SPOONER LAKE, Nev. — Join a park ranger on a guided, self-driven vehicle tour through the Spooner Backcountry of Spooner Lake State Park. We’ll follow the remnants of the historic Virginia Gold Hill Water Company flumes and pipes, and discuss Comstock history as we enjoy the day driving through the scenic park backcountry.
Vehicles are not provided; you’ll need to bring your own 4WD vehicle, which must be a mid or full-sized truck or SUV with good clearance. Drivers must be accustomed to driving on backcountry dirt roads. Bring lunch, water, sturdy boots, and sunscreen, and dress for the weather.
The tour will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Spooner, and will travel through the Spooner backcountry on dirt roads approximately 15 miles, exiting at the Lakeview Estates near the south end of Washoe Valley by 4 p.m. Sign-ups are required and participation is limited to the first 6 vehicles.
Carpooling is encouraged (we can help with that), and please, no vehicles with single occupants (drivers). Sign up by calling 775-749-5980 or emailing smicklus@parks.nv.gov. We’ll meet in the upper parking lot of Spooner Lake State Park.
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Spooner Lake State Park is located 1/2 mile north on State Route 28 from the Highway 50, Spooner Summit intersection.
COST: Free. Donations appreciated.
CONTACT: Steve Micklus, 775-749-5980, smicklus@parks.nv.gov
