First round of American Century Championship starts Friday at Edgewood Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The celebrities taking part in the 30th annual American Century Championship are putting aside the fun and games and getting down to business as the first round starts Friday, July 12.

The oddsmakers at Harrah's Tahoe/Harveys have Tony Romo and Mark Mulder as the favorites, with John Smoltz, Kyle Williams, Mardy Fish, Steph Curry, Joe Pavelski, Jeremy Roenick and Trent Dilfer rounding out the favorites at the book. Charles Barkley once again sits at the bottom of that list at odds of 7500-1.

$8.8M headed to LTCC in matching funds for classroom modernization

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A promise made to the community when they voted to pass Measure F in 2014 is coming to fruition after Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) was notified they are receiving $8.8M in matching funds for the modernization of their campus. This sets the stage for $17.6 million to be spent on modernization and upgrades to LTCC’s main building.

Justin Timberlake heading to Lake Tahoe for American Century Championship

After missing last year, pop music superstar Justin Timberlake has just been added to the field of celebrities heading to Lake Tahoe July 9-14 for the 30th annual American Century Championship.

His addition has amped up the celebrity wattage at the annual golf tournament that will also see Steph Curry, Tony Romo, Charles Barkley and Aaron Rodgers among the 90 sports and entertainment personalities. Athletes include 16 Hall of Famers and 22 active players – among them nine All-Stars – as well as an impressive list of actors and comedians.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Coming off his fifth straight NBA Finals appearance, basketball superstar Steph Curry is returning to Lake Tahoe for the 30th annual American Century Championship.

The popular celebrity golf tournament will be held July 9-14 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Curry, the Golden State Warriors two-time NBA Most Valuable Player is a contender in the tournament. He is considered among the favorites. Harrah’s and Harveys Race and Sportsbook have installed him at 15-1 odds along with San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski and former Sharks star Jeremy Roenick.

Judge's decision in South Lake Tahoe courtroom calls California law unconstitutional

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One could feel the air let out of a South Lake Tahoe courtroom as visiting Judge Gary Mullen read his decision to the five defendants, their five lawyers and family members in attendance, one that tossed out their request to drop murder charges against all of the suspects in the robbery and murder in 2016 of Dennis Wright.

Judge Mullen declared California Senate Bill 1437 unconstitutional. The bill was signed by then-California Governor Jerry Brown in September 2018 and changed the liability for accomplices to felony murder.

All okay after vehicle vs. pedestrian collision in Strawberry

STRAWBERRY, Calif. - A Sunday afternoon collision between a pedestrian and a Chevy Tahoe left a vehicle overturned and a pedestrian with very minor injuries near Strawberry, west of Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe residents on Western Nevada College Dean's List

Western Nevada College has released the names of their Fall 2018 Dean's List, one of its largest dean’s lists in years. On the list are 373 students, accounting for 31.1 percent of the college’s full-time students.

Also on the list are residents of South Lake Tahoe, Marla Bay, Zephyr Cove and Stateline. To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Public memorial for Judge Terrence Finney in South Lake Tahoe Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A public memorial for the first superior court judge in the community, the Honorable Terrence M. Finney, will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Department 3 of the South Lake Tahoe courthouse.

Finney passed away on November 7, 2018 at the age of 84.

City's flags at half-staff fo honor former South Lake Tahoe councilwoman and mayor

Former City of South Lake Tahoe Councilmember Judy Brown passed away at Renown Medical Center on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

All City flags are lowered to half-mast through Friday, December 14 in honor of her dedicated service to the City. Brown served on the City Council from 1996-2000 and 2000-2004 and was appointed mayor during her term. She was also an active member of the Planning Commission since 2011 and most recently, its chairperson.

Fundraising site opens after former Mayor Judy Brown passes away

Judy Brown, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident, former mayor, Planning Commission chair, local business owner, wife, mother, grandmother and friend died on December 8, 2018 at Renown Hospital in Reno. She was 72 years old.

More details for family, friends and colleagues will be coming from the family but in the meantime they have opened a fundraising campaign to assist Judy's husband Alan Brown with immediate bills left after Judy's medical issues this year.

Parents show up at school board meeting to voice Sierra House fire concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Attending the December 6 special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board were concerned parents, teachers and staff from Sierra House Elementary, enough to fill the room and into the hallway. They were there to ask the Board why the school was reopened just two days after the November 11 fire that took out a hallway, a reading room, teacher's room and caused damage to ducts and panels above the ceiling.

Had it not been for the quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District the discussion would be about replacing the 44-year-old South Lake Tahoe school rather than the processes involved to get it cleaned up and opened in just two days.

South Lake Tahoe girl helps ease pain of young Camp Fire victims

Donations have been transported by the car and truck load from South Lake Tahoe to Paradise, full of help for the victims of the Camp Fire which, to date, has destroyed 9,700 homes, businesses and other structures and burned 149,500 acres.

One of those loads was delivered by 13-year-old Jaymee Levin.

Missing Placerville boy spotted in South Lake Tahoe

A 13-year-old boy missing from the Placerville area was spotted near Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, but by the time law enforcement he had left the area.

Patrick Siebenthaler ran away after school on September 24,. 2018 He has done that before and normally returned after a day or two, but this time he hasn't been seen or heard from in over five weeks. Patrick fled without having any extra clothing, money or supplies to utilize as one may do when it's planned.

