The have been eight tremblers in the Mammoth Lakes / Mono Lake area in the last 12 hours, the smallest measured 1.2 on the Richter Scale, the largest at 3.7, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory on the UNR campus.

This area is a very active earthquake area, with swarms not unusual as it is one of the most seismically active volcanic regions in California. In 2014, there were more than 600 registered earthquakes in Mammoth in 36 hours.

The first one on Friday was 3.5 at 9:06 a.m., followed by a 1.6 at 12:35 p.m., 3.7 at 2:19 p.m., 2.6 at 2:50 p.m., 2.9 at 2:52 p.m., 1.2 at 3:14 p.m., 1.3 at 3:20 p.m. and 3.1 at 6:27 p.m.

"This is the nature of earthquakes," said Mickey Cassar, a records tech with seismic data at University of Nevada, Reno. "There are ebbs and flows. Earthquakes happen this way, a sequence goes on for awhile."

An earthquake swarm in the Carson Valley this past summer. In a 48 hour period there were more than three dozen earthquakes, the largest being 3.74 and the smallest being about 1.0 in an area between Gardnerville and Topaz Lake.
