Hike with a ranger this summer in Lake Tahoe

The sun is out, the snow is melting and now is the time to get out and enjoy summer on your National Forest lands. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) it partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort once again 'invites the public to 'Hike with a Ranger' beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.

$8.8M headed to LTCC in matching funds for classroom modernization

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m.to discuss approval of funds needed to get Sierra House Elementary opened by the beginning of the school year.

Since a Labor Day 2018 fire, the school which housed grades K-5 has been closed with students split between South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary.

There have been concerns in the community the school wouldn't be ready to open in August.

Tahoe Township hotels and VHRs now have new $5/night surcharge

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A new $5 per night surcharge will be added to all hotel rooms and other transient lodging accommodations within the Lake Tahoe Township area of Douglas County.

As a result of Senate Bill 461, the new law adding the fee went into effect July 1, 2019, giving the new charge to Tahoe-Douglas Visitor’s Authority (TDVA) for a planned event center in Stateline. It affects all bookings received by the lodging properties after July 1.

South Lake Tahoe jury finds local man guilty of attempted murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ariel Mendoza Arce was found guilty of attempted murder by a South Lake Tahoe jury on June 26, 2019.

On August 13, 2018 at 2:40 a.m., four nurses from Reno staying in a hotel in the Heavenly Village area heard a woman screaming for help. When the nurses went to investigate the screams they witnessed Arce viciously attacking a woman by punching her, kicking her, and stomping on her head.

Chautauqua of Lizzie Borden and historian Mark McLaughlin at Dangberg Historic Park

Chautauquan Kim Harris will portray Lizzie A. Borden on Wednesday, July 10, at 6:30 pm, and historian Mark McLaughlin will speak on “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era; Stories, Facts and Fun” on Saturday, July 13, at 10:00 am, at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Lizzie Andrew Borden was tried and acquitted in a court of law for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The court of public opinion sentenced her to a life of public scrutiny and branded her a social pariah.

Caltrans: Plan ahead for your 4th of July and Celebrity Golf trips to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next two weeks will be some of the busiest days for South Lake Tahoe due to two of the area's highly attended summer occasions. The best way to enjoy travel both for locals and visitors is to plan ahead and know what to expect.

Starting with the 4th of July holiday, expect heavier than normal traffic on roads to, from and around Lake Tahoe Wednesday-Sunday. Caltrans work on their area projects will be suspended during that duration with roadwork resuming Monday, July 8.

South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District renewal process begins

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District (SLTTID) expires at the end of this year and City Council has started the process to renew it for another ten years. The district was originally created in 2006 to secure a stable funding source for tourism promotion and community marketing through self-imposed fees.

Gaming revenues rebound in Lake Tahoe; Drop almost 6% statewide

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released its monthly revenue report today and casinos on the south shore of Lake Tahoe posted an 11.50 percent increase when compared to May 2018.

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $981,842,080 for the month, a 5.96 percent decrease compared to May 2018, when licensees
reported a gaming win of $1,044,072,414. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019), gaming win for the state has decreased 0.12 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

North Tahoe and Meeks Bay Fire Districts ban all recreational campfires and open burning

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - June 26, 2019 was the first day of the year categorized as "High Fire Danger" in the Lake Tahoe Basin, prompting two area fire districts to impose fire restrictions by suspending all recreational campfires and open burning.

On June 17 CAL FIRE suspended residential burn permits in the Tahoe Basin, followed by today's new restrictions by North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) and Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD).

Stateline redevelopment area remains intact after Douglas County Commissioners' decision

STATELINE, Nev. - Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA2) at Stateline is moving forward despite a move to have it dissolved by Douglas County Commissioner Dave Nelson.

There was an overflow crowd at the commissioner's June 20 meeting at Lake Tahoe. Many of those who could not fit in the meeting room were accommodated with audio feed in the judges' chambers and the bottom floor of the parking garage.

Some South Lake Tahoe beaches to temporarily close due to high water levels

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) will limit public access and temporarily close portions of some south shore beaches starting Friday, June 28, 2019. They announced beaches they own near Lakeview Commons and the Upper Truckee Marsh will close for public safety and to protect sensitive wildlife habitat and areas prone to erosion.

250 cigarette butt collection canisters to be installed around Lake Tahoe

Cigarette butts are the most commonly gathered items at beach and other clean-ups around Lake Tahoe. At the League to Save Tahoe's most recent cleanups this month (the Tahoe City Cleanup and the South Lake Tahoe Bike Path Cleanup) over 4,500 cigarette butts were collected. Last year more than 27,600 cigarette butts were collected in and around Lake Tahoe by the League alone.

