Pipe Keepers is a citizen science program to address the threat of stormwater pollution entering Lake Tahoe. Runoff from rain storms and snowmelt is the largest source of pollution that degrades Lake clarity. League staff will train you to survey local neighborhoods and collect stormwater samples during rain and snowmelt events.
As a Pipe Keeper, you will join a dedicated group of volunteers who monitor stormwater dumping into Lake Tahoe from pipes all around the Lake. The water samples and observations that you collect during storms are used to help us determine the biggest sources of pollutants flowing into Lake Tahoe and work towards finding solutions.
There is an upcoming training on November 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the League to Save Lake Tahoe Offices located 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.
The training starts off with an introduction, then the group heads out to the field for Watershed Watcher training and an intro to stormwater sampling.
Volunteers should wear comfortable walking shoes that they don’t mind getting dirty and bring a reusable water bottle and hat/sunglasses for the field training. Dress for the weather (waterproof jacket if raining, etc).
