SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the news hit that the Sacramento Region was moving out of the stay-at-home order Tuesday evening, the announcement caught many by surprise, especially those businesses that had been closed since it went into effect December 10, 2020.

With a steady increase in confirmed cases over the last few weeks combined with the 4th of July influx of visitors, the County's Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams is looking at the possibility of more restrictive measures for businesses and the public.

Washoe County Marine 9 rescues couple from Lake Tahoe

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Washoe County deputies on board Marine 9 found a couple clinging to a deflated raft on Lake Tahoe around 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

Deputies aboard the boat were patrolling just northwest of the Thunderbird Lodge on the east shore when they spotted a number of items, including paddles and shoes, floating on the lake.

Man rescued from Lake Tahoe after cries for help heard from shore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe heard a man's calls for help about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, and their call to 911 brought out multiple agencies.

The 36-year-old man from Richmond, California had been kayaking about 400-500 yards offshore when his kayak starting taking on water through a hole.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

Lake Tahoe canoers stranded 3/4 mile off shore after boat takes on water

6/4/19 4:00PM Update: Details have been updated in Monday evening's incident on Lake Tahoe. The two people were in a canoe that took on water for unknown reasons about 3/4 of a mile off the shore of South Lake Tahoe. They ended up in the water and were there for about ten minutes before a local boater got to them and pulled them out of the water. The Nevada Department of Wildlife had a boat on the water that reached the group, followed by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) boat. SLTPD got the pair off the local boater's boat and returned them to El Dorado Beach.

3rd annual Tahoe Brewfest benefits Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club

They are all community minded and collaborated on Friday, December 14 to create a Tahoe batch of Resilience IPA. All proceeds from the ale will go to the Camp Fire fund.

California man drowns in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Two-person police team protecting South Lake Tahoe waters

A day on the lake is a dream come true for many, but for two South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers it's another day at the office. As they navigate Lake Tahoe they are looking for speeders, unsafe practices, life vests, drunk boaters and boat registrations, as well as responding to life threatening crashes and drownings.

"It's our little city out here," explained Steve O'Brien who has manned the South Lake Tahoe police boat for 17 summers.

Coast Guard rescues teen paddle boarders on Lake Tahoe

The Coast Guard rescued two stand-up paddle boarders who were observed struggling on Lake Tahoe, Tuesday afternoon.

A good Samaritan called 911 at approximately 4:00 p.m., reporting two teenage boys adrift and struggling to paddle upwind near Rubicon Point on Lake Tahoe, which was relayed to Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe watchstanders.

A Station Lake Tahoe 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched to the scene. The crew took the paddlers aboard and transported them to Lester Beach with no reported injuries.

Over 3,000 attend 2nd annual Tahoe Brewfest

The weather, the venue and the crowd all combined for a successful 2nd annual Tahoe Brewfest, a fundraiser for the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club. 34 breweries gave out samples of their craft beers to the over 3,000 people who attended the event held at the Heavenly Mountain Resort California Base Lodge June 2.

Also there for the guests was Parker Bros. Root Beer, kombucha, live music from Ike and Martin, and local food vendors.

Attendees weren't just from South Lake Tahoe as there were many from out-of-town, including visitors from Chicago and Whistler, Canada.

Off-duty firefighters save life of man who fell off kayak in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is alive today thanks to efforts of rescuers who were on the beach of Tahoe Beach Retreat on Thursday, May 10, when he went underwater after being on a kayak.

At 2:46 p.m., a call was made to 911 about a drowning man in the lake. When the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived three minutes later, two off-duty firemen were on the scene already, along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

Cold Water Brewery staff creates special brew for International Women's Day

Its an annual tradition at Cold Water Brewery, creating a special brew made by the female staff on International Women's Day.

The business, created and owned by long time South Lake Tahoe local Debbie Brown, had a day long event for the female staff, starting out with breakfast and ending hours later with the brew "Hey Girl Hey Double IPA" fermenting.

As members of the Pink Boot Society, the Cold Water Brewery used a hop blend put together by the group which was created to assist, inspire and encourage women beer industry professionals to advance their careers through education.

South Lake Tahoe fire stations stocked with loaner life jackets

The use of life jackets saves lives, especially on Lake Tahoe where Cold Water Shock can kill a person in minutes.

It has been a deadly year on the lake, and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) department has started a new program to help save lives in the future.

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has partnered with SLTFR in making life jackets available to the public on a loan basis. They have infant, child and adult sizes.

Local food pairings a hit at sold-out Sample the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you waited to the last minute to purchase tickets for the 8th annual Sample the Sierra you were out of luck on Saturday at Bijou Community Park. The popular festival of food, wine and beer sold out all pre-sale tickets prior to the event, and sold out of tickets at the gate just after opening, much to the disappointment of many.

1,500 full tasting tickets and 50 children tickets were sold. Those lucky enough to get in moved from booth to booth, each with either a wine, beer or alcohol paired with food, or a local artisan and their wares.

Mocktails added to the mix at Cocktails for a Cause

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Revelers will have double the number of drinks to choose from at the eighth annual Cocktails for a Cause fundraiser on Wednesday, October 4. This is because each mixologist will be crafting both a mocktail and a cocktail.

Longest Day of Golf nets SLT Cancer League over $9,400

Each year the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe (Loyal Order of Moose #1632) hosts the Longest Day of Golf at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League and today they celebrated their effors, $9,462. Since 2006, golfers in the day long event have raised $125,328.82 for the non-profit to use towards transportation and grants for local cancer patients.

the father of a University of Reno football player who drowned in Lake Tahoe wants his son’s death to send a powerful message of safety on the water.

Marc Ma, 20, was recovered in the water off the Homewood shore last week, after going missing in June 2016 during a paddleboarding trip with friends.

Man dies after falling from kayak in Lake Tahoe

A 41-year-old male died in Lake Tahoe Tuesday afternoon after he fell off a kayak near Beach Drive in the Tahoe Keys.

The victim's wife saw him fall in when the man was overtaken by cold water at about 3:30 p.m.

The unidentified man was brought into the shore where CPR was initiated. Emergency crews were on the scene and the man was transported to Barton.

He was not wearing a life jacket.

Small fire and jet ski accident keeping fire and police busy in South Lake Tahoe

The long 4th of July holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe got off to a busy start Saturday with a water rescue and fire.

A boater saw smoke coming from the hillside near Heavenly, called it in from their location off the Ski Run Marina at 1:29 p.m. and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police combed the streets in the area to try and locate the source. The fire was spotted on U.S. Forest Service land off Keller Road in between Ruby Way and Wildwood Ave.

Thinning ice around Lake Tahoe becoming a safety concern for humans and pets

Warming temperatures and the arrival of spring bring not only flowers and the appearance of grass to the Lake Tahoe Basin, but they also bring dangerous thin ice.

In an incident Friday, a local woman was out walking two dogs when they ran onto the ice which broke, and both dogs fell into the cold water at Cove East near the Tahoe Keys. With assistance by a nearby paddle boarder the dogs were rescued, but this brings to light how serious the thinning ice can be.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue saves dogs from icy water

Not only humans are rescued by firefighters, a fact two lucky dogs can attest to. On Saturday, January 28, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to the end of Venice Drive near where the Truckee River meets the lake after a call went into dispatch about two dogs who fallen into the icy water.
