South Lake Tahoe Police looking for suspect in food tampering case
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/16/2016 - 10:09pmAn unidentified man is being sought by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) for allegedly tampering with food on at least four different occasions in the Hot Wok self-serve section of the Raley's in the Village Center at Stateline.
On Tuesday, November 15, 2016 a suspect walked into the grocery store, approached the self-serve food display, and intentionally dispensed an unknown type of contaminating substance on top of the food. The suspect then walked out of the store and left the area on foot. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.
El Dorado County still needs to count over 23,000 votes
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/16/2016 - 12:12amThe election was seven days ago, but the final ballots cast in El Dorado County have yet to be tabulated, and it might not be until Friday for the results of over 20,000 ballots are released. Another 3,000 provisional ballots should be counted by Monday.
As of 5:00 p.m. November 15, the 20,000 ballots were about to be scanned.
First year of new Incline to Sand Harbor bike trail ends; Two more years until completion

During this year's phase one, crews built an underpass beneath the highway to bring the upcoming shared use path from the east to west side of the road near the Flume Trail. In addition, work began on the three new parking areas located near the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café that will provide safer options for the one million recreationists who visit the area each year. This year’s efforts also included the relocation of a sewer (effluent) pipe near Hidden Beach.
Approval of VHR permit in South Lake Tahoe: Hours of debate, thousands of dollars
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 11:27pmRoman Kreminski lives in South Lake Tahoe and, like many others, makes his living in building "Spec Homes," the process of building and selling homes for sale without any particular buyer in mind. It used to be a good business for Kreminski based on speculation of a strong real estate market and buyers waiting to invest in paradise.
He kept about five local families working full time to build the homes.
After Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission meeting Kreminski said, "I'm done."
Are Nevada officials hauling bears away for hunting?
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 10:25pmIt's bear hunting season and that's always controversial. This year, the debate is especially fierce in Lake Tahoe where animal activists are accusing the state of Nevada of trapping bears for hunting.
In the past five years, Nevada wildlife officials have caught and moved more than 20 bears out of the Lake Tahoe area into the desert. The Nevada Wildlife Department says it's got nothing to do with hunting, but its own data raises questions about the timing of the moves.

Tahoe Douglas Fire District promotes Jim Antti

Chad Donnelly proposed the after-party each night of the annual concert to be held under a tent in the parking lot of Hard Rock Lake Tahoe from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The proposal was just in writing as neither Donnelly or representatives from the Hard Rock attended the meeting.

Pedestrian killed while crossing Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Coroner's Officer has said the victim was Daniel Wallace Curry of Carson City, Nev. He would have been 59-years-old in December.

Expect delays on I-80 as Caltrans begins grooving project
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/05/2016 - 10:10pmIf you're driving north of Lake Tahoe this month, expect delays as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) begins to groove pavement on Interstate 80 Monday, November 7. Crews will be working from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until November 23.
Additional work days may be required after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. (No work is scheduled on Veterans’ Day November 11.)

Don't Forget: Change the time, Change the battery
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/04/2016 - 7:35amDaylight Saving Time (DST) ends at exactly at 2:00 a.m. this Sunday, November 6. Turn the clocks back one hour if you live in most of the United States (most of Arizona and Hawaii don't observe DST).
The Lake Valley Fire Department is using this change in time to remind residents to also change their smoke detector batteries. The batteries should be replaced twice a year, so an easy way to remember to change them is to do it as DST begins and ends.
Meyers Community Foundation Annual Tree Lighting

December 2, 2016 - 5:00pm On Friday, Dec. 2 the Meyers Community Foundation (MCF) will hold the sixth annual Tree Lighting at 5:00 p.m. in the Divided Sky/Downtown Café parking lot. The MCF will serve popcorn, hot chocolate and other goodies.
The Christmas fire truck and Santa will return via the CALSTAR helicopter (weather and circumstance permitting). The event is free and open to the public.

Nevada population expected to grow by more than 425,000 in next 20 years

Second wettest October on record in California

The Lake Tahoe Airport on the South Shore received 7.3 inches of rain in October, just over double of the monthly average of 3.54 inches. This water is helping to fill Lake Tahoe, which rose during the wet mid-October storm by over 3 inches, adding 11 billion gallons of water to the lake.
What Denver DA wants Californians to know about legalizing marijuana

Minden resident wins iconic Nevada welcome sign

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) held a contest to find new owners, and nearly 14,500 residents entered the free raffle via phone, web site and social media, with winners selected randomly.
The four winners are from each region of the state: Northwest: Jennifer Bills (Reno), Southwest: Anna Thomas (from Minden), Northeast: Kaitlyn Tueller, Southeast: Breanna Kirkham.