Search underway in Alpine County for missing hiker

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Search and rescue teams were out in Alpine County on Tuesday, searching for a missing hiker.

55-year-old Bradford Dozier was last seen in Sacramento on Saturday morning. Family members said he was heading to the Carson Pass area to go hiking and hasn't been heard from since.

Dozier's car was found on Sunday at the Evergreen Trailhead but his actual destination is unknown.

Two new judges for El Dorado County Superior Court

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two attorneys with local ties will soon be sworn in as El Dorado County superior court judges, filling a gap that brought in visiting judges to local courts for over a year.

Mike McLaughlin, partner at Feldman McLaughlin Thiel LLP, will become the new judge of Department 4 in South Lake Tahoe, and Jamie Pesce, a deputy district attorney, will be assigned to family law in Department 5 of the local court system, located in the main Courthouse in Placerville.

LTCC becomes the only college in the country to offer free bi-state tuition program

Motorized scooter riders see change of laws in California in 2019

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of the banning of electric scooters in many cities, Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a bill that mandates helmets for users only if they are under the age of 18 and if the scooter goes above 15 miles per hour.

The bill, authored by Republican Assemblyman Heath Flora of Ripon, was written to encourage scooter use to alleviate congestion on the state's roads and meet climate change goals of reducing car emissions.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.

New Meyers Advisory Council focus of community meeting

Lisa Maloff pledges money to get STEAM and gardening programs for LTUSD

Mrs. Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe, has offered a generous donation for STEAM and Garden Education for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). In the works since April, the LTUSD Board of Trustees today heard plans from two parents who have been working on the donation and ideas for implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) and gardening education in all South Lake Tahoe schools.

Police ask for public's help in locating missing person in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 35-year-old man who was headed to South Lake Tahoe (SLT) to live and study has not been heard from, and his parents and the SLT Police Department are asking for the public's help in locating him.

Alexander Farquhar Mackenzie left his parent's house in Salinas, California in May of this year in a rental car, telling his parents he was headed for South Lake Tahoe.

Dozens of small cell towers planned around Lake Tahoe Basin

As most people have experienced, cell phone coverage around Lake Tahoe can be trying at times, especially during heavy tourist days when thousands of extra users are in the area. Combine that with over half of homes ditching their land-lines and relying only on cell phones, demand has greatly increased.

Lake Tahoe cell phone coverage may soon be improved as Verizon is working with Liberty Utilities and NV Energy and local governments to place small, seven-foot, grounded cell towers on top of current power poles on all sides of the lake.

VHR deadline for bear box installation extended

Citing a lack of bear boxes and contractors to install them, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has extended the July 31, 2018 deadline their installation at vacation home rentals (VHRs) for two months.

The new ordinance that went into effect December 22, 2017 gave homeowners of the VHRs until this month to have them installed. While hundreds have been installed, there are still many waiting to get them in the ground and they are on waiting lists.

Joe Pavelski holds onto lead at American Century Championship

STATELINE, Nev. - San Jose Shark star Joe Pavelski kept his lead during round two of the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe Saturday, finishing his round one point ahead of three-time champion and former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder.

Mulder shot a 5-under-par 67 Saturday to close the gap with Pavelski who shot par.

Former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo, who was at 4:1 odds to win, is sitting at third as they prepare for the final round at Edgewood Tahoe on Saturday.

San Jose Sharks Captain Joe Pavelski leads American Century Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - The leader after the first round of play in the American Century Championship is San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski. He scored a 25 in the modified stableford scoring system used in the 29th annual tournament.

Former quarterback (and former Incline Village resident) Trent Dilfer is one point off the lead. He is coming off left knee surgery an feeling pretty good. "I didn't realize how much pain I'd been in the last five, six, seven years playing golf," he said.

10th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Classic to bring athletic greats to Truckee

NFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players, other sports and entertainment celebrities will gather July 8-9 at Schaffer's Mill Golf Club in Truckee to pay tribute to former Oakland Raider Gene Upshaw. The tournament raises funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injury research and, to date, they've raised close to $1.5 million.

Each year this tournament runs the week before the American Century Championship held in South Lake Tahoe, something Upshaw played in while he was alive.

Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver along US50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 33-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died after being struck by a vehicle on US 50 between Grocery Outlet and the Upper Truckee Bridge as he crossed the highway.

Crews from Security Paving, the Caltrans contractor working in the area, arrived at the job site at 5:38 a.m. Wednesday and found the body off the side of the road and called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

SLTPD arrived first but turned the incident over to California Highway Patrol (CHP) as it was construction zone incident. Work had not yet begun for the day.

Steph Curry returns to Lake Tahoe for American Century Championship

Steph Curry, fresh off the Golden State Warrior's third championship in four years, is heading to Lake Tahoe to vie for a different title, one at the American Century Championship July 10-15. He had a final round 68 last year that included 28 of his total 60 Stableford points to finish fourth.

AAUW-South Lake Tahoe awards two scholarships

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women AAUW) recently awarded two $1500 scholarships to women graduating from Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) who are going on to further their education at the college or university level.

The club's two winners this year are both from South Lake Tahoe.

Hannah Brown attained an Associate’s degree in math and Spanish from LTCC and will be attending UC Davis to major in computer science.
