Boulders along Highway 50 by Cave Rock will soon be removed as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins to reinforce a destabilized slope along the roadway at Logan Creek on Lake Tahoe's East Shore.

Work will begin June 7.

Numerous boulders the size of large vehicles rolled down the slope several times during the past winter, bringing NDOT to add a concrete barrier and reduce the traffic to one northbound land. Luckily, no vehicles have been involved in the slides, and no injuries reported.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service plan on continuing prescribed fire operations April 3, weather and conditions permitting.

Scheduled operations are near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and Meyers.

Drivers between South Lake Tahoe and Spooner Summit may once again travel along Highway 50 after it was closed for several days after boulders larger than passenger vehicles rolled down the hill onto the road just north of Cave Rock.

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reopened the road with one lane of traffic moving in each direction.

No vehicles were involved in the slides, and no injuries were reported.

A flood warning remains in effect for South Lake Tahoe until Wednesday evening. One storm system will be leaving the area as a new atmospheric river heads into the region on Thursday.

Flood watch warning is now in place for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to Friday at 4:00 a.m. This will be combine with a winter storm warning starting at the same time and going until Saturday at 1:00 a.m. Those warnings will be replaced with a dry period over the weekend with sunny clear skies and temperatures into the 40s and 50s.

The rain has caused some road closures:

11:39 a.m. update - Traffic is moving with escorts through accident areas so emergency personnel can finish clean up of accidents.

10:30 a.m. update: The highway closure is now from Zephyr Cove to Elks Point and it will continue to be closed for an undetermined time.

Highway 50 from Round Hill to Cave Rock has been shut down due to multiple accidents caused by icy roads.

According to Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal of Tahoe Douglas Fire, Nevada Highway Patrol shut the road down at 8:45 a.m. Friday after there were several collisions near the Presbyterian Conference Grounds.

Continuing prescribed fire operations by the North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, November 15 in several areas around Lake Tahoe.

If conditions are favorable, buring is scheduled at Stillwater Cover near Crystal Bay, off Logan Creek Drive, near Cave Rock, Zephyr Heights and Round Hill, and on urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort, off North Upper Truckee Road and near Big Meadow off Highway 89 South. Operations will continue as conditions allow.

Many are ready for this election to be over the national level with the negativity surrounding the campaigns. On a local level there are several choices before voters.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Travelers going through the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe should anticipate minor delays as construction crews enter the final phase of construction on a $6 million safety project. There will be work zone traffic pattern changes as both lanes of the roadway are repaved, spraying of concrete continues as well as other final tasks. The project is expected to be completed by October.

As the annual Shakespeare Festival on the North Shore winds down, organizers want to alert Bard fans of possible delays on getting to the event at Sand Harbor, both from the north and the south ends of the lake.

Construction has begun on Highway 28, and continues on Highway 50 around Cave Rock and on Spooner Summit. Lane closures are involved, so allow extra time to get to the the park which is located just south of Incline Village.

The Douglas County School District has found a buyer for the old Kingsbury Middle School which had been on the market since 2012. The school board voted to accept a $3.15 million offer on the property from Lake Parkway LLC, a corporation listed in Zephyr Cove, Nev.

DCSD closed Kingsbury Middle School on 1900 Echo Drive in Stateline in the 2008-2009 school year due to low enrollment at the schools at the lake. The school site had an original price tag of $4 million.

"This is wonderful news," said DCSD Board President Ross Chichester.

The man whose unconscious body was found on June 25 near a jet ski on Lake Tahoe has been identified.

A passerby found 21-year-old Jawahar Kaliyamurthy floating near the unoccupied jet ski east of Meeks Bay at about 11:38 a.m. on the 25th, called for help, pulled the man from the water and began CPR.

Three agencies are working to find out why a man died in Lake Tahoe this weekend.

On June 25, deputies El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to the call of an unresponsive man in the water east of Meeks Bay. There was an unoccupied jet ski nearby.

According to Bernadette Smith of Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the unidentified man was loaded onto the Placer county Marine 6 and transported to Cave Rock, CPR in progress during the ride, but without success. He was pronounced deceased.

The 2nd annual Rock Tahoe Half-Marathon heads to Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 18. The 2,000 spots for runners are already full, filling up three weeks before the event. The course takes the participants down 1,000 feet in elevation as they pass some of Tahoe's iconic views.

Motorists should keep in mind the Cave Rock area construction project as they plan their travel around Lake Tahoe not only over the Memorial Day weekend, but during all holidays and this summer. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is reminding motorists to anticipate minor travel delays.

“We encourage everyone to visit and enjoy Lake Tahoe,” NDOT District Engineer Thor Dyson explained. “But, with many visitors traveling to Lake Tahoe for holidays such as Fourth of July, drivers should plan a little extra travel time for road improvements being made in the Cave Rock area.”

Both lanes of traffic through the Cave Rock Tunnel are now being moved to the mountain side lane as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins their $6 million enhancement of the tunnels, retaining of falling rock and lane improvements.

The proposal to install a 60-foot-long tunnel extension at Cave Rock this summer is the subject of a public hearing by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

The agency's hearings officer will meet with all interested parties, public included, on the Nevada Department of Transportation's project to create a safer tunnel due to the falling rock and deteriorating hillside on the westbound lanes of Highway 50 entering the tunnel.

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Nevada Department of Transportation crews started the dismantling process of the large boulder that fell onto Highway 50 northeast of the Cave Rock tunnel Saturday night.

The large boulder rolled onto the roadway, causing damage to the road and guardrail, but no injuries or vehicle damage, at approximately 6:30 p.m. February 20. The size of the boulder is estimated at nine feet wide by six feet high.

There are proposed amendments to the South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rental ordinance, ones that came about because of feedback from VHR permit applicants and those enforcing the ordinance.

The most recent VHR ordinance change took effect on October 1, 2015. Since then, there have been over 300 inspections scheduled, including new homes and renewals.

According to Amanda Nolan, the City's VHR Clerk, many of the properties inspected so far have required owners to make corrections to address inspection requirements.

The October 1, 2015 ordinance called for:

A large boulder rolled onto Highway 50 Saturday evening on the Lake Tahoe east shore, closing one eastbound lane of traffic on the west side of the Cave Rock tunnel.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, just after 6:00 p.m., several rocks fell onto the roadway, the largest too heavy to be moved by one of their patrol cars. They are now waiting for a bulldozer to clear the roadway.

NHP estimates for all to be cleared by 9:15 p.m.

The date was October 14, 1975. Tropper Gary Gifford was on duty for the Nevada Highway Patrol when the First National Bank of Nevada in Round Hill was robbed. The armed gunman escaped and left by car on Highway 50 towards Cave Rock. At noon, just before the tunnel, Tropper Gifford pulled over the robbery suspect.

There was an altercation between Gifford and the suspect when the tropper was shot and killed. The suspect was able to force another man to drive him around the lake to Kings Beach where he took four people hostage. Later that evening the suspect surrendered to authorities.

Imagine taking part in a race that you don't know when it starts, you don't know where to go or what you'll be doing at what time.

But, you need to be prepared for everything and pack accordingly.

There are nine small lightning caused fires currently burning in or around the Lake Tahoe Basin, the largest one is one-half acre in size.

Staff from the U.S. Forest Service is at each scene with firefighters from the Tahoe-Douglas and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection Districts, working to extinguish them. Most of the fires are single-tree fires with some ground fire.

Winds are calm, and the Lake Tahoe Basin received substantial rainfall in the area of the fire starts, so the rate of spread is low.
