Whatever it means to you, the South Lake Tahoe library keeps providing what the community needs and is always evolving to be what is needed for the future. Over the next few weeks we'll be looking into the library, its services, and how it fills a need in the community and how June's Measure L affects its future.

Hugelkultur (HOO-gul-culture) meaning hill culture or hill mound. It turns woodsy compost into the base of sustainable gardening with the use of very little water.

This word may not be in everyone's vocabulary (yet) but residents in South Lake Tahoe will soon be seeing this demonstrated if the community garden at Bijou Park is approved by the City Council.

Lake Tahoe Community College is offering interested students an opportunity to learn Spanish in Guatemala this coming summer. The program is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age, and participants do not have to be current LTCC students. All levels of Spanish language learners are welcome to experience the program.

Tahoe Arts Project, celebrating their 27th season, is pleased to present the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre on Friday October 4th at 7pm at the Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theater.

Jack Durst of Fabulous Lake Tahoe brought out his camera and interviewing skills to the third annual Tahoe Expo geotourism event this weekend at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe. The event is designed for Lake Tahoe to show its environmentally-friendly side by promoting healthy, fun activities such as biking, hiking, paddleboarding, kayaking and more.

The event featured Stand Up Paddle Yoga, an electric bike tour, information on preserving Tahoe's water quality, and a demonstration of Native American music and culture from the Washoe tribe.

Geotours of the Lake Tahoe basin will highlight environmentally friendly activities during the Tahoe Geotourism Expo held September 7 - 8, 2013. Participants can 17 different tours including an Upper Truckee River kayak tour, an Al Tahoe Heritage Walk, a Tahoe Photo Tour and Wild Mustangs in the Meadow. Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival, Tallac Historic Site. Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The festival features native arts and crafts, food vendors, basket-making, raffles, Native American dance and drum performances.

The Washoe will re-unite at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe to honor their culture and heritage during their annual Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival. Sponsored by the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, the festival will take place at the Valhalla Grand Hall and Lawn and is free to attend.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theatre Arts Department is excited to present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, “RENT,” with book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson.

Performances are June 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 8:00 p.m., with Sunday matinees on June 16 and 23 at 2:00 p.m. Set in New York City’s East Village, "RENT" follows the lives of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians as they struggle to survive and create in Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, and under the shadow of the AIDS epidemic.

Reno writer and educator, Raymond Rugg, has been selected as a panelist for the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Association's 33rd annual conference, slated for February in Albuquerque, N.M. "Acceptance of Transition" by Cathy McClelland, is the selected image featured on the Tahoe Arts and Mountain Culture website collectible sticker #6. Cathy’s depiction of a Tahoe bear standing in an aspen grove of cascading leaves is playfully symbolic of our shared acceptance of this magical season of change with our bears and wildlife. The painting speaks to the healing power of Bear, and the peace that comes from acceptance. Only 1,000 of the collectible stickers are available at local shops.

The Blue Ribbon Award nominations have been tallied, with more than 150 nominations received. Landing to the shores of Lake Tahoe this summer will be a cultural watershed of skilled Native American and indigenous carvers from around the world who are set out to build a 70-foot boat that will be taken across the globe.

The Meyers Summer Solstice Celebration “Fire” will take place on June 23, from 2-6 p.m. at 3170 Highway 50 in honor of the 5th anniversary of the Angora Fire.  Face painting, local culture and music will set the stage. Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.
