Larry Eugene Schaffer passed away on October 28, 2020 after a brief illness. He was 76-years-old.
The son of Harold and Mary Schaffer. Larry grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Larry enlisted in the Marines at age 18 where he was a radio mechanic during the Vietnam War. After the Marines he attended California State University Northridge and received a degree in Sociology. He went on to receive his Master’s degree.
Upon his return from the war Larry married Elizabeth Anne Brewer who preceded him in death after 10 years of marriage. Larry and Beth had one son, Jason Schaffer.
Larry was a long time resident of South Lake Tahoe, having moved to the community in 1978.
Although he had a masters degree, living in the mountains was what made him happy.
To provide for his family he worked at many places including Carson Tahoe Rents, seasonal winter chaining, and he managed Stateline Cinema and Bud’s Ice cream. He spent many years working at Harrah's and Embassy Suites as a Supervising painter and then Head Engineer.
While working at Embassy Suites he won Employee of the Millennium, an award only rarely given out. He was always well liked and took pride in his work.
In his retirement years he opened a successful notary business, Alpine Mobile Notary. On weekends Larry took pride in his home improvement projects and yard work and winter months saw him meticulously snow plowing the driveway. In fact he won best yard in the unofficial neighborhood yard competition 21 years running.
Larry worked very hard, but he loved his family most of all. Larry is survived by his wife of 39 years Sandra Schaffer, son Jason Schaffer and his wife Kari, daughter Lia Story and her husband Dylan, sister Sharon Scott, and grandchildren Austin, Chase, Blake, Sophie and Donovan.
Private gravesite services will be held for immediate family only.
A celebration of life will be held at Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers on October 31,2020 at 2:00 p.m.
Donations in Larry’s name to the Veterans Guest House in Reno would be greatly appreciated. Info @veteransguesthouse.org.
