Mark McLaughlin, “The Storm King”, is an award-winning, nationally published author, professional speaker, and photographer with six books and more than 650 articles in print.

He will present a multimedia presentation on his newest book, "The Donner Party: Weathering the Storm" at the South Lake Library on June 18 at 6 p.m.

Pam Houston will be the featured writer at Lake Tahoe Community College's Writers Series on Thursday, May 8 in the college's library at 8 p.m.

Houston’s most recent novel, Contents May Have Shifted, was published in 2012. The book has been called “an absorbing, generous, ravishing book by a high priestess of you-have-to-read-this prose” by author Cheryl Strayed, who penned the New York Times bestseller Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

The Friends of the Library and the South Lake Tahoe Library are coming together to celebrate World Book Night on April 23. Throughout the day, volunteer book lovers will be seen in various locations within our community giving away hundreds of free books. They have a wide array of titles, from classics to bestsellers, young adult to large print. There is a book to suit every taste!

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series is celebrating National Poetry Month on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Aspen Room with poets June Sylvester Saraceno and Laura Wetherington. These award-winning poets will read from their works, engage the audience with a Q and A, and sign copies of their books. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.

Learning about how to run a business in South Lake Tahoe isn't always the easiest task, but the City took one step closer to stream lining the process at a community meeting Wednesday night.

City Attorney Tom Watson led a discussion group in the City Council chambers, trying to find out what issues businesses have with the City and the City Code.

Three Placerville 18 year olds have been arrested in connection with three auto thefts that took place in South Lake Tahoe between 7 p.m. March 31 and 11 a.m. April 1. The trio is also suspected in stealing contents from other cars as well.

Brian Barnes, Elija Kidwell and Sean Murphy were arrested and book into El Dorado County Jail on felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy for at least one of the auto thefts and to some of the property thefts.

The Bean Bar has been open on the south shore of Lake Tahoe since December and has already become a favorite of both South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors.

Located in the Round Hill Shopping Center, the Bean Bar is open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for now, and once summer arrives they'll extend hours to 6 p.m.

Hunger isn't just an inner city problem. Hunger isn't just a third world problem. Hunger affects approximately 16 million children in the United States with 3 million rural community households being "food insecure."

How can children focus on solving a math problem or writing an English paper when he or she is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? School work is forced to compete with hunger.

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno’s new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation’s top poets.

The Friends of the Library are hosting the first Book Sale of the year with hundreds of previously read, some new and all loved books will be sold. Remember FOL members get in at 9 AM, before the crowds. You can join that day, if you are not yet a member.

The sale will be at the main library on March 15, 2014 at 10 a.m.

Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing the film "Storm over Everest" on Friday February 28th at 7:00pm. This gripping story is about the 1996 tragedy on Mt. Everest which was originally chronicled in the book "Into Thin Air". Produced by American climber and film maker David Breashears who was on the mountain as the events unfolded on that fateful night and participated in the rescue attempts. He takes us back to the mountain and also interviews survivors of the event.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for the Tony Award-winning musical Man of La Mancha on Monday, February 3 at 7 p.m. in the Duke Theatre. Callbacks will be Saturday, February 8 at 12:30 p.m.

The book for this popular musical was written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. LTCC’s production will be directed by Susan Boulanger, with musical direction by Dr. Mark D. Williams and choreography by Angela Smith.

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

Northern Nevada students and others are holding "Walk for Philippines Typhoon Victims" starting at University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) on November 24 in support of the victims of deadly super-typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), one of the most powerful ever recorded on land.

The Landing Resort & Spa, Lake Tahoe’s first lakeside five-star luxury resort, has hired British celebrity chef Maria Elia to oversee its new Jimmy’s Restaurant, serving wood-fired Greek seafood and locally sourced California cuisine.

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series proudly presents an evening of poetry with Robert Krut and Patricia Smith on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the LTCC Library. The poets will read, engage the audience in a Q & A and sign books. This free event is open to the community and books will be available for purchase.

Robert Krut’s “This Is the Ocean” is the recipient of the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually by local publisher Bona Fide Books in honor of the Lake Tahoe artist who died in 2009.

On Oct. 11 at 7 pm Bona Fide Books will launch poet Robert Krut’s award-winning collection “This Is the Ocean” with a reading and book signing as part of the Lake Tahoe Community College’s Writers’ Series. The event is free and open to the public.

Local author Bill Morgan (pen name Wade Morgan) will be discussing his book, Six Days in Siberia, a suspense thriller with overtones of a spy novel on October 1 at 6 pm at the SLT Library. The author has over 50 years of experience as a soldier, civil engineer, forest ranger, director of an environmental regulatory agency, management consultant and technical writer. Mr. Morgan has been to Siberia three times, including an assignment in the town of Baikalsk where he conducted a seminar on conflict resolution for officials of that town.

Heavenly Mountain Resort will be a flurry of activity during Labor Day weekend, as the resort hosts the 27th Annual Heavenly Sports Tent Sale, the Heavenly Mountain Run, and the Kiwanis Community Fair at the California Main Lodge.

Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off

The second annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will return to the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The event will begin at 10:00 am and run until 4:00 pm. Admission is free, and door prizes will be given away every fifteen minutes. There will also be a drawing for one hundred dollars cash, given to one attendee.

Children's author, Kate Parkhurst, will read aloud her new children's picture book, "The Invasion of the Cavity Creatures", while teaching children about proper dental hygiene in a really fun, unique way. Join us for this free event sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