Prescribed burn blamed for Little Valley Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/26/2016 - 10:58pmFire investigators say the Oct. 14 Little Valley Fire, which destroyed 23 homes, 17 outbuildings and chewed more than 2,200 acres was caused by a prescribed fire conducted earlier in the month by the Nevada Division of Forestry.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources made the report available shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, and was unavailable for comment.

"When people call us, they're having a bad day," said South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston as he started Friday's ceremony.
Sometimes there are good endings, sometimes not so good and its the captain's job to help get the team back to the station and help them regroup when the outcome of a call isn't a happy one.

Man wanted in Sacramento triple homicide may be in Reno area
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/22/2016 - 5:27pmLaw enforcement officers in the Reno-Sparks area are looking for a man wanted in connection to a triple homicide in Sacramento on October 15.
Jerod Watson, 52, is a suspect in the murder of his ex-girlfriend's mother and two adult sons. All three had been stabbed multiple times.
Watson fled Sacramento in an SUV that was stopped in Reno, but he was not inside the vehicle.
There is an active arrest warrant for homicide for Watson who is believed to still be in the Reno-Sparks area. He is described as an African American male, 5'10", 180 pounds.
New project in Truckee to bring new Marriott hotel and apartments

The hotel portion will be named Marriott SpringHill Suites and the apartments, Coburn Crossing.
The Triumph Development Hotel and Residential Project, will be laid out on over 11 acres adjacent to the Truckee Cemetery and Highway 80 on East Jiboom Street.

One of the two cases they'll hear concerns a disagreement between the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department on how to investigate a fatal shooting by an officer.

Theater program at LTCC may be discontinued; Room being made for community theater model
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/19/2016 - 12:07pmWith three productions a year, and just seven degrees issued in five years, Lake Tahoe Community College is looking at eliminating their theater program and moving toward a community theater model.
Theater staff at the college were advised on Tuesday that LTCC administration is recommending to the Board of Trustees that they’re recommending discontinuing the theater program.
Over the past 1.5 years, administrators have been going through a process that included research on program vitality at the college.

Stork has more than 15 years of experience working in human resources. She most recently served as the Vice President of Human Resources for a non-profit home health and hospice agency in Washington State.
Plane missing southwest of Lake Tahoe, overdue on trip from Idaho
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/16/2016 - 2:10pm5:00 p.m. update: According to the Acorn News in Jackson, Calif., the missing Cessna 182 is normally hangared in Amador County. Authorities Continuing Search for Missing Cessna 182. They said the plane was expected at Westover Field on Saturday.
The pilot left Idaho, headed to Jackson during a storm in the Sierra. Many pilots will take a southern route to Westover Field, which takes a plane between Highway 50 and 88. It is unknown at this time which route was taken.
Weather conditions continue to prevent search operations.

I-580 and Eastlake reopen as Little Valley Fire burns 2,000 acres; 19 homes burn
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/14/2016 - 7:31amUPDATE 1:00PM 10/15/16: The Little Valley Fire in Washoe Valley has now burned 3,460 acres with 5 percent containment. Four injuries due to smoke inhalation have been reported.
The Sierra Front Type III Incident Management Team reports that 22 residences and 17-outbuildings have been destroyed. 500 structures are still under threat.
Interstate 580 is open in both directions, as is old U.S. Highway 395. Franktown Road, the area where most of the home damage is, remains closed.
Emerald Fire burning near South Lake Tahoe consumes 210 acres, is now 80% contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/14/2016 - 7:07am8:00AM update 10/15: Highway 89 remains closed in both directions from Fallen Leaf Lake Road to Emerald Bay due to the Emerald Fire which remains 80 percent contained this morning. Acreage burned is 210 acres.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There are 3 engines and 12 firefighters still on the scene.
Opening time for Hwy 89 is still unclear. CHP estimates Saturday afternoon and Caltrans estimates the road will be closed until Monday. This is to allow crews to clean up the fallen trees and other debris on, and near, the roadway.

This summer,the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has been both combating aquatic invasive weeds while also testing out methods for future eradication of the pesky plants from their channels. They will be hosting a public meeting to update the community on their ongoing efforts on Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the South Tahoe Public Utility District board room.
NDOW releases Lake Tahoe bear back into the wild near Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/10/2016 - 6:40pmNevada wildlife biologists released a three-plus year old male black bear back into the forest near the top of Mt. Rose Summit on Monday morning after capturing him Sunday in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe.
Nevada Department of Wildlife trapped the young bear while attempting to trap another bear that had caused damage to a building, according to wildlife biologist Carl Lackey. The bear that was captured and then later released Monday wasn't the bear Lackey was looking for.
Lackey says that NDOW had handled the released bear once before in the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing the intersection improvements due to safety concerns for both cyclists and drivers. The purpose is to influence traffic calming with the implementation of a roundabout, something transportation officials say is needed because the intersection is experiencing a number of collisions related to the intersection type.
