Crews working to get Sierra House Elementary open by start of school
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/13/2019 - 11:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018, caused extensive damage and forced students to spend the school year at other campuses in South Lake Tahoe - 4th and 5th graders at South Tahoe Middle School and K-3 at the old Al Tahoe campus. With the beginning of school just around the corner, crews have been beefed up and are working overtime to try and get the doors open for all students on August 26.

South Tahoe Middle School is holding "Kickstart" on Thursday, August 22. It will be a day dedicated to giving out class schedules, taking school pictures, getting identification cards and tables full of information from the school and community for students and parents.

Opinion: Walking a tightrope between affordable and unsafe housing
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/08/2019 - 10:51amLast week, a local motel owner told guests there would be no housekeeping because they didn’t have enough staff due to the local housing shortage. However, the issue is fast becoming not only one of supply, but also one of quality. Many homes that fit the "local's" price range are older buildings - built in the 1970s or earlier. Just like our roads, some of these older buildings are in a state of disrepair and as we know with our roads, patchwork repairs only last so long.

Driver of motorcycle on Kingsbury Grade dies in crash, passenger sent to hospital
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/29/2019 - 11:31amUPDATE 8/3/19 3:30 p.m.: A Fallon, Nevada man has been identified as the victim in Sunday's fatal motorcycle crash on Kingsbury Grade.
Just before 8:00 p.m. on July 28 Nevada Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash on SR-207/Kingsbury Grade one mile up from Lake Tahoe at Douglas County Mile Marker 1.
Preliminary investigation shows that a black 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound on SR-207. For an unknown reason, the motorcycle overturned and both the driver and passenger were ejected.

Stateline residents arrested after a months-long narcotics investigation
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/18/2019 - 5:19pmSTATELINE, Nev. - Two local residents were arrested early Tuesday after a months-long narcotics investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team and State of Nevada Tri Net Investigators.
Timothy Hecox, 61-years-old, and Holly Anderson, 50-years-old, both of Stateline, Nevada, were arrested after a search warrant was served at 169 Faris Court #8 on July 17, 2019. They were booked for trafficking of narcotics and several other drug-related charges.
South Lake Tahoe Labor Day traffic test to include full road closures
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/17/2019 - 5:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In an attempt to address traffic concerns on side roads in the Meyers area, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and El Dorado County (EDC) conducted a test and put up two road closures on Sunday, July 7, 2019.
Barriers were placed at the intersections of Highway 50 and both Sawmill and North Upper Truckee roads in an attempt to keep westbound holiday traffic out of the neighborhoods and on the highway. In addition, they were also evaluating the traffic backup on both roads and the routing of traffic by directional apps like Waze and Google.
Fire burning near Indian Creek Reservoir in Alpine County

There is a wildland fire burning in Alpine County off Airport Road west of Indian Creek Reservoir.
The Alpine County Sheriff's office has evacuated Indian Creek Campground as a precaution and the recreation area is closed until further notice. Airport Road is closed from SR89 to Diamond Valley Road.
At this time there is no cause known and the size of the fire has not been released.
Hike with a ranger this summer in Lake Tahoe

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) it partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort once again 'invites the public to 'Hike with a Ranger' beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.
Barbara Avenue in South Lake Tahoe to remain closed
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/06/2019 - 9:02pmThe Sierra Boulevard street project is progressing and the next phase between Barbara Avenue and Alma Avenue is requiring El Dorado County to temporarily close Barbara Avenue until August 15.
The project consists of full roadway reconstruction and pedestrian and drainage improvements along Sierra Boulevard from Palmira Blvd. to Barbara Ave.
The Barbara Avenue closure is necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety. Prior to July 1 the road was kept open on weekends and other non-construction hours but that will no longer be the case.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m.to discuss approval of funds needed to get Sierra House Elementary opened by the beginning of the school year.
Since a Labor Day 2018 fire, the school which housed grades K-5 has been closed with students split between South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary.
There have been concerns in the community the school wouldn't be ready to open in August.

