ADA Escorts to Vikingsholm Brings Joy to Guests; Volunteers Needed

Many people make the one mile walk down the hill at Emerald Bay to visit Vikingsholm every year. Of course, a one mile walk down means that, in order to return home, a one mile walk uphill is necessary.

Many of the visitors to Lake Tahoe aren't able to make the walk, perhaps due to injury, age or other conditions. This no longer is an issue to keep anyone from enjoying the beautiful Emerald Bay State Park.

For people who have a valid ADA placard, volunteer docents will escort them as they drive down a private gravel road to Vikingsholm. Currently, docents are available three days a week for this service and one must call 24 hours ahead of time to arrange the escort.

According to volunteer Denise Haerr the people who now have access to the castle are very appreciative. She said it is the most rewarding volunteer activity that she participates in. "One guy we took down told his family history via photos," Haerr said. "His grandpa was one of the 200 craftsmen that built the house. He had seen the outside, as a boy, and wanted to tour inside. I got goosebumps on that one."

The cost for the escorted service is $10 which covers the parking permit, the same as if they parked at the top of the road. Guests will drive down and are able to tour and stay at Vikingsholm a couple of hours before heading back up.

Ranger Jennifer of Emerald Bay State Park says more docents are needed so they can provide this service more often. To reserve a spot or find out more about volunteering, contact EBSP at 530-525-9529. Once reservations are made, docents will meet the cars with ADA placards at the D.L. Bliss Visitor's Center.
