Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/06/2019 - 7:25pmFather John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.
He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.
300 neglected animals removed from El Dorado County property: Local shelters close to take them in
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/06/2019 - 3:52pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Officials found 300 neglected animals, including more than 100 dogs and numerous cats, birds, horses, pigeons, ducks, roosters, hens, and goats on a property in Shingle Springs on May 2, 2019.
With the extra demands on the animal shelters in transferring and caring for these animals, the shelters in South Lake Tahoe and Diamond Springs are closed through Tuesday, May 7. Over the past five days, El Dorado County Animal Services has been safely removing the animals from the Shingle Springs property.

Completion date of Fanny Bridge/ SR89 project pushed out, final stage may start in 2020
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/29/2019 - 5:29pmThe SR89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has not progressed as expected and completion will not happen in 2019 though lots of work is scheduled.
Weather, utilities and construction scheduling have put it well behind the original 2018 planned completion and now construction work will be getting off to a late start in 2019 because of high water levels at the lake and Truckee River after an above average winter of snow and rain. Crews are expecting to start around mid-June.

State Routes 28/89 (El Dorado and Placer County): Work is starting on a $1.8 million project to remove dead and dying trees from State Routes 28 and 89 in various locations of El Dorado and Placer counties. Completion is expected this fall.
Double homicide suspect in custody after South Lake Tahoe to Douglas County pursuit
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/26/2019 - 9:46pmUPDATE 8:30AM 4/27/19: An observant officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was on patrol near the Heavenly Village at approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday night when he saw a car listed on a Bay Area police "Be On The Lookout" report go through an intersection. The report said the driver was a suspect in two homicides, one in each Oakland and San Francisco.
He followed the vehicle and attempted to pull it over with the assistance of another officer, but the driver took off and a pursuit began.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long has been the joke that there are two seasons in Lake Tahoe, winter and roadwork. Both are holding up true for 2019 as we leave a long and heavy winter and prepare for several road construction projects.
On Wednesday, April 24, CalTrans is inviting the public to come out and learn about their three projects scheduled to begin on US 50 in the Lake Tahoe Basin this summer. The public meeting will be in the South Tahoe High School Student Union from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Heading to Placerville? Expect delays
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/16/2019 - 12:47pmCaltrans has started a repair project in Placerville that will require them to close some on and off ramps and lanes of Highway 50 until April 26.
The Mosquito Bridge undercrossing is being repaired and will impact travelers along the highway from Clay Street to Carson Road around the clock.
Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect lane restrictions, the Mosquito Road on- and off-ramps and the eastbound Broadway off-ramp closed around the clock until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April.
One of two lanes will be closed at all times.

Work resumes on shared use path in Incline Village along SR28

In the meantime, there will be short-term projects.

Highway reopens after another snow slide closes Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/07/2019 - 7:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Travelers over Highway 50 and Echo Summit today had some challenges, once after the road was closed for avalanche control, and a second time when a snow slide covered the road.
One person was injured when their car was involved in the snow slide. They were transferred to the hospital with non-serious injuries according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO). Another buried car had no injuries involved.
Daffodil Hill closes for the season after just one weekend

A rainy week has more than dampened spirits, it also damaged the thousands of daffodils lining the four-acre farm owned by the McLaughlin family.
City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative reach settlement

During the closed session portion of Tuesday's City Council meeting, the four councilmembers allowed to participate voted unanimously to accept the signed agreement between the City and TWC. Councilmember Cody Bass had to recuse himself from voting since he is the owner and president of TWC.

Snow slide on Echo Summit traps one, closed highway for much of the day
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/01/2019 - 3:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been closed all afternoon due to snow slides across the highway. State Route 89 around Emerald Bay is also closed due to snow slides in that area as well.
Travelers may have been hoping for an April Fools Day joke when they saw the road closures signs go up on a day free of snow showers, but it wasn't.

Pollock Pines man facing 43 years in prison after found guilty of murdering six-week-old baby

Michael Swope, 32, was convicted of second-degree murder of baby Sammy as well as three counts of felony child abuse causing great bodily injury for breaking various ribs on the baby over infant's short and traumatic life.
Lake Tahoe gas station owners pay $1M fine, face other sanctions

Azad Amiri and Sarbjit S. Kang were accused of violating multiple underground storage tank (UST) requirements at five Lake Tahoe area gas stations: 1140 Emerald Bay Road, 913 Emerald Bay Road, and 2304 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, 3208 Highway 50 in Meyers, and 8070 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach.

He will discuss topics the South Shore community is interested in including homelessness, crime trends and the most common financial scams targeting our communities and ways to avoid falling victim to scammers.
In addition, the Sheriff encourages questions from the audience on any other subjects that are of concern.
Explosion damages Delta Saloon in Virginia City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/12/2019 - 2:52pmAn explosion Tuesday morning at the historic Delta Saloon in Virginia City sent glass, brick and parts of the building into the street.
The explosion occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m. March 12.
The saloon, home of the Suicide Table, Silver Kings, and the $100000 Miners Globe, suffered extensive damage. C Street in the town was closed for a while but has reopened this afternoon.
Storey County offices were evacuated and employees moved to a safe location, but returned to work when deemed safe. The courthouse is open for normal business through the south parking lot door.
Former South Lake Tahoe resident killed in I-580 crash

On March 8 at approximately 2:25 a.m., NHP Troopers were dispatched to the scene of a single vehicle crash south of the Galena Creek Bridge, just north of the US-395 Alternate/Bowers Mansion exit.

SR-89 around Emerald Bay reopened
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/09/2019 - 5:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A main artery between the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe has been closed due to heavy snow and avalanche concerns. Caltrans has been able to clear SR-89 and it is once again open.
Another round of heavy snow on the West Shore could close it again so check http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ prior to driving.

Most schools open, chain requirements up around Lake Tahoe

The only casualty is Douglas High School in Minden which will be closed Wednesday due to lack of sufficient heating in classrooms. All other DCSD schools are open with no delays in transportation.

California Supreme Court puts an end to the ''Loop Road' lawsuit
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/06/2019 - 12:16amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2016 a group of citizens gathered enough signatures to put a measure before the voters in November of that year to prevent the City of South Lake Tahoe from taking any action on what has been known as the Loop Road project (though the official name is the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project) without first getting approval by the voters.
Today the California Supreme Court put an end to that measure.

Caltrans hopes to get I80 open late Wednesday: Amtrak trains on the move again
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 6:33pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Passengers on two Amtrak trains heading through the Sierra on Tuesday evening had some excitement on their trips after a plow train was derailed near Soda Springs, fell through a trestle and blocked the tracks.
The east bound train with 155 passengers on board slept in the heated train, then resumed their trip to Chicago at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday after rotary plows cleared he tracks. Their trip puts them in the Windy City 16 hours behind schedule.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was found in drinking water wells in South Lake Tahoe near the "Y" in 1989, and it remains in the groundwater today, forming a containment plume from the intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89 and heading toward Lake Tahoe through the Tahoe Keys.

Schools open for Lake Tahoe Unified students, Tahoe Truckee closed, Douglas on delay
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 7:15amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is NOT a snow day for students of Lake Tahoe Unified School District in South Lake Tahoe, but other students are off on Wednesday, February 27.
Tahoe Truckee Unified School District on the North Shore is closed.
For Douglas County schools at the lake, start time is a 90-minute delay. School buses will stop at main bus stops only for all lake schools (ZCES, GWHS) 90 minutes later than regularly scheduled.
Incline Village schools are on a two-hour delay and will not be the normal early release.
