Reno-Tahoe area no longer in the running to host 2030 Winter Olympics
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/12/2018 - 10:56pmOn Monday, the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition (RTWGC) announced it has officially declined an invitation to bid for a future Winter Olympics. With their departure, Salt Lake City and Denver remain as the last two selected finalists by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to be a future bid city.
They had a deadline of November 9, 2018 to submit responses to a detailed workbook covering the areas of bid vision, venue planning, transportation planning, security, budgets and public engagements among other topics.
Cannabis ordinance up for vote at Thursday's Planning Commission
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/08/2018 - 12:41pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission are expected to vote on the new cannabis ordinance during their meeting on Thursday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m.
The new ordinance will repeal and replace Article X of the City Code.
With what looks a City Council with three new members, the ordinance will most likely go before them during their first meeting on December 11, 2018. If Cody Bass, the president of Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and South Lake Tahoe's medical dispensary, holds on to the third council seat he will have to recuse himself from the discussion and vote.

High pressure will remain over the eastern Pacific through next week, blocking storms and precipitation from reaching the Sierra and western Nevada. Temperatures will remain warm through the weekend with increasing winds for Sunday, followed by a cooling trend next week as dry cold fronts pass through from the north.
Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 14
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/02/2018 - 9:01amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year once again when Christmas Tree permits go on sale at local Forest Service offices. With a limit of 2,00 permits there is no telling when they'll sell out.
Starting November 14, 2018, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin selling the $10 permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.
Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe as weather permits

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and a Fire Weather Watch from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe set to resume

SPECIAL EVENT - U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road to Carson Road in Camino: Eastbound motorists can expect the left turn lanes to be closed at 5 Mile Road, lower Carson Road and upper Carson Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 21 and Saturday, October 27 for Apple Hill season traffic. Motorists will be directed to Exit 54/Cedar Grove to access Carson Road.

What does winter have in store for Lake Tahoe and the West?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/19/2018 - 10:10pmWith the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center report released Thursday, it looks like Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada will be warmer than average and experience an average precipitation year.
A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States this winter according to the report. In the U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February, above-average temperatures are most likely across the northern and western U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.
Additionally, a weak El Nino has a 70 to 75 percent chance of developing.

Smoke will likely be present.
A) Along lakeside of Hwy 89, north of General Creek, 17 acres of understory will be burned by California State Parks. Duration of ignition and smoke production is one week with smoke expected to travel northeast.

These shutoffs will affect about 70,000 customers.
South Lake Tahoe is served by Liberty Utilities and not part of the utility company's plan to start proactively shutting off power for safety as early as 5 p.m. Sunday and continuing through the evening.

region, which will bring chances for light rain and mountain obscurations in the eastern Sierra. Gusty east-northeasterly winds as high as 60 kts are expected over the Sierra Sunday evening into Monday morning, as well as the possibility of mountaintop turbulence west of the Sierra crest.
After the cool temperatures, brisk north winds and drier conditions for the
remainder of weekend, temperatures will warm a few degrees early next week with overall drier conditions and lighter winds expected.

Liberty Utilities hosting two Lake Tahoe meetings about de-energization plans

Since July 2018, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) requires utilities to develop a plan to shut off power only as a last resort and
for a good reason in order to protect public safety.
Liberty's workshops will be to share information and answer questions about their plans. The two opportunities for the workshop are as follows:

The outdoor three-day festival will take place in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2018 on the Community Ball Fields adjacent to Lake Tahoe Community College.
El Dorado Savings Bank to become Pacific Western Bank

PacWest owns Pacific West Bank which will be the new names of El Dorado branches.
The sale is expected to become final by the first quarter of 2019. The transaction, which was approved by the PacWest and El Dorado boards of directors, is subject to customary closing conditions, including obtaining approval by El Dorado’s stockholders and bank regulatory authorities.

