Douglas County man dies in glider crash 8 miles east of Minden Airport

A 74-year-old man from Minden died Sunday after his AMS Carat Model A Power Glider crashed in the Pinenut Mountain Range.
At 2:50 p.m. on August 7, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Nevada Highway Patrol of an aircraft Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) notification. From the air, the Nevada Civil Air Patrol and U.S. Air Force located a crashed glider approximately eight miles east of the Minden Tahoe Airport.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office along with the East Fork Fire Protection District located the crashed glider. There, they found the pilot deceased in the wreckage.
The glider pilot has been identified as Joseph N. Lowenhardt of Minden, Nevada. The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the FAA.
