate, where the road will be closed at dusk. Road users will be able to get out of the area, but will not be able to enter once the gate is closed at dusk, Furlong said.

On Thursday, Carson City Fire Department released a video and public service announcement warning residents to be careful around the river, due to heavy snowmelt runoff.