Conservancy approves $500K to spend on Alta Mira project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) board voted Thursday to spend $500,000 to start planning for improved beach access, stormwater improvement, and shoreline stabilization along part of the South Lake Tahoe shoreline that once housed the Alta Mira Building.

The South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® partnered with Vitalant, previously
United Blood Services, to host a Blood Drive on Monday, June 17. This event was open to the public. Realtors® and members of the community made appointments and dropped in to donate. There was a total of 22 donors, translating into 66 lives that can be saved.

Miss Hooters International contestants help out in South Lake Tahoe before pageant

STATELINE, Nev. - After a week of women’s empowerment seminars, community outreach and preliminary events on the South Shore, Briana Smith from Fort Lauderdale, Florida was crowned Miss Hooters International 2019.

There were 80 Hooters Girls from around the world competing for the title during the 23rd annual pageant. The winner was crowned Thursday night during the Lee Brice concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater announces retirement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Justin Timberlake heading to Lake Tahoe for American Century Championship

After missing last year, pop music superstar Justin Timberlake has just been added to the field of celebrities heading to Lake Tahoe July 9-14 for the 30th annual American Century Championship.

His addition has amped up the celebrity wattage at the annual golf tournament that will also see Steph Curry, Tony Romo, Charles Barkley and Aaron Rodgers among the 90 sports and entertainment personalities. Athletes include 16 Hall of Famers and 22 active players – among them nine All-Stars – as well as an impressive list of actors and comedians.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Columbus Day has been a holiday at the federal level since 1934, one that honored Christopher Columbus for, what was once thought, the discovery of America.

In the last two decades, a lot of information has been uncovered that said, while Columbus was a brilliant mariner, he exploited and enslaved the indigenous population (according to the final volume of a compendium of Columbus-era documents published by the University of California, Los Angeles's Medieval and Renaissance Center in 2004).

South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

Hooters World Wing Eating Championship at the Heavenly Village

Steph Curry heading to Lake Tahoe to play golf in American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Coming off his fifth straight NBA Finals appearance, basketball superstar Steph Curry is returning to Lake Tahoe for the 30th annual American Century Championship.

The popular celebrity golf tournament will be held July 9-14 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Curry, the Golden State Warriors two-time NBA Most Valuable Player is a contender in the tournament. He is considered among the favorites. Harrah’s and Harveys Race and Sportsbook have installed him at 15-1 odds along with San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski and former Sharks star Jeremy Roenick.

Successful Mother's Day Diaper Drive

Choices for Children would like to thank the community for their amazing support of the 2019 Healthy Bottom Line Mother's Day Diaper Drive. Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. We received thousands of diapers that will be distributed to our community's youngest and most vulnerable residents.

90 celebrities headed to Lake Tahoe for 30th annual American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - For 30 years celebrities from the world of music, sports, the big screen, television, and policitics have headed to Lake Tahoe in the month of July for the annual celebrity golf tournament, American Century Championship at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

This year, 90 celebrities return July 9-14 for golf and superstar hijinks.

Carson City man identified as victim in Thursday's deadly DUI crash in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released more details about Thursday's fatal crash near Round Hill, including the name of the deceased.

At 7:06 a.m. on June 13, NHP Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash on US50 near Elks Point Road.

Missoula Children’s Theatre auditions coming soon for Jack in the Beanstalk

Tahoe Arts Project is hosting the Missoula Children's Theater again in 2019, and this summer's performance will be Jack in the Beanstalk.

On July 8, auditions will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Tahoe Valley Elementary. Then, the children selected will start rehearsals that afternoon, depending on which role they have.

There are over 60 roles for youth ages 5-17 (the 5-year-olds must have completed kindergarten). The auditions are free but if selected for a role the cost is $50 per child to participate.

Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

New additions to South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade; Deadline to participate extended

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual 4th of July Parade in South Lake Tahoe is adding some new features in 2019, including a 20-foot-tall eagle balloon.

Starting at 10:00 a.m. the parade will leave the staging area on Ski Run Boulevard and head west along Lake Tahoe Boulevard (US50) to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

There will be dancers, live music, floats, neighborhood groups with a Food Truck Park at the finish. A marching band isn't scheduled this year due to their high cost, but perhaps another one will find their wait to South Lake Tahoe.

Mickey and Doug had been married for 48 years. He is also survived by daughter Shannon Crowe, daughter Kendra Miesner, and granddaughters Brianna and Adrienne. He was an avid dog lover and Cleo and Jake will miss him very much.
