Column: Nobody should be food insecure

Do you know what it is like to be hungry? I mean really hungry and not just a little growl in your stomach. I do and so do over 49 million Americans who are what we call “food insecure.” It is a feeling that can best be described as a fist inside of your stomach ever-so-slowly tightening until you are writhing in pain.

Healthy tips during National Nutrition Month

Dog flu spreading through California and Northern Nevada

Yes, dogs can get the flu.

With dozens of reported cases of dogs with influenza throughout Northern California over the last few weeks, it appears two strains of the nasty bug may be getting closer to Lake Tahoe.

One Reno veterinarian says even though they've had just 10 confirmed cases of dog flu in Washoe County, he believes there has likely been 100 cases. Some dog owners don't get their dogs tested for flu due to costs, but Dr. Rick Furman said many of the sick dogs seen in his office have they symptoms.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care membership drive and open house

It isn't cheap to care for hundreds of wild birds and animals each year so Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is holding their annual membership drive. Funds raised go to medicine, housing, equipment and food for the injured and orphaned wildlife.

Raley's to remove certain sodas from their shelves

Raley’s grocery stores announced today that they will eliminate certain Raley's brand sodas from their shelves in order to keep in line with their vision of health and wellness. One year ago, they stopped the sale of tobacco products for the same reason.

The move will take away all flavors containing high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors, including diet soda varieties.

Amgen riders consume 4,000 to 8,000 calories a day

At the 2016 Amgen Tour of California, the biggest and most prestigious pro cycling race in America, the young development team Axeon Hagens Berman is making a name for itself and its riders – and three of them share a look at what's for breakfast on the road.

The 144 pro cyclists (18 teams) in the 8-day race aim to consume the same amount of calories they burn on the bike, which at Amgen, depending on the length and toughness of the day, can be anywhere between 4,000 to a whopping 8,000 calories!

South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.

The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

Water conservation efforts working in California

In January, Governor Brown called for California residents to drop their water usage by 20% due to the drought. In July, urban water usage in the state was down by 7.5%. White this isn't the requested 20%, it still represents 17 billion gallons of water conserved.
