Sass overtakes Swanson as new count of votes released; still more to count

If anyone ever needed proof that every vote counts, they could look to the recent elections in South Lake Tahoe. In June, the County Supervisor District 5 primary election ended up with just 14 votes separating the second, third and fourth positions. The top two, Sue Novasel and Kenny Curtzwiler advanced into this week's election.
The South Lake Tahoe City Council election is during out to be the same type of scenario. The votes have changed several times since the initial release of precinct ballots late Tuesday night. As the provisional and absentee ballots are being counted in Placerville, Austin Sass moved ahead of incumbent Angela Swanson by 22 votes. There are still a few hundred votes to be counted.
The reason the absentee ballots take so long to count is that election workers need to verify the signature on the ballot with what is recorded on original documents.
With the number of ballots counted on Friday there may be a final count released as early as Monday.
