Their parking on a highway is dangerous, and the California Highway Patrol is trying deter parking to encourage them to park where legal.

Possible new home for South Lake Tahoe homeless warming room
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 5:22pmAt the last count there were 82 homeless persons and ten homeless families living in South Lake Tahoe, and to help protect them during the winter, the Lake Tahoe Homeless Coalition has operated a Warm Room in the city.
They too are now homeless and asked the City Council on Tuesday to move into the city-owned building at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard, the former home of Unity at the Lake church.
2017 Tahoe in Depth issue covers multiple Lake Tahoe challenges and actions

Caltrans testing cannons near Echo Summit Tuesday

Some loud booms will be heard around the South Shore during testing.

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was installing new cannons to replace the 25-year-old equipment on Flagpole Mountain, home to the Echo Summit avalanche control operations.

Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction

Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.
Highway 50 roadwork in South Lake Tahoe extended through November
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/31/2017 - 8:24amConstruction on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe will be extended through the end of November, weather permitting. The work remaining includes the installation of new traffic signals at Tahoe Keys Boulevard and 3rd Street.
Expect lane closures and extra traffic on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue during these final stages.
The project is a three-year one and includes water quality improvements, a new stop light at Lodi, timed traffic lights from the Y to Trout creek, bike lanes, bus pull outs, sidewalks and retaining walls.
New gas tax starts November 1 in California; Prices up 12 cents/gallon
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/29/2017 - 5:50pmHigher fuel taxes are set to start November 1, 2017, raising the base gasoline excise tax from 18 cents to 30 cents per gallon. Senate Bill 1 was signed into law by California Jerry Brown and contains other increases that will cover the state's transportation needs for the next ten years with an extra $52 billion in revenue.
Other funds are coming from a new transportation improvement fee based on vehicle value, and paying off past transportation loans, Caltrans savings, and new charges on diesel fuel and zero-emission vehicles.

Upcoming North Lake Tahoe grinding and paving projects
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/25/2017 - 3:02pmSeveral sections of North Lake Tahoe highways are scheduled to be worked on over the next nine days, beginning Thursday in Tahoe City.
Grinding and paving work on Highway 28 at the Tahoe City “Wye” is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, requiring reversing one-way traffic control on both Highways 28 and 89 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the contractor, Martin Brothers, will be working on Highway 267 in Kings Beach. There will be one-way traffic control there as well from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with up to 20-minute delays.

The stretch of Highway 50 from Mt. Ralston Road to Echo Summit now has signage at each end commemorating the fallen fire fighter who worked winters at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Expect lane closures near the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue. No detours will be in place so expect heavy traffic and delays.
Caltrans announced Tuesday they are working hard to finish this stretch of the new storm drain system project, suggesting drivers to plan ahead and #BeWorkZoneAlert.
"Thanks for your patience as we work to help protect Lake Tahoe's water and keep it clean for generations to come," said Caltrans.
Kings Beach Revitalization Project comes to a close, more projects planned for area

I-80 ramp closures in Truckee this week

The on-ramp to westbound I-80 from Donner Pass Road will remain open. Motorists can continue on westbound I-80 to the next exit at Donner Lake Road to reverse direction and access Donner Pass Road from eastbound Interstate 80.

Highway 50 will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Dunlap Drive to Winnemucca Avenue on Friday to allow for paving and striping from about 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The work again will be dependent on weather and temperature conditions.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday, and around the clock until 11:00 a.m. Friday each week, Highway 50 (Lake Tahoe Boulevard) will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Dunlap Drive to Winnemucca Avenue to accommodate grinding and paving operations. Motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
Expect these lane restrictions to be in place until Friday, October 13.
Expect delays with start of new road project at Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/07/2017 - 11:20pmWork has begun on a stretch of State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay to replace a retaining wall and the extend an existing barrier slab and rail.
The contractor, Stewart Engineering, Inc. has established a staging area at the Eagle Falls parking area on the southbound side of the road. Visitors to the area should note that most, if not all, of the parking spots will be blocked by equipment.
Caltrans said work will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be reversing one-way traffic control so motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

Woman injured after crashing into traffic signal
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/02/2017 - 5:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE - A local woman was injured Saturday afternoon and she crashed her van into the light signal at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Takela Drive.
The unidentified woman was transported to Barton Hospital with serious injuries.
A traffic signal was knocked off the pole, leaving it dangling over Lake Tahoe Blvd. Caltrans is on their way to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento to fix the light.
Beacon light at Camp Richardson here to stay, for now

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12:01 a.m., contractor Security Paving Inc. may reduce the highway to one open lane iSn each direction around the clock until 11 a.m. on Fridays.
Beginning Sept. 10, work will be around the clock from midnight Sunday to 11 a.m. Friday each week, with weekends free of construction. Motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
Choices limited on what to do with California's 102M dead trees
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/29/2017 - 2:02pmThere are now an estimated 102 million dead trees in California, creating unhealthy forests that are prone to major and catastrophic wildfires. Even though funds are being allocated to remove many of them, where will that timber go?
For now, there aren’t many options because of what has transpired from the government since 1968.
In that year the Secretaries of Agriculture and Interior issued orders restricting the volume of timber that could be harvested from Federal lands in the West. It was updated in 1969 to limit the total harvested to 350-million-board-feet.

Approval granted for removal of dead and dying trees in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/24/2017 - 5:51pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board on Wednesday approved an emergency permit for Caltrans to remove hazardous dying trees along its highways and rights of way in the Tahoe Basin.
California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a tree mortality emergency in October 2015 because of widespread tree die-offs after several years of severe drought. There are now an estimated 102 million dead trees in California, with the greatest tree mortality in the Southern Sierra Nevada.

Caltrans finishes $62M Lake Tahoe West Shore project on Hwy 89
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/18/2017 - 4:09pmWork to rebuild State Highway 89 along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe from Tahoma just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City is now complete, Caltrans announced today. It also came in $8,000,000 under budget.
Construction on the project started in 2012 when a contractor for Southwest Gas began relocating gas lines that were in conflict with the new drainage systems to be built. That work was completed in 2014. Caltrans’ contractor, Road and Highway Builders, began drainage work in 2013 and started roadwork in 2014.
Caltrans to close freeway ramps in Truckee for maintenance work
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/14/2017 - 5:57pmCaltrans is alerting motorists traveling through the Truckee area that the on ramp from southbound Highway 89 to eastbound Interstate 80, as well as the off ramp from Interstate 80 to Central Truckee, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 16 for maintenance work.
The ramps sustained damage during the past winter’s storms. Preventing further erosion of the ramp’s pavement and shoulders will help mitigate damage anticipated from future winter storms.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be doing overnight Work to repair rough spots in the roadway Monday night through Friday morning. They will be doing grinding and paving work on U.S. Highway 50 on the section of the roadway that descends after Echo Summit into the Tahoe Basin.

We were successfully awarded $2.9 million in federal funds to complete all of the funding for the Sierra Blvd. Streetscape project-we are now 100% funded through construction. Kudos to Stan Hill with the City for his excellent grant application. Per Jim Marino, Asst.
