On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Nevada Department of Transportation crews started the dismantling process of the large boulder that fell onto Highway 50 northeast of the Cave Rock tunnel Saturday night.
The large boulder rolled onto the roadway, causing damage to the road and guardrail, but no injuries or vehicle damage, at approximately 6:30 p.m. February 20. The size of the boulder is estimated at nine feet wide by six feet high.
NDOT contracted a hydraulic hammer to break apart the boulder into segments which could be safely removed by truck. They expect the boulder to be fully removed by the end of the day but the sections of the roadway damaged by the fall still need to be repaired.
Through the end of the week, US 50 in the Glenbrook area will remain open to both directions of travel, but lanes will be reduced and minor travel delays are to be expected as the roadway is repaved.
Drive safely in the area, and plan a little additional travel time.
