On January 14, 2021, the City Planning Commission denied a request from James Street LLC to change the name of the approved operator and extend their deadline to open by six months.

Even though smoke detectors have been required in new construction and in homes undergoing a remodel for decades, not all homes have working detectors. They are broken, have a dead battery, or missing completely.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just moments ago, the Greater Sacramento Region, of which El Dorado County is a part, was granted authority by the State to exit the Regional Stay At Home Order, effective immediately. This is based on the State’s four-week projection putting the region’s ICU capacity at 19.1 percent, above the 15 percent threshold announced last month.

Small New Year's Eve crowds at Stateline keep US50 open
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/01/2021 - 7:01pmSTATELINE, Nev. - It was a much quieter holiday at Stateline this year with a decrease in calls for service, five arrests, and the lowest number of New Year's celebrants in a few decades.
US 50, the highway that runs from South Lake Tahoe into Stateline was not closed due the low number of people in the area. Law enforcement was able to keep those wanting to bring in the new year outside to the sidewalk or they stayed inside the casinos.
"The celebrants were well behaved and embraced the New Year’s Eve celebration," said Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.
Stay-at-home order likely to be extended for South Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento Region

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are part of the Sacramento Region which fell under Governor Newsom's Stay-at-Home Order on December 10, 2020.
As of December 31, the Sacramento Region ICU availability was 14.4 percent.
Law enforcement prepares for possible New Year's Eve crowds on South Shore

With no SnowGlobe this year due to the pandemic, and Heavenly Village New Year's Eve activities canceled, it is unknown as to what will take place in an area that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets to bring in the new year. Last year it was estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people took to the streets at midnight at Stateline and 6,500 at Heavenly Village for its 9:00 p.m. fireworks.
South Shore casinos again perform better than most of Nevada

This amounts to a 17.75 percent decrease compared to November 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $937,533,406, according to the monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

Even during the pandemic and current "Stay-at-Home" orders in California, area roads were full this past holiday weekend with those seeking play time in the snow.
Each year, law enforcement has to deal with those who seem to have forgotten the laws of being safe on the roadway and parking on the highways, and not observing "no parking" zone rules.

I said many times while I was on the Board that every family in the District was my family, and every child in the District was my responsibility. Bread & Broth will be open on Monday, December 21 and 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with bags of food. Also, their Friday food bag operation will not be open on Christmas Day but will resume on New Year's Day, January 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are located at St. Theresa Grace Hall at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.
Bank of the West temporarily closed due to staffing shortage

A representative at the bank's branch in Carson City said it is a COVID-related closure and some staff has been in quarantine as they await test results. This has been a problem at many area banks since the pandemic started.
Once staff can be assembled to reopen safely, expect the doors to the branch at 2161 Lake Tahoe Boulevard to open once again.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2020 - 3:12pmDel Laine has left her mark on South Lake Tahoe in ways that many local residents might not know. She was a mover and shaker, whose focus was on making the city a better place. Her most important role, though, was promoting the well-being of women.
This pioneer died Dec. 18, 2020, at home from natural causes, with family at her side. She was 90.
She was born Dolores Mae Wright on March 20, 1930, in Oakland, Calif., to Mabel Paulson and Leslie Wright.

Stay-at-Home orders for El Dorado, Alpine counties and rest in Sacramento Region

The order has gone into effect because the Sacramento Region, of which South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado and Alpine counties are part, now has staffed ICU bed availability under 15 percent.

COVID-19 testing available on LTCC campus through winter

The college’s standalone Physical Education building is the only large-scale COVID-19 active virus testing site operating in El Dorado County.

Of those, 58 are in El Dorado Hills, 32 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 11 in North County, 11 in Greater Placerville, nine in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 13 in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, four in South County, 51 in Lake Tahoe region. There four less awaiting address confirmation (total still awaiting address confirmation is 14).
One of those new cases, 17 are under the age of 18, 96 are aged 18-49, 40 are aged 50-64, and 32 aged 65 or older.
Road closure near Camino for next several months

A section of westbound Carson Road will be closed for several months due to bridge work as part of the U.S. Highway 50 Camino Safety Project.
Monthly Nevada gaming report: Lake Tahoe area casinos post gains

This amounts to a 19.50 percent decrease compared to October 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,021,966,875, according to the monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.
New California 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew starts Saturday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/19/2020 - 5:47pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, California has issued a limited Stay at Home Order. All non-essential work and gatherings must stop from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. in counties in the purple tier, including El Dorado County.
This will take effect at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2020 and remain in place for one month until 5:00 a.m. December 21.
The curfew comes after 40 counties moved into the more restrictive purple tier after experiencing a rise in hospitalizations and positive cases of COVID-19.
SLTPD temporarily ceases fingerprint scans
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 1:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fingerprint Live Scan services will cease for the time being at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department due to COVID-19 restrictions. As much of California moved into the Purple Tier the department adjusted its areas of public contact.
To assist with the hiring of first responders and medical personnel SLTPD will be able to provide pre-employment fingerprint services by appointment only. The SLTPD front lobby is closed at this time so please call 530.542.6100 to schedule that appointment or for other normal front counter services.

Mountain View Fire near Walker burns almost 21,000 acres; US395 remains closed
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 11:31amThe Mountain View Fire near Walker, California has burned 20,879 acres according to the Mono County Sheriff's Office. There has been one fatality due to the fire which started Tuesday when a fallen powerline ignited dry brush. Winds drove the flames rapidly, finally stopping progress when rain started to fall overnight.
Fire operations report that damage assessments are underway and it could be days before its safe for residents to return. Evacuation orders are still in effect for Walker, Coleville and Topaz.
Heavy wet snow blankets Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 10:42amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The overnight snow storm that hit the Sierra Tuesday night left over a foot of snow on the mountains around Lake Tahoe.
Ten inches of new snow fell overnight at Homewood Mountain Resort’s summit on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, and two inches at the base (lake level). With a winter storm warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight, the National Weather Service forecast is calling for another 4-8” of snow throughout the day today, and 1-3” tonight.

New fire starts in Douglas County near Foothill
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2020 - 4:59pmUPDATE 7:25PM: Voluntary evacuations have been lifted for residents around the fire. Mottsville remains closed, but should be cleared soon according to Douglas County officials.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A new fire has started in Douglas County in the Foothill area at the base of Kingsbury Grade. Voluntary evacuations have been put in place for the Apple Creek, Foothill, Mottsville and surrounding areas, all who have been asked to remain alert and stay vigilant.
Three fires burning from Doyle to Walker; all fed by high winds

Due to the fast moving nature of the fire, an Evacuation Order has been issued for the Walker, Coleville and Topaz areas, and US 395 is still closed from Bridgeport to the Nevada state line. There is 0 percent containment and 5,000 acres burned according to Inci-web. Liberty Utilities has de-energized the communities of Walker and Coleville up to Topaz at the state line for safety precautions. Liberty is working with all emergency agencies and will safely restore power when possible.
Non-essential services offered by City of South Lake Tahoe moved remotely

With the new restrictions on businesses, non-essential City of South Lake Tahoe offices will be closed. City employees working in non-essential offices will be available either by e-mail or telephone to the public.

"If I can get through this, I can get through anything," said Beautiful Mess proprietor Jessica Marks of the pandemic.