End of summer: Beautiful week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

The red flag warnings and lake wind advisories have expired and winds will return to more typical afternoon breezes with temperatures near normal for mid-September.
Dry conditions prevail with near normal temperatures through next week.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:
Sunday - Sunny, with a high near 71. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Parts of National Forest reopen as Boot Fire nears complete containment
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/14/2018 - 12:00pmIt has taken firefighters 10 days to contain 98 percent of the Boot Fire. The remaining open line is in the northern reaches of the fire area. Very steep slopes and thick timber made it unsafe for firefighters to work, thus delaying containment.
The fire burned 6,974 acres and at times closed US 395 between Walker and Bridgeport.
With the increased containment of the Boot Fire, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is now able to reopen some of the closed area on the Bridgeport Ranger District.
Over 100 sick birds from Nevada arrive at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/13/2018 - 6:59pmLake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) is known for their loving care of wildlife from beavers and owls to bears, but an arrival this week is unusual even for the non-profit based in Meyers near South Lake Tahoe.
Thousands of shore and water birds from Virginia, Carson and Swan Lakes in Nevada were recently stricken by Avian Type C Botulism. Most of the ill birds are Avocets and Ibis, and over 100 of them were brought to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for needed attention.
Fire damages South Lake Tahoe home during dangerous red flag conditions
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/12/2018 - 10:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Had it not been for the quick response by first responders, a fire at a South Lake Tahoe home Wednesday could have been much worse due to the dry conditions and high winds.
Lake Valley Fire Protections District (LVFPD) crews responded to a structure fire off of Lodgepole Trail. Upon arrival crews found the home in flames and additional resources were called to the scene to prevent further spread of fire to neighboring homes and vegetation.
"The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental," said Kileigh Labrado of LVFPD.
Fire dangers prompt ban on target shooting in National Forest

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, it is not prohibited but they suggest those wishing to target shoot go to one of the legal ranges in Carson City or Gardnerville for safety reasons.

The Lake Wind Advisory will run until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the Southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Wave heights will be from one to three feet with highest waves from mid-lake to east shores. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions
improve.
Hiker missing near Skunk Harbor in Lake Tahoe found Sunday morning

The caller, the man's wife, said her husband had left around noon to go hiking in the area of Skunk Harbor on the east shore of Lake Tahoe and she hadn't heard from him.

The pattern will change Tuesday as low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest. This will lead to gusty winds Tuesday to Thursday with critical fire weather conditions likely along with impacts to boating on area lakes, and air and ground travel along the Sierra Front. Get ready for jacket weather as the the first taste of autumn temperatures kicks in for the second half of next week.

Red Flag Warning - National fire danger rating system

Sadly, most fires are human-caused and completely preventable if the public would take the time to better understand conditions that are favorable for fire starts. Fire prevention is the key to keeping our communities and forests safe from wildfire.
Although fire season is now considered a year-round event, wildfires mostly occur in the late summer and early fall when temperatures are still high, humidity is low and vegetation that can feed a wildfire is extremely dry.

Dry conditions and typical breezes are expected through Saturday evening with breezy winds and critical fire weather concerns increasing for Sunday as a dry trough approaches the region. No precipitation is expected for the next week.

This effort aims to reduce distracted and reckless driving along the 615 miles of Interstate 80 from San Francisco, Calif. to the Nevada/Utah Stateline from Monday, August 27 – Labor Day, September 3, 2018, by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement, and education along this section of the National Highway System.

Week of sunny, clear skies and highs in the 80s for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/14/2018 - 10:28pmWidely scattered thunderstorms will be leaving the Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley Wednesday with no storms expected Thursday onward according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. There will be breezy and drier conditions Thursday and Friday will lead to cooler overnight lows this weekend and early next week.
Smoke from the Donnell Fire moved north along with the active weather pattern on Tuesday, resulting in the smell of smoke along with some areas of rain and thunder.

Wednesday - Sunny, with a high near 84. West wind around 5 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Sonora Pass to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City.
Keeping regions safe: Pre-positioning of firefighters this week in Lake Tahoe

Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/05/2018 - 9:11pmDue to increased Ferguson Fire activity in the areas adjacent to and on Yosemite National Park, park administrators and fire managers have made the decision to extend the current park closures indefinitely.
"The fire activity inside Yosemite National Park is dynamic," said park officials in a press release. "Over the past 48 hours, fire has impacted all of the roads used to access Yosemite Valley, burning dead and downed trees that can become very explosive and fall without warning."

Residents evacuated in Alpine County fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/02/2018 - 10:47am8:00 p.m. UPDATE: The evacuation of the Hung A Lei Ti neighborhood in Woodfords has been lifted and residents may return home. Power has been restored. According to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the fire size has been changed to 204.5 acres and containment lines are growing.

The Washoe Tribe's Hung A Lel Ti community in Woodfords has been evacuated after the Dutch Fire started in Alpine County early Wednesday morning. At last count, 244 acres have burned and the fire is 5 percent contained.
Ferguson, Carr, Perry and Whaleback Fires still burning
