Tahoe Youth and Family Services was created in 1971 as a community response to the number of adolescents killed due to drug overdoses. The original name of the agency was Awakening Peace, which was a drop-in center for teens to hang out and receive drug diversion services. Since then, TYFS has expanded with a new mission statement: To promote the healthy development of children, families, and individuals through counseling, mentoring, and support programs.

TYFS serves youth and families in South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Alpine County in both schools, their offices and youth drop-in centers.
