South Lake Tahoe senior graduation ceremonies moved to Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a graduation season marked by COVID-19 social distancing regulations, high school students across the globe knew the ceremonies marking the end of K-12 school careers would be different than in years past. With daily school work moved online, graduations were moved to a virtual format.

At both South Tahoe High and Mt. Tallac High schools, graduation has been made special by social media acknowledgments, yard signs, and special bags full of gifts.

Special meeting of LTUSD board; New superintendent announcement expected March 10

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a special closed session meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 9:00 a.m.

The only item on the agenda is to discuss "superintendent employment." Reportedly the district is still on track to announce the board's chosen candidate at their next regular meeting on March 10 and is using this meeting to finalize a contract.

New superintendent selected for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a new school superintendent headed to South Lake Tahoe, but who that is won't be revealed to the public quite yet.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) trustees announced they are in negotiations with the chosen individual but it may be two weeks until the name is released. That person will also have to notify their current employer.

"The community will be very happy with who we selected," Board President Larry Reilly announced during Tuesday's board meeting.

LTUSD Board of Trustees keep same leadership for 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual organizational meeting Friday, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education decided to keep the leadership they had over the past year again for 2020.

Citing a desire for experience as they go through the process of getting a new superintendent to replace the retiring Dr. James Tarwater, the board voted unanimously to have Larry Reilly continue as board president and Barbara Bannar as board clerk. Bannar has been on the board eleven years.

South Tahoe High School teacher arrested on sexual misconduct charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Tahoe High School (STHS) woodshop teacher has been arrested for misdemeanor sexual misconduct.

Nathan Crnich, 39, was arrested Thursday morning for alleged sexual advances on multiple students and is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on $150,000 bail.

Search on for new LTUSD superintendent - Public invited to open forum in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The search is on for a new superintendent for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to replace Dr. James Tarwater who informed the board in June he would be retiring at the end of the school year in 2020.

At their last meeting, the Board of Education hired Rich Thome and former LTUSD Superintendent Rich Fischer of Leadership Associates to conduct the search.

Students ready to start first full week back at Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary are starting their first full week back in their school Monday. All students in grades K-5 are getting settled in.

"It is so good to be back!" said Principal Karin Holmes. "The kids are doing great and the staff is so happy to be back in their classrooms. We are getting organized and enjoying being home. Our staff and students did not miss a beat in the transition back to Sierra House."

The school's annual Walkathon fundraiser is Friday, October 11.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District starts process of hiring new superintendent

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Board of Trustees from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) heard a presentation Tuesday about searching for the next superintendent.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater submitted his resignation on June 21 after serving the South Lake Tahoe community since 2005. He gave the Board a one year notice, making his last day in June 2020.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater announces retirement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Parents question safety at Sierra House Elementary after school reopens soon after fire

Sierra House Elementary fire caused by power cord overload

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018 was caused by an electrical overload due to “daisy chain wiring” of two power cords in a classroom.

When firefighters from Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) arrived at the school at 9:35 p.m. they found smoke once the front doors were opened and flames observed as they turned the corner near the "upper pod" wing.

Multiple agencies respond to fire at Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - An automatic fire alarm was triggered by a fire inside Sierra House Elementary school at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, November 11, bringing out a full response from fire fighters around the lake and law enforcement.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) was the first on the scene and saw smoke coming from the school which is located at Pioneer Trail and Remington Trail. Once inside they found fire in what is known as the upper pod at the school.

Karin Holmes named permanent principal at Sierra House

Karin Holmes can now take the "Interim Principal" off her name tag and add "Principal."

During last week's Lake Tahoe Unified School District(LTUSD) Board of Trustees meeting, the new position was made official.

"We're fortunate to have Karin Holmes," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater. "She is an outstanding educator."

In July 2017, Holmes was given the interim principal job at Sierra House Elementary after Ryan Galles left the district for a job in Vacaville.

Glowing reviews for South Tahoe High as accreditation team finishes visit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three member visiting accreditation committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) finished up their review at South Tahoe High School (STHS) today, parting with very positive comments about their experience.

"It is amazing what I've seen in two years," said Cheryl Townsend, Director of The Reach School in Sebastapol, Calif., and the only member of the accreditation team that originally reviewed the school in 2016. "There is a great level of intensity and quality at this school, give yourselves a hand."

LTUSD to adjust safety procedures in wake of recent school shootings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Since January 1, 2018 there have been 18 school shootings in the United States, 25 fatal school shootings since 1999's Columbine High School tragedy. With the deadly shooting February 14, 2018 at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, many communities are looking at their own schools and their safety procedures to help prevent a repeat of a tragic event.

What is commonplace at schools across the country are drills for "shelter in place" and for students to understand what to do, and not do, in case of an emergency.

Dr. Tarwater's contract extended three years; given 2% raise

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater was given a pay raise and three-year extension to his contact during Tuesday's school board meeting.

Dr. Tarwater, who joined the District on May 13, 2005, was given a satisfactory evaluation on his performance during closed session at the August 22, 2017 Board of Education meeting.

The Board unanimously approved a two-percent pay increase.

Planning Commissioner resigns after possible conflict identified

A letter sent to the South Lake Tahoe City Council and Lake Tahoe Unified School District has prompted Angela Swanson, a member of the City's Planning Commission, to resign from her position.

Swanson was appointed to the commission after submitting an application and being appointed during the January 17, 2017 City Council meeting. She was one of 11 people vying for the five open positions, each for a two-year term.

Mental Health Forum focuses on unmet needs of the community

The facts are startling. El Dorado County has twice the number of suicides than the state average. El Dorado County has 2.5 times the state average of maternity mental issues. The domestic violence rate in El Dorado County is 1.5 times higher than the state average. More people are living in the county with mental issues than ever before.

A day long forum of mental health care providers, agencies, medical professionals and other community members was held in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday in order to find what needs are being met, and unmet, in the area.

Olympian Jamie Anderson gives back to kids on the South Shore

Jamie Anderson continued her Give Back With Love sponsorship program on Tuesday, by giving three local students a dream package of equipment and a ski pass.

Anderson wanted to be present to give the students their prize but, according to Sierra-at-Tahoe, Jamie has been tied up with the X Games and Burton European Open. They wanted to get the kids up on the hill as soon as possible so didn't wait for Anderson's return but she'll join them on the slopes once back in South Lake Tahoe.

LTUSD schools closing for day. Winds causing South Lake Tahoe power black out.

Dr. James Tarwater has informed parents that schools in South Lake Tahoe are closing immediately due to a power black out for the area. He reported that the black out will last until 4:30 p.m.

All parents are requested to pick up their students and buses will start transporting children if they are normally transported by bus. Each school has a different Bus departure time starting with STMS at 12:45 p.m., STHS at 1:30 p.m., Bijou at 1:35 p.m., Sierra House and Tahoe Valley Elementary schools at 2:10 p.m., and the Magnet School at 2:25 p.m.

New home for 6th graders at South Tahoe Middle School

A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted on August 24, 2012 to commence the Grand Opening of the new 6th Grade wing at STMS. Dr. James Tarwater and the South Tahoe Unified School Board proudly unveiled the long awaited building in need.
Incoming 6th graders for the 2012 school year will be the first to utilize this state of the art facility.
