More thunderstorms on the way for Lake Tahoe region

Another round of thunderstorms will develop Wednesday afternoon and evening over the Lake Tahoe Basin and eastern portions of Alpine County as low pressure moves north along the California coast, the National Weather Service in Reno reports. Much of the region is under a flash flood watch.

With plenty of moisture and instability from the low, thunderstorms could be strong to severe with 1-inch or larger hail and wind gusts of more than 58 mph. The storms could produce flash flooding, especially in the green shaded area on the map above, which is from Lake Tahoe, Alpine, Douglas and Lyon counties into the Carson City, Dayton and Reno regions.

The main impact from thunderstorms will be heavy rain with flash flooding possible. Other impacts include frequent and dangerous lightning, hail up to around one inch in diameter and strong outflow winds.

For boaters, strong winds and lightning from thunderstorms pose an immediate danger. If you are out on the lake when thunderstorms develop, return to shore as soon as possible. Outflow winds can rapidly increase wave heights to over 3 feet, which can capsize small boats.