Arrests for robbery, extortion and drugs made after Spooner Summit incident

Arrested were Damien Malone Munoz, 21, Anthony Gabriel Munoz, 22 and Talina Hicks, 18, all from Carson City. Highway 50 westbound was closed briefly because of the incident.
Lakeside neighborhood road closures start at 6:00 a.m. on July 4

The popular private beach near the firework barges is accessible by Lakeside Park Association members and pass holders (may enter at 8:00 a.m.). Passes are available for purchase for $20 for the day (may enter at 9:00 a.m.). These passes do not allow parking and are for beach access only.
Man in custody after found running with rifle on U.S. 50 Spooner
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/30/2019 - 5:37pmWestbound Highway 50 was closed briefly at Spooner Junction early Sunday evening after a report of a man with a rifle running on the roadway. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol arrested the man at gunpoint and recovered a rifle.
The highway reopened at around 5:50 p.m. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies made a felony traffic stop shortly afterward.
It is unknown at this time if the two incidents are related.
Eldorado National Forest prescribed burn sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/30/2019 - 1:42pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eldorado National Forest crews have begun a prescribed fire on 143 acres of understory four miles northwest of Kirkwood. This fire is along the northern ridge above Caples Creek.
The resulting smoke has been seen in the southwestern portion of Lake Tahoe, drawing concern of many in the area. Smoke will continue to be seen from SR88 and Highway 50 for the next two days.
Because of the prescribed burn area, part of Hay Flat Trail will be closed.
Reuters: Sources say Eldorado Resorts clinches $18 billion cash and stock deal for Caesars

The agreement comes three months after Reuters reported that Caesars had agreed to give Eldorado access to its books under pressure from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who earlier this year was awarded seats on Caesars’ board.

Pilot full closure program on two roads in Meyers to help address traffic issues

El Dorado County Department of Transportation (EDCDOT) Director Rafael Martinez joined other staff members in presenting the traffic congestion circulation alternative to the approximately 25 people in attendance. There will be a hard closure in place on Sawmill Road near Highway 50, and on North Upper Truckee near Highway 50 during the July 4th and Labor Day holiday weekends as part of a pilot project.
Overnight closures of SR28 for final roadway striping near Incline Village

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village and the U.S. 50 junction from 8:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m. nightly June 17 and 18 as final roadway striping is placed on the highway.

It violates the requirements of the Temporary Activity Permit which both the City and TRPA are working to revise.
Fatal collision on Highway 50 near Round Hill; One arrested for suspected impairment
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/13/2019 - 6:17amUPDATE 9:50AM - There is one confirmed fatality and one arrest for impairment in the early morning two-vehicle collision on Highway 50 near Round Hill Thursday.
While the investigation is still preliminary, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Hannah DeGoey said it appears the driver of a vehicle towing a trailer was the person killed and the driver of the other vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of impairment.
The name, age and hometown of the deceased is being held pending notification of next of kin. The identity of the person arrested has not been released at this time.

The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

USFS Taylor Creek Stream Profile Chamber: Grand reopening June 7

With financial help from the Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Blue Vodka, those walking the Rainbow Trail will once again be able to get an up-close underwater view of aquatic life and the spawning Kokanee salmon at Lake Tahoe each year.
The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is holding a grand reopening celebration of the chamber with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon on Friday, June 7.

Barton Hospital nurses go out on strike

Last week, Animal Services identified a skunk on the 5600 block of Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines that tested positive for rabies. This is the second rabid skunk to be found in El Dorado County in the past six months.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call from a man at 3:20 p.m., alerting them that his car had just been stolen from the Glen Road/Pioneer Trail area. The victim had given someone a ride and needed to stop by his house and left the car running as he ran inside. He came out from his home and found both the car and rider gone.

Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues, as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

NDOT wraps up series of overnight closures of SR28 in Incline Village
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/15/2019 - 10:28amThe Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 shared used path ahead of schedule. The roadway closure allowed for installation of pre-fabricated bridge decks on the three-plus mile shared-use path under construction between southern Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park.
Both directions of SR 28 were closed overnight on May 14 and crews had planned to work to continue overnight May 15 but that has been canceled.
Kingsbury Grade to close Wednesday for continuing investigation

Rose just a few miles above Incline Village, was found. There was no identification or jewelry on the victim and investigators could tell by her clothing she may have been headed to Lake Tahoe when she was murdered.
And there was no suspect.
For over three decades, both her and her killer's identity have been unknown but with new DNA technologies, hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists, the case has been solved.

El Dorado County employment office in South Lake Tahoe closes for a few weeks
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/10/2019 - 10:08pmThe El Dorado County Employment Resource Center located in South Lake Tahoe will be closed for several weeks for needed building repairs which include mold remediation, painting and new carpeting. Originally the office, located in Suite 100 of the El Dorado Center at 3368 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, was going to be temporarily closed for just this week.
Other offices in the same building, including County Income Support and Child Welfare Services, will remain open and provide services to the public.
No closure of SR28 at Incline Village needed tonight
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/07/2019 - 7:47pmGranite Construction and Nevada Department of Transportation crews have made great progress on the bridge decks for State Route 28 shared use path project near Incline Village and the overnight closure scheduled for tonight, Tuesday, May 7, is not necessary.
Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly during the following dates:
