For a 90-day trial period, the City of South Lake Tahoe will hire an outside security firm to assist with enforcement of the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance.

Many complaints have been voiced at City Council meetings about the lack of enforcement and the fact that part of the justification of the increase in fees for the vacation home permits was to go to staffing that department.

One man was transported to Barton Hospital Sunday morning after the motorcycle he was on collided with a Chevy Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe.

Personnel from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a call that came in at 10:19 a.m. on October 2 on Highway 50 between the Raley's shopping center and Mc Donalds.

5:15 p.m. update: Weather is helping fire fighters on the fire burning south of Gardnerville.

Recommended evacuations have been lifted and residents can return to their homes in the Ruhenstroth area. The area on the west side of Highway 395, including Stone’s Throw, Frontage Road and the Riverview Mobile Home Park remain closed to the residents.

Highway 395 north and southbound will be opening soon, single lane only with a pilot vehicle.

“The conditions are improving due the light rain, decrease in the winds and cooler temperatures,” said Deputy Chief Dave Fogerson.

Supervisors have approved a balanced budget for El Dorado County for the fiscal year 2016-17, one totaling $548.92 million.

Investments will be made in infrastructure and public safety, two focuses identified in the County's strategic plan as well as providing for funds to be set aside in reserves for emergencies and deferred maintenance for aging county buildings.

The following are examples of strategic plan investments made in the fiscal year 2016-17 budget:

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering two American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training courses. The courses are being taught by City employee, Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

A grinding and paving project on more than nine miles of U.S. Highway 50 in the Sierra started today, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced.

The pavement rehabilitation project, designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve ride quality, is from Strawberry over Echo Summit to just west of Johnson Pass Road. Grinding and paving will take place around the clock Monday through 7 p.m. Thursday of this week and again Monday through Thursday of next week under one-way traffic control. Motorists should plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As part of ongoing efforts to evaluate and use numerous tools to fight aquatic invasive plants in the Tahoe Keys, the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association recently announced its plans to apply for a permit for a small-scale demonstration of aquatic herbicides in 2018.

For the first time since 2008, El Dorado County’s Public Housing Authority will open its Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List. The Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program (formerly known as Section 8) is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and provides rental assistance to income qualified individuals and families. Applicants must be United States citizens or have eligible immigration status.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County TRIAD presented this year’s Senior Citizen’s Academy from September 12 through September 16, resulting in the graduation of 34 students who attended the week long program.

The goal of the Senior Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy is to provide crime fighting educational programs, fire safety and general information to senior citizens of Douglas County.

In honor of "National Thank a Police Officer Day," and in an effort to encourage others to show their support for our heroes in law enforcement, South Lake Tahoe resident Daniella Flatau presented the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and South Lake Tahoe Police Department with 60 goody bags on Monday.

The City of South Lake Tahoe organized a celebration to honor, not only the City's police officers, but all men and women who serve the South Shore. It was held at Lakeview Commons and El Dorado Beach on Thursday.

Members of the Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue, STAR volunteers, Probation Department, SLEDNET, USFS and the FBI all joined in the celebration with the public who came to give their thanks.

Not only was there a free BBQ for the honorees, there was also a free concert on the beach.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting Nevada children in grades K-5 to enter their drawing contest about stormwater pollution prevention. They want to engage and inform the younger generation on this important topic.

Winners will become published artists, with the first place student’s artwork featured on the cover of the 2017 NDOT Stormwater Program brochure, and the second and third place students’ artwork featured inside of the brochure. All student artwork meeting contest requirements will be shared on the NDOT @loveNVwaters social media pages.

Crews working on the SR28 Shared Use Path/Safety/Stormwater project in Incline Village will start a 24-hours-a-day schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and then from Monday, Sept. 26 to Friday, Oct. 7.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced the updated late-September/early-October construction schedule to meet their original Phase 1 completion date of October 20.

Motorists should anticipate delays of up to 30 minutes with one-lane flagger controlled closures near Hidden Beach, one mile south of Incline Village. (During Phase 1, the average wait time has been 5-15 minutes.)

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Travelers going through the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe should anticipate minor delays as construction crews enter the final phase of construction on a $6 million safety project. There will be work zone traffic pattern changes as both lanes of the roadway are repaved, spraying of concrete continues as well as other final tasks. The project is expected to be completed by October.

The trip from Lake Tahoe to Reno will be a shorter one once the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) completes the final leg of the I-580 Carson City Freeway. As of Thursday, construction is 50 percent completed.

Those making the trip down Highway 50 to Carson City have seen almost one million cubic yards of earth excavated to make way for the future roadway that will be completed in 2017.

The excavation was needed to lower the elevation of sections of the freeway to bring the road below existing overpasses and reduce traffic noise.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team is reminding the public that fire danger in the Lake Tahoe Basin remains high due to the ongoing drought and lack of precipitation. Illegal campfires and warming fires continue to be a concern for fire officials and are the major cause of wildfires in the basin. Fire restrictions are still in effect on National Forest land and will remain in effect until the official end of fire season.

Update 5:00 p.m. 9/7/16: The man killed in Monday's hiking incident near Cascade Falls has been identified as Airman 1st Class Tyler Oimoeon of Beale Air Force Base. He from Mt.Horeb, Wisconsin.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Airman Oimoen's family, coworkers and friends," Lt. Col. Matthew Mountcastle said. "During this difficult time, we are caring for his family and coworkers with the support of the Beale community."

A 21-year-old man died at Cascade Falls on Monday afternoon after taking a fall off granite rocks in the area.

A 63-year-old man diving in Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook Bay died on Monday, September 5.

Marine Patrols from Douglas County Sheriff, Washoe County Sheriff and El Dorado County Sheriff, along with Tahoe Douglas Fire all responded to the distress call of a scuba diver in trouble just after 10:00 a.m.
